Mismatch for December '07

Post by Beltane »

On the Mundine card, we have this 4 rounder support, which is a good a mismatch as any in recent times:

Mohamed Elomar - 15 fights - 14 wins (5 by ko) - 1 loss

versus

Arnel Balicuatro - 5 fights - 5 losses

Another lamb to the slaughter.

It kind of fits the whole theme of the evening nicely.

As a side note, Elomar's first fight with Matt Powell was one of the funniest "fights" i have ever seen. It was like the godamn WWE. Australian boxing is in a really sad place right now.

Looks like the rest of the card so far isnt real flash either. Bill Kalache up against thai who got koed in first round. I know he is only a novice but looks like Bill can punch a bit. I didnt get last Mundine fight on because of bad matched undercard fights and wont get this one on either

when the 'matchmaker' sits down to match fighters, does he take into account the need to at least have some sort of credibility. Or does he rely simply on the Mundine factor.
ie the mundine factor is like JAG somebody must have watched it but no one admits to it

There's no such thing as 'Matchmaker' on Mundine shows.
Boxer 'A' selects & pays his opponent out of proceeds of ticket sales.

Anton, what sort of vetting do the governing body(s) in NSW do?

Occasionally in the UK, the BBBC will reject a proposed bout as not being in the interest of the sport.

Does that happen in NSW?

It has happened. Mundine had to move a fight to QLD because the NSW commission wouldn't allow it. So yes, it does happen but not nearly enough.

I guess they point to the lack of (quality) opponents in the Pacific area?

I think, after that episode, NSW Boxing Authority were advised by State legal eagles there's no provision in legislation & its rules & regulations preventing a match going ahead, albeit seen as an obvious mismatch.

Legislation clearly states it's the Promoter's responsibility to ensure it doesn't happen....In fact everything & anything is Promoter's responsibility.

In the event of an incident or death, Authority will simply hang (so to speak) the promoter & walk away from it - Free of any possible legal action.

It becomes police & DPP matter if the law had been broken

I think you would have to be rich or crazy to pay for a Mundine fight until he actually starts to fight credible opponents and cleans up his undercards. An average ESPN Friday Night Fights has a way more entertaining roster of fighters then Mundines undercards.

This is Elomar's first fight since his being detained by some of George W Bush's dodgy allies in Lebanon in July on unsubstantiated charges. He has not fought since May and there were some reports of him being tortured while in custody. Perhaps we should cut him some slack.

Yeah, my mistake. The uncle locked up at the same time was named Mohamed. But it is Mohamed's first fight since May.
