Fight of the year contenders
Mate, with the greatest of respect, what fight were you watching? At times I was begging for Thompson's corner to throw the towel in as he had zero defence and was getting systematically worked over by Vuma.Captain Hook wrote:I definitely would not call Thompson v Vuma a one-sided beating or schooling....
He gave a great account of himself.....
Just because he was constantly loading up and throwing desperate shots that consistently missed the mark bar the body shot that secured the knockdown, doesn't mean he wasn't taking a beating in there.
Surely no-one can argue that he wasn't taken to school by a far more experienced pro
You can see my previous post regarding the Thompson fight - the reality is that he rarely landed any of his wild, winging shots, and bar the one body shot never genuinely troubled Vuma at any point.Autobarn wrote:come on, both these fights had 2-way drama and thrilling exchanges. for intensity and sustained action, these were brill fightsDeserter wrote:At the risk of sounding like a dissenting voice just for the sake of it, I've got the same problem with this one that I had with Earl & Kat - namely that for 95% of the fight it was Vuma in control and gradually schooling Thompson. Despite the knockdown that Thompson pulled off out of the blue it didn't look to me that he was ever really going to turn the fight around.Autobarn wrote:agreed very much so
Bika v Codgeringtone was more one sided! Despite wild action and both gettig hurt, I gave Bika most of the rds...(even though this isn't EVEN a British fight in the slightest)...
As for Earl and Katsidis, that one particular round would probably get round of the year for me as it was remarkable, but it was then followed by three rounds of Earl getting 'tattooed' against the ropes by the stronger man with no suggestion he could turn it around... consequently not a fight of the year candidate for me as once Katsidis came through his rocky patch there was clearly only going to be one winner.
we shouldn't forget that Thompson stepped in quite late to fight Vuma as a replacement for Jamie Moore who's the established British champion. So no shame in the performance at all......and the gulf in experience is probably the reason Thompson has deservedly got the credit he has for making a fight of it.Deserter wrote:Mate, with the greatest of respect, what fight were you watching? But for me he was getting punished on too many occasions with head shots which were unnecessary for a relatively novice pro in a non title affair. (no doubt someone will now come on and tell me they were boxing for the vacant ABC intercontinental interim title or whatever).

I was at ringside and in fairness I think Mark did a terrific job considering he was in against such a solid fighter at such late notice. Sure he was thrown in at the deep end but from where I was sitting it was a lot closer than you make out.
He does take far too many shots - he did again, in his last fight against Horta - and needs to tighten his defence. He won a few rounds against Vuma and knocked him down so let's give him his props, he's been on a steep learning curve of late.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that he did a terrific job given the context and I can't help but admire his strength and heart, but I don't recall giving him a single round bar when he scored the knockdown apart from maybe the first when Vuma seemed content to sit back and take a look at what he was up against. I honestly thought he should have been pulled out before the finish as he was displaying similar traits to Macklin against Moore i.e. he was clearly completely gassed and fighting off heart alone, and that's when you can get badly damaged.Captain Hook wrote:I was at ringside and in fairness I think Mark did a terrific job considering he was in against such a solid fighter at such late notice. Deserter - so you gave him two rounds then?
I'll get ya in the end mate, you're coming around, I can tell
Anyway, we'll agree to disagree but like you said initially, it was a great fight.....real ding-dong.
My favourite domestic fight ever has to be David Starie v Calzaghe, real passion and grit shown by both..

well if that's the case (i don't think I saw this one) why does Calzaghe get panned for his record and I've seen people on this forum specifically mention Starie........
that surprises me cos I once saw Starie box on BBC and I can't remember who or what it was for but he gave a masterclass of boxing and I've watched a lot of boxing and I was well impressed and wanted to see how far he'd go, but obviously that must have been toward the end of his career as never really saw him after that which surprised me.
