Jordan, my dad, and I leave for Minnesota tomorrow. The World Golden Gloves is Friday and Saturday. This is the first one to be held and will feature the U.S., England, Puerto Rico and Ireland.

Mel - I had a nice long talk with Aaron Alafa at breakfast. He is a good person to have as an athlete rep. He's intelligent, well-spoken, outspoken and a nice guy. You should be proud to have him represent California too. I saw Ronny Rios also, but haven't had a chance to talk to him much.

I will post the results later tonight.

The Grand Casino is a nice place to hold a tournament like this. It is over an hour away from Minneapolis/St. Paul so there isn't much for the boxers to do to get in trouble which is a good thing. As we all know sometimes boxers wander around in big cities. Here they have to stay put for the most part. It is a huge casino though with multiple restaurants. The ballroom where the bouts will be held is huge. It is almost the size of an indoor football field.

The semi-finals at the 1st World Golden Gloves Tournament concluded last night. The U.S. team won 9 out of 10 bouts and had 1 bye. Keola McKee at 106# lost a close bout to a boxer from Great Britian and Nate James at 201+# had a bye.

Mel - Kenny Porter is here with Shawn. He and I worked together as usual. He seconds for me with Jordan and I second for him with Shawn. Yes, Sammy DiPace is Siju's coach, but he did not come to the tourney. Siju said that Sammy is busy getting his son, Sammy DiPace III, ready for his pro debut which is coming up next month. Keola along with Nate James is being coached by David Reid. There are plenty of coaches to go around for the US team. I worked Aaron Alafa's corner and Kenny Porter was the second coach. Kenny worked with Siju and had Johnny Johnson help him in the corner. Brad Solomon's coach is here. I don't remember who worked with Ronny - I think it was Johnny along with another coach who is from Duluth, MN. There are a few other coaches helping out too.

I thought Siju won his bout and was very surprised at the decision. My son Jordan won by a knockout.

Nate James lost when his opponent got tangled up with him and they both fell. The problem was the guy fell on top of Nate and Nate hit his head hard on the canvas. The ref ruled it a slip, but then Nate wasn't able to get up right away. The ref then started a count and Nate got up, but he was a little wobbly and the ref stopped it. It was one of those freak things that can happen in this sport.

It was a very good tournament and the USA boxers showed a lot of skill and heart.

THERE'S A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING ALTHOUGH WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WAS A FREAKY THING, IN MY BOXING CAREER IVE NEVER BEEN STOPPED, OFF MY FEET, NOR KNOCKED OUT. LASTNIGHT WAS THE FIRST THAT IVE EVER EXSPERIENCED THAT SITUATION..I BEATEN HIM DOWN AND HAD HIM ON HIS WAY OUT I THREW THAT NATE JAMES LEFT HAND, HE BOUNCED OFF THE ROPE AND WRAPPED AROUND ME AND WE WENT DOWN HARD. AT FIRST THE REF WAS COUNTING HIM THEN HE HAD SEEN ME LAYING THERE AND COUNTING ME AS I WAS GETTING UP, BOTTOM LINE THE GUY GOT A GIFT EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT, SO NOW OFF TO VS ROMANIA I FEEL BAD FOR THE GUY I SEE NEXT IM GETTING IN THAT GYM AND GOING TO CONTINUE TO WORK EVEN HARDER AND STEP MY GAME UP. CONGRATS TO ALL USA AT THIS TOURNAMENT

How were the teams decided for this tournament ? I know we had some guys from London here in Chicago. Had Most of the weight Classes fighting.

I believe the national coaches for those countries decided who to bring. They brought a lot of #2 boxers and a few #1's. Our team was the Nat'l GG champ or if the GG champ was unavailable then a strong replacement was found.
