25th Anniversary of the Pryor vs Arguello I fight

Post by elmersalsa »

Today is the 25th anniversary of this classic. What a fight. I cried a lot when Arguello lost. There was not a better person that deserved to win a fourth world title than the great Alexis Arguello, but he lost.

Aaron Pryor looked terrific...It was one of those thrilling bouts that made you jump out of your seat.

I will never forget that unforgettable night of that Friday night of November 12th, 1982, exactly 25 years ago. :TU: :TU: :TU:

I wasn't born at the time of this fight but I actually haven't ever gotten around to seeing it.

This was the bout involving a mysterious bottle of unknown contents wasn't it? What was the story again?

"Gimme the bottle. No, the black one, the one I mixed."

-- Panama Lewis, during the break in one of the latter rounds, clearly picked up on the corner mike.

Classy guy.

Interesting. Was anything proven or was that the extent of the suspicion?

Watch the original broadcast tape of the fight. PM Red Dragon, he'll sort you out.

I always thought it was a myth until I got hold of it, & I'm sitting there watching it and lo & behold, Panama Lewis opens his enormous trap & inserts his foot.

It really shocked me. I was skinning up at the time & my gear went all over the couch 'cos I dived across the room to grab the remote & rewind it.

Actually unbelievable. But it's there.

Didn't Lewis claim it was some tap water or something, to "settle Aaron's stomach"?

Highly likely...

"No pudenda on me, drugstable..."

Conspiracy buffs think Aaron was given a phial of the Hulk's come mixed with Thor's blood.

This is what made Arguello lose, nothing to do with the shit that he had beaten out of him and his breaking his heart when hitting Aaron with monster rights but to no avail.
Oh, very true; I was just so surprised 'cos I assumed it was a total piece of bollocks. Like I said, I couldn't quite believe my ears.

Not saying you are one of the crazies DS but I've seen posts on here claiming that Clay-Cooper 'The Directors Cut' shows us Ali having a lie-down, massage and light lunch during the break between rounds whilst Dundee stacks the gloves with rapiers.
Hey no problem man.

That wasn't a certain "Granberry" of this parish, was it?

I saw the fight twice this week and what a fight it was. Arguello stopped punching because he suffered a clash of heads in the 14th round. Watch the 14 round folks. They bumped heads and Pryor got the better of it. Arguello was dazed and Pryor went for the kill.

How about if we match the great Aaron Pryor with these fighters at their very best between 135 and 147lbs:

What the end would be?

1. vs Sugar Ray Leonard at 147lbs
2. vs Thomas Hearns at 147lbs
3. vs Roberto Duran at 135, 140 or 147lbs
4. vs Julio Cesar Chavez at 135 or 140lbs
5. vs Pernell Whitaker at 135 or 140lbs
6. vs Carmen Basilio at 147lbs
7. vs Pipino Cuevas at 147lbs
8. vs Wilfred Benitez at 140lbs
9. vs Carlos Ortiz at 135lbs
10. vs Ismael Laguna at 135lbs
11. vs Ken Buchanan at 135lbs
12. vs Nicolino Locche at 140lbs
