Buncy's better than most, doesn't matter that he hasn't fought as a pro, Arsene Wenger knows more about football than most ex footballers. ps Buncy knows FA about football.

Like it or not, wrestling is a huge business followed by millions, and so there is legit work in writing about it.

And besides, so what if he writes about wrestling as well? Can't a journalist have more than one area of expertise?
I may be wrong but I think more tickets are sold to wrestling fans than boxing fans - The arenas always seem packed and they put on shows every week.
The Spice Girls in their pomp probably sold more tickets than the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Or Take That broke records set by the Beatles ffs!

You see my point? The arenas are full of children and adults who either 1 - Accompanied them or 2 - Have *stunted* interests.

But would a journalist who wrote about the Spice Girls be less qualified to write about The Beatles?

Why is Evans' boxing writing compromised by him also being a wrestling writer?

Ok I wasn't really in the deeper conversation - Ant is a good writer don't really want to knock him.

But...

Covering wrestling - If you are writing about it purely professionally to pay the bills then fair play, I'd do the same but - if you actually like wrestling then it would in some way diminish my opinion of your opinion when it comes to boxing.

It's all hype and bullshite, you are possibly looking for something in combat sport that most traditional boxing fans aren't.

The same way as somebody telling me they liked Take That, I just wouldn't really want to read what they had to say about the Beatles - it would render it almost irrelevant.

Very interesting this, Goz.

You make a good point about paying the bills. Wrestling mags pay a LOT more than boxing mags.

I like WWE Raw - because it's hype and bullshit. It's just funny. There's no way I take it seriously. I like the bullshit element more than the actual wrestling.

For example, at the next 'Survivor Series' (I think) I see there's a match between Hornswoggle and The Great Khali.

Hornswaggle is a dwarf who dresses up as a leprechaun (and is the supposed bastard son of WWE owner Vince McMahon).

The Great Khali is a 7ft plus Arab giant.

WTF!?

Why? They're completely different sports (or "sports"). The only thing they have in common is a ring.

If somebody liked soap operas, would it diminish your opinion of their opinion about film?

A little I think, yes.

Somebody who watches the dirge of Corry, Eastenders and Emmerdale then telling me they don't think much of the Coen Brothers work - I'm not really going to respect their opinion that much to be honest...

Just an aside, but Wenger actually played professional football to a decent level - take a look at the latest issue of 4-4-2.

Quite franklly if he was attracted so much to wrestling that he embarked on a career writing about it, he has got no business covering a proper sport like boxing.

Wrestling? Jesus. Was he bullied at school

I like bunce.

Comments like "my girlfriend thinks he's disgusting" are hurtful. They aren't paying him to look pretty, and who cares what your missus or anyone else's think anyway. They wouldn't be watching boxing full stop if it was up to them.

He's no Teddy Atlas but he's got character and enthusiasm which is what this sport needs a bit more of in the commentary department, everyone else is always so dry.

What a harsh lot you are.

Can't remember the division but he was definitely a pro, so not the best example to use.

My point is, the human brain is complex enough to allow an individual to enjoy or work in more than one area. Can somebody who enjoys the odd burger still be a restaurant critic? Can somebody who reads the Daily Sport still work for The Times? And so on... the answer is of course they can. We all "dumb down" at times, whether its getting a takeaway on a Friday night, watching a brainless action movie, and so on.

And while I say dumb down, I'm doing a disservice to, for example, wrestling, soap operas, The Sun and brainless action movies. They all serve a purpose, know their market and are very successful. The people involved in these industries need to be just as professional as he more "respected" ones. So a wrestling journalist is every bit as qualified as a boxing journalist. Just because he writes about something you don't personally care for doesn't make it any different.

I'd say the burger analogy is a good one but it's a bit different - but that's because I like burgers and nice restaurants!

Nearer to the point is that I seriously doubt anyone who writes for The Times reads The Sport!

I do take your point though, we are all capable of dumbing down to a degree, for fecks sake I'm no Einstein.

But with wrestling it's just so... horrible. It's one thing enjoying a packet of chips after some foie gras but (to me anyway) another sitting in the crowd of a WWF 'contest' waving your oversized hand-on-a-stick thing cheering on men in leotards who are roaring like morons pretending to fight in some 'storyline' that let's face it wouldn't do justice to an average 11 year olds story book.

It's got no class, no style, no skill (yeah I know they train and practice yada yada yada) and I still think it should have no interest for anyone over the age of 12/13 - other than those making money out of it anyway...

Nothing makes me cringe like Wrestling....

I'm sure Ant Evans is more a paying the bills kind of guy than actually enjoying wrestling....

Being a pro doesn't mean that much in boxing, a good amateur is better than a bad pro, so you wouldn't need to have been a pro to be a good pundit. Buncy's good stuff.

Yeah it had to be hard for him.
Well done Chesh and Stick n Move - You cracked me up earlier Stick n Move with one of your wicked replies - Thats the thing, we can be serious or have laugh sometimes but why people spoil things getting personal I just dont understand - Hey Chesh my wife is upset because there is no boxing on Friday night - Hope for you yet mate, your wife might just become a fan - My wife became a fan of Rickys, really because of that lad who Ricky looks after - Gradually she has got more and more interested, and instead of her sitting in another room watching a film or something when the boxing is on we are now watching the fights together - Christ I nearly die laughing when I hear her say "come on use your jab more" then she says "what are you laughing about, he needs to score more points". - Then she says "I hope Ricky knocks that Merryweather man out" - Women are great arent they!!!
Waylon, you're lucky your wife's now interested in boxing. My wife likes Hatton in interviews. It's the fighting part she doesn't like! I'll try to make her watch Hatton-Mayweather, though, by turning up the TV to full volume at 3 in the morning and, even though it's not my style, I just might start shouting "There's only one Ricky Hatton!" at the top of my voice. Women, eh, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

Getting back to Bunce, this letter in this week's BN:
I stayed up to watch Calzaghe-Kessler. Instead I saw the all-seeing, all-knowing Steve Bunce show. It was like watching a boxing seminar chaired by Mr Bunce.
Clinton Woods, a current world champio, seated next to Mr Bunce, hardly got a word in.
As the evening wore on, I became more and mor efascinated by Bunce, what with his head movement and handspeed, all from a sitting position, ahile he shouted his opinions at us. If he boxed today, he would never get hit.
I didn't stay awake to see the fight live. After what seemed like days of being shouted at by Bunce, I took refuge in a shallow restless sleep, and had what can only be described as a nightmare

Yep Benny Hill got a number 1 but genuine singers often dont make the charts - Its crazy, and I see what you mean but the pop world is daft anyway - I had an involvement with it years ago and nothing seems to have changed in 35/40 years - WWE is total nonsense with its silly stories and why adults turn out in huge numbers to watch it beats me - Not all are there with their 10 year old kid - Maybe the answer is "only in America" - I admit after a few beers and unable to concentrate on anything serious, I do very occasionally watch a bit of it, for a laugh - Part of the attraction, I think, is watching people who believe the thing is for real - Just think Sky put some of it on PPV and get thousands of takers.
