THERE WAS TALK OF JONES FIGHTING BENN IN 1989 WHEN NBC-TV WERE GOING TO SIGN THEM BOTH AND BUILD THEM TOWARDS A SUPERFIGHT TO TAKE OVER FROM HAGLER AND LEONARD. TRUE.
HIS FIRST TWO FIGHTS WERE ON NBC THEN HIS DAD TOOK HIM OFF TV FOR THREE YRS UNTIL HE LEFT HIM. Yes he was. Just yesterday, i wayched RJJ vs clinton woods and ruiz. i came up with the conclusion that RJJ is probably the best boxer i have ever seen in my life. The reason i watched these fights was because For a while now i was getting caught up in all the internet talk about RJJ was never that good and RJJ would never have lived with so and so from the old days. when i first so RJJ probably around '95, i knew then that i saw a talent that i had never previously seen before. woods may not be the best example to use but he treated woods ( who has now been champ for two years) with the same contempt that mayweather showed gatti.Crew2 wrote:HIS FIRST TWO FIGHTS WERE ON NBC THEN HIS DAD TOOK HIM OFF TV FOR THREE YRS UNTIL HE LEFT HIM. the ruiz fight he thought a man that came in at over sixteen stone, he didnt run he actually stood there and took the centre of the ring in many of the rounds.
The argument with roy all the time is that he was never in a great fight. But there is a reason for this. He was just too good. When ever people talk about great fighters of the last fifteen- twenty years, there are always two fighters who get more criticism than anyone else, that's RJJ and mayweather. People need to look into why this is. It is almost as if they are unwilling to believe that they are and were just that good.
excuse me for going off on one. it may not be the right thread but i just had to write it.

Jeez ,,, if he is the best, you need to get out more. Or watch some videos. Skill level, he couldn't kiss Leonard's ass. And Leonard did no ducking and hand picking of opponents. Jones was good, but druggy, and the moment he came off the gear and his reactions slowed, he was shot.
Calzaghe would batter him. Yanks are obsessed by this pound fo pound stuff, and it is crap. It is no more relevant than saying Calzaghe would have beaten Ray Robinson. Who knows? Is Mayweather better than Pacquiao, or Joe? At the end of the day, apart from on sites like this and over a couple of pints, who cares? Is Ricky suddenly pound for pound no 1 if he beats Mayweather? Or will we see that PBF is not all that he is cracked up to be?
Jones was way too green to win a title on his debut. He was a jnr middle and the division was hot.Crew2 wrote:HIS FIRST TWO FIGHTS WERE ON NBC THEN HIS DAD TOOK HIM OFF TV FOR THREE YRS UNTIL HE LEFT HIM. He was still too green to beat Norris in 1990.
In the gym dont mean much.Crew2 wrote:HE WAS GETTING THE BETTER OF RON ESSETT AND LINDELL HOLMES IN FLORIDA GYMS IN 88-89 (THERE IS FOOTAGE)( SO HE WAS MORE THAN READY ABILITY-WISE
Tony Ayala at 14 got the better of Cuevas in the gym.
Ron Essett and Lindell Holmes were not the standard of Terry Norris, Mike McCallum John Mugabi or Matthew Hilton in 1988.

How did that happen? He's always had a lawyer/advisor, as far as I know. He's earned a fortune. Don't these guys pay their tax each year like other self-employed people? If you earn 10 mill. in a year, you put about 4 mill. away for the taxman and have 6 left to play with. It can't be that difficult to manage. I know he owned about 800 fighting cocks at one time, but I wouldn't have thought the chicken feed cost that much.KO Artist wrote:You wouldnt.
