Swaby will really test the Gifted One
Swaby will really test the Gifted One
David Haye's mandatory English cruiserweight title defence against Lincoln southpaw, Lee Swaby, is THE acid test for the unbeaten former amateur star. No date for the fight as yet, but it will be happening early next year, given it doubles up as a British title eliminator.
Swaby has chinned Enzo Macarinelli and twice floored current British and cruiserweight champion Mark Hobson en route to a narrow 10-round points loss in Hobson's own hometown of Huddersfield. He's a dangerman.

Haye should beat him but its not a foregone conclusion.

Haye was stopped as an amateur by Jim Twite, a southpaw like Swaby. But that was a long time ago now.Southpaw Stylist wrote:Well I shouldn't think Swaby is gonna do it but who knows.

I see what you mean.Southpaw Stylist wrote:Well I shouldn't think Swaby is gonna do it but who knows.
I think a lot of so called Experts are overlooking the fact that David Hayes chin looked very very shaky aginst Mock, when you consider that most people are questioning Roman Greenbergs ability to take a shot based on unsubstantiated gym rumour and a flash knockdown in his last fight.
Greenberg seemed unaffected by the knockdown wheras Haye was in really bad trouble against Mock and was done a favour by the ref in the end.
A couple of fights back they were talking about Carl Thompson but Carl would knock his head off.
Haye knows it too.
A nice kid, but I cant see him making it.

While Haye v Swaby has been ordered by the board please dont think that it will definately happen !
Lee currently has a couple of very attractive offers on the table for other title fight's. Both of these for more than the Haye bout !
Best to wait and see !!!!"

Yes, I think I know who you are. Was I a boxer?![]()
I am a boxer.
Great fight, David Haye continues to impress me with his attitude to the game it makes a refreshing change. I predicted that Haye will meet a fighter as dangerous as Swaby by the end of 2004, not at the begining.
Well done all involved.
I think Haye should come through, it will certainly test his power, Enzo Maccrinelli is knocking people over for fun at the moment, but he couldn't budge Swaby. He was outboxing him, but never looked like stopping him. Then.... BANG (all over).
If Haye KO's Swaby then that will be impressive, and you have to say that for every second Swaby is in the fight he is dangerous. So its a tough one for him. Possibly more dangerous than Carl Thompson.

IMO, Haye will never get beyond European level, he has impressive physical gifts, including dazzling handspeed, good balance, and ferocious punching power.
However, he has NO DEFENCE AT ALL, doesn't judge his distance well enough, and has a shaky chin.
I don't care how much they go on about him sparring with heavyweights, Mock was a light heavyweight, and not even known as a puncher, and Haye's legs were like a new born foals when he first tried to get up.
Swaby may get crushed before he gets a chance to hit Haye, but against a seasoned professional in the top 20, Haye will need to learn some defence, at the moment he just punches himself into and out of trouble. He does appear to have pretty amazing power, but he's fighting guys who are there to be hit, and who don't hold a shot that well, and everyone looks like a devastating puncher under those circumstances.
What worries me most about Haye, is that when Mock had him in a world of trouble, instead of bringing that left hand up, he just stood and traded, one more big punch, and Haye would have been out cold, and he got away with it.
He'll try that against someone with more accuracy and a better defence, and he'll get absolutely mullered.

James - Haye was probably surprised as much as anything when knocked down by Mock, and I don't recall him being out cold, but getting back up and stopping Mock not long after.
Haye isn't going to be someone who has been hit often, and he'll toughen up some. Assuming you've been hit a few times, you can probably take a punch better now than the first time you got hit.
Haye DOES NOT have a poor chin. Such a comment is stupidly unfounded.
Furthermore I'd be downright shoced if the guy doesn't go beyond "European Level".
Come on...........

Cobblers. It wasn't 'surprise' I was sitting about 10 foot away from Haye when he went down, and believe you me, he was in big trouble. When he went down, he was grinning to himself and waving at his family and friends at ringside as if to say 'yeah I'm ok' when he tried to get up, his legs went all over the place, and he had to take a knee to recover. His legs were shaky for a hell of a long time after that, it wasn't a flash knockdown, he was badly hurt.
He didn't stop Mock soon after at all, it was two rounds later as i recall, and Mock had hurt Haye again badly just before Haye decked him with an uppercut. Mock got up at 6, his eyes were clear, his legs were steady, and he looked a hell of a lot better than Haye did when he went down, and the ref immediately stopped it to save the house fighter.
David Tua never got dropped by a cruiserweight as far as I recall, and McCall was never dropped by anyone. What is your point in mentioning these two names?
Mock was a light punching light heavyweight expected to give Haye little or not trouble, but he exposed his defensive frailities, and what I suspect is a suspect chin, of course I may be wrong.
I have nothing against Haye whatsoever, he's a nice guy, has time for the fans, and has a crowd-pleasing style. However, fighting as he does now will not take him far.

My point in mentioning Tua & McCall was obviously not to make a comparison between their chins and haye's but merely to emphasise the one thing Haye probably hasn't learnt in training is taking a punch.
Haye hardly LOOKS like someone who gets hit often does he???
Hense when he got decked by Mock he was probably so f**king shocked that someone had tagged him for once he was out of it for a short while. As he gets hit a bit more often he'll toughen up.
I just can't comprehend how someone getting hit on the temple and ging down, in only there what..8th fight or so...is indicative of them being "chinny".
Haye won't have any worries.

We'll see... but if I was putting money on it, I'd bet Haye's chin aint great.
It's not exactly unfounded rumours either - the Twite KO was a bad one, legs "gone" at the hands of a middleweight, then the way they went again with Mock - you can gloss over it till he loses, but it doesn't look too promising so far.
If he could really take a punch, well, he'd have it all wouldn't he?
Only the very rare perfect fighter has everything.
That said he can still go all the way if he picks up a tight defence - his punching and boxing ability will eventualy prove a handful for almost anyone. But it looks like he's gonna be vunerable while it lasts.
