Come on Silkov mate you're sounding like a bit of a troll now. I'm no RJJ lover but its pretty obvious to anyone following boxing in 95 that Jones was after Benn and Eubank.

Eubank got himself beat whereas Benn looked unlikely because of the DK connection, but got himself beat by Malinga anyway.

Silkov, Eubank was never interested in fighting anyone. His list of title defences speaks volumes. Benn on the other hand was very willing, but the process was much slower because he was associated with Don KIng and Showtime, and RJJ with HBO and anti-DK. But if Benn could of maintained a winning run thru 96 it would of come together surely, but he couldn't even beat Malinga who RJJ had iced years ago.

Jones wa shappy, more than happy to pocket $5mil per title defense vs Bryant Brannon, Richard Frazier, ANYONE. He missed a lot of big fights now he can't go away...

Jones called them both out soon after Eubank vs Collins 1 in an article in Boxing Monthly - called Eubank, nostrills.

Benn has openly admitted in a BM interview (think it was around 1999/2000) that the ONLY thing that interested him fighting Jones was the money. He has admited (and fair play to him) that after McClellan he had no chance of beating him - but he would have fought anyone for the money he was demanding. He said that part of the reason why he was asking so much was cause he knew the fight wasn't going to happen at that price - if the execs would have surprised him and said yes, then fair enough he would have fought him.

Its a little bit similar to the Steve Collins vs RJJ situation, just Collins has never publically said that he stood no chance.

I think Collins really believed he could win.

It's pretty meaningless, but there's a slight parallel between Tyson-Holmes and Jones-McCallum. Now admittedly, McCallum was in better shape than Holmes during his later years, but Jones couldn't put him away. Marciano-Louis is another example. When an old master can survive against a bright young challenger, legend isn't a word I reach for.

But was McCallum coming out of a 2 year retirement to fight RJJ? No, he had been active. AN older but active Holmes did a good job going 12 and making Holyfield look bad, Holyfield being superior to Tyson in every department except 1 punch power.

I was alluding to McCallum's activity when I said he was in better shape than Holmes at the same age. Larry maintains he didn't train for Tyson of course.

But wasn't Jones regarded as a puncher? Despite clearly dominating a shopworn Mike, he was unable to finish the job. So he never announced his superiority in the fashion Rocky M and others did. I'd compare Jones to Hamed myself.

Eubank had a very buisness-like approach to boxing. In his autobiography, pertaining to Roy Jones, he stated that he would have accomadated a challenge from RJJ - if he had been the No1 challenger to his belt; but openly conceeded that it was a fight that he stood little chance of winning.

Jones was a bit more enigmatic than that though, wasnt he. Theres a whole string of guys who went long with RJJ, seemingly at RJJs pleasure. He very rarely stepped it up or over exerted himself, McCallum was among those guys who got their heads jabbed off, knocked down, but Jones never went for it. Im a big McCallum fan and not a RJJ fan, but i dont mind admitting that it looked like Jones could take him out anytime he wanted.

Jones at 168 looked as close to unbeatable as we've ever seen in a boxing ring, against Harris, Malinga, Toney, Byrd, Pazienza, Thornton and Brannon he was almost hideous, barely took one flush power shot in all those fights together and his hand-work seemed super-enhanced, even throwing flurries of power shots. But at 175, he had a closish call with McCallum, got a little schooled by Griffin, KTFD by Del Valle, a close call with Harding, a close call with Tarver, and then KTFO by Tarver.

He just wasn't the same fighter at 175 and personally I rated Mosley and Mayweather over him in mythical lb4lb, and Hamed after the Badillo and Bungu fights, and Oscar and Trinidad I suppose too. He was probably not a mythical lb4lb top five fighter at 175, IMO.

STP, in all due respect, your post is full of enormous holes to suit your argument. Yes you are right jones was the nearest thing to unbeatable at super middle, and had fun while he was at it. But if you look at his record at l.heavy it's a record anyone would be proud of.

he was two time l.heavy weight champion, undisputed l.heavy champion, he had 15 fights at the weight before moving up to heavy. losing one on a DQ, that was admittedly his hardest fight to date, but was certainly on his way to winning in that round or the next. How you could say he was schooled just because it was a difficult fight is beyond me. The mccallum fight was far from close. He broke Hills ribs in 4 one sided rounds, hit the deck for the 1st time in his career versus Del valle and still won by 10 rounds on one judge and 9 rounds on the other 2 judges score cards.
He made twelve defences of his undisputed crown at the weight.

Lets face it jones was never the same fighter once he dropped back down from heavy, you could clearly see that in his body and stamina, he just wasn't the same.

Don't want to sound rude, but didn't everyone know that Jacko was broke.

I do find it a tad hard that Mariah Carey is/was in trouble fincially - wasn't she married to the head man at Sony or something like that and had a divorce! I wouldn't mind finding out about the shape of her breasts mind and report to you guys if they are facing in the opposite directions. Wasn't it only like a 2 year period when her career took a dip.... Nothing like a quick suicide attempt to reboost your flagging career.

Anyway, on to the boxing - I'm starting to get more hyped for this fight. Jones aint been impressing, but he has ticked along OKAY since the third Tarver fight against not too bad names. If one of these wins CONCLUSIVELY then I think they are back in the mix in a devision devoid of names. I would expect to see a well hyped title fight next for the winner that could draw big numbers. I think it is such indirectly for Calzaghe - what I mean, is say Tito smashes Jones in 2 rounds (or vice versa) the winner will get hyped. The winner fights and loses convincingly to say Dawson - Dawson is now a money player in the devision.

Jones was the money man. All fighters fight for the money. If Jones really wanted those fights to happen they'd have happened because nobody could have turned the money down.

I'm not as harsh as Silkov on the Jones issue but I have some sympathy with his position.

Jones wanted to convince everyone of his greatness by show boating agianst fighters who were no threat. Can you imagine him operating in the division when the likes of Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Harold Johnson and Lloyd Marshall were fighting?

You must be mad. I grant you that these fighters were great fighters in their days, but i've seen these guys perform against great and mediocre opponents of their times and ive seen jones perform against great and mediocre opposition of his time, and i can tell you IMO, jones would do them all, his speed and power would allow him to land shots almost at will on them. Go back and look at videos of these guys, youtube even. AQs good as these guys were in their day, jones is better all round. Honestly, people would have you believe that the fighters from the earlier era were beyond getting beat by fighters of today.
