Its an interesting one alright - I have to say my first reaction to the suggestion that Khan would fight Earl rather than going in with Jon Thaxton for the British belt was "is he mad?". I've had time for several other reactions since, and they've all brought me to the same conclusion - that either the Khan camp know something the rest of us don't, or they genuinely believe his hype to the letter.

How good is Earl? I'd say he was a sliver short of world class - he certainly beats Thaxton into a cocked hat every day of the week, and crucially I think the early retirement against Katsidis saved him from being hammered, and has given him something to rail against. Khan may still beat him - I'd personally say the Bolton lad wins this one six or seven of ten times - but its a very live fight indeed.

I'm not as convinced as you that Earl beats Thaxton, I'd certainly be backing JT. The fight got mandated recently for the British belt, but Earl pulled out of it (probably because he knew Khan was on the cards though)

I don't think Khan is good enough to keep Earl away. He'll try to out box Earl. Snapping the jab out and keep moving but I think Earl will slowly pull Khan into a slug out.

Once Earl starts to catch Khan with a couple of good shots in the early rounds. Khan will lose his patients after being hurt and he will start to go toe to toe with Earl. It will be a slug out come the 5th. Earl will KO Khan around the 6th round.

Earl just needs to stay patient. Look for the shot and take it. It's apparent Earl only needs one shot to KO Khan. Khan will beat Earl to the jab. Hopefully Earl can land some half decent shots and drag Khan into a slug out. If that happens Khan can't win.

Maybe Earl can end it sooner. It depends if Khan can keep his hands up like he did in his last fight. Earl could go to the body and it would only take a round or two to get Khan to pull his hands down, because he has a very bad habit of keeping his hands low anyway.

Earl has many options to win this fight. It'll be interesting to see which tactic or tactics he uses.

Khan on the other hand needs to keep to boxing. He needs to jab and move. Throw the odd combination in and see if he can get an opening. Khan just needs to pray that Earl doesn't land a big shot on him.

I fancy an Earl win. I'll be having a bet at betfair on him.

I think this is a fairly straightforward win for Khan. He's learnt from the Limond experience while I suspect the Kadsidis fight was Earl's last hurrah on a major stage.
Khan's hand speed will cause Earl all manner of problems and if Khan, as I suspect he will, sticks to his boxing, he can dominate the fight with his jab. Earl's footwork has always been fairly pedestrian and I can't see him being quick enough to cut the ring off. Instead I see him traipsing around the ring getting picked off by Khan at long range and getting tied up and frustrated when he manages to get inside.
Khan is similar to a degree to Ricky Burns in terms of height and style, and we all know how he managed to frustrate Earl.
Khan's a long way short of the finished article and I still have doubts about his ability to make it at the top level, but we all know that styles make fights and I just think Earl is tailor-made to make Khan look good.
The only caveat I'd add is that if Khan's pride leads him to abandon his boxing and engage in a tear-up with Earl he could well end up getting chinned... unlikely, but possible.
Khan in 6 for me, with the referee stepping in to save Earl, who will still be on his feet, but shipping increasing amounts of leather against the ropes while failing to fire back... a Calzaghe-style stoppage with Khan, with the sheer volume of shots forcing the ref to make his intervention, rather than Earl being dropped by one big shot.

exxodus sees it much as i do, except in my scrap khan busts earl up and later in the fight.

Quite - the money for Khan will blow what he'd make for Thaxton outta the water. I've thought it through again and, sorry, I still would take Earl in that fight - but then, you know what they say about opinions...

Anyone else have the horrible feeling that Khan might have one of his 'aim 10 shots in a hurry' specials while the unharmed Earl has his back on the ropes, prompting the ref to jump in and end it unncessarily early?

Prior to that of course the fight has been fairly even with both fighters having their moments.

I see Khan dropping Earl atleast once before the ref steps in to stop the fight.The speed of khan punches bowls him over.

I think JT-Earl is pretty much a 50-50 fight, I was just referring to you r below comment

Yeah, I suppose that is a bit harsh on Thaxton. I wouldn't go as far as to suggest it was 50/50 though - he was impressive taking the title from Lee Meager, but in his two defences he looked fairly average against Scott Lawton and less than impressive against Dave Stewart, and Earl is several rungs ahead of either of those.

That's very possible. And there'd be no re-match, despite Earl's protestations. I do, however, see Earl getting to Khan and stopping him before the above scenario unfolds.
