Poor journalism from SecondsOut.com

Post by bennie »

From SecondsOut.com:

"Former linear heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs will likely face former IBF kingpin Frans Botha under K-1 kickboxing rules at the Tokyo Dome, Japan on New Year’s Eve.
The fight is not yet official, but both Miami-based Briggs and South African Botha are confirmed for the big card and, according to reports from Japan, the promoters are keen on pitting the two big name pugilists against each other.
Botha has already fought under the K-1 banner, losing twice to Cyril Abidi. First, the South African was disqualified for sparking out the Frenchman with an illegal blow in October before dropping a close three-round decision to the kick-boxer in the recent rematch.
Meanwhile, Briggs – said to weigh as much as 270lbs of rock solid muscle in preparation for his K-1 debut - has been training hard in Miami with leading kickboxing talents.
But you have to wonder if the two world-class heavies will dispense with the kicks and knees and just box over the three five minute rounds."

SecondsOut doesn't mention the obvious fact that these two met as boxers in a 10-rounder in 1999 and battled to a controversial draw in Atlantic City (most people feeling Botha won, even though he was floored in the eighth). It's easy to be critical I know, but sometimes the criticism is deserved.
