Bruce Olson 1957

Post by Jsankey »

Im confused My grandfather Bruce Olson was a golden glove champion (Champion of Champions in Canada) 30/32 amateur Career and 29/30 Professional He lost his last fight in 1957 in Portland He was put in a coma for 2 weeks and His opponent paid his Hospital bills (i cant find my copy of Guinness book of records to confirm the opponents name (which him and the other guy had the record for most tonnage in the ring at one time from '70 - '75.) The only record of a Bruce Olson i can find died of the fight in oregon against Ewart Potgieter. If anyone out there can help me straighten this out that'd be great :) Im pretty sure that the bruce olson on here is my grandfather (there is to many similarities for it not to be him) But the stats are wrong and he didnt die in the fight! He was born in South Dakota and the birthdate is off also but anyways unless there was 2 fighters out of seattle named bruce olson in the same time era then this is wrong

Canadian amateur champion in 1930-32 and still fighting in 1957, do I follow you correctly? Olson was the 1956 Oregon Golden Gloves Heavyweight champion.

Yes i just got ahold of my grandmother earlier this evening. To double check everything and The only Bruce Olson out of Seattle was my grandpa. That is the man on here as Bruce Olson born in 1930 but in June NOT 01/01/30 and he was born in South Dakota not Eugene Oregon and he was also 6'5" 265 (not 6'4" (i know its only an inch but my grandma made sure to correct me there too :)....

He was golden Glove champ in Oregon and Canada he was "champion of Champions" or some such (my mother quoted that phrase and double confirmed from Grandmother)

The fight with Ewart Potgieter in Oregon in '57 was My grandpa and Ewart they had most tonnage in the ring at once in Guinness book of records from '70 to '75. my grandpa got hit in the back of the head and there was a blood clot and he was in a coma for 2 weeks, but he didnt Die. He died in 2001 from Lung cancer and a multitude of other minor things. I have to say though Ewart was an awesome person though. He took the winnings from that fight and paid my gramps hospital bills while he was in the coma. he was a class act.

Also growing up my sister in Junior High did a report on my gramps career and like i stated above. We thought his record was 30/32 (Amateur) and 29/30 Professional but since he passed away 6 years ago i cant ask him now. It says here he has 6 wins 4 losses and 2 KOs but none of that sounds correct from what ive been told by my grandpa and family! Ya know. 1 way or another Id like to get my knowledge straightened out OR the records fixed, So my grandpa is remembered by me my family and the WORLD correctly hehe :)

Sorry im retarded :) (29 out of 30 fights he won) 29 wins 1 loss (against potgieter) was what i thought his prof. career was. and 30 fights 2 losses amateur. Soon as i get ahold of my uncle he should know more (or maybe one of my great uncles they would probably remember more then my uncle. But either way obviously there is some stats remembered wrong SOMEwhERE :) where can i find more info? especially Goldne GLoves records and prof. Damnit i wish i had spent more time with him and asked more questions while i was old enough to understand and remember

it was said that olson suffered damage in his 9th professional fight....
and ya he got hit in the back of the head and it caused a blood clot :( He was in a coma for 2 weeks. Not surprising though Ewart Potgieter was a monster :) 7'2" 325 lbs holy crap that had to hurt. but him paying my gramps hospital bills was awesome though. It really goes to show how most boxers dont have hard feelings towards there opponents, its just a exhibition, a sport, There just there to beat on each for awhile and best friends right after. Kinda like fights in elementary school aye? lol

I doubt he had 30 pro fights in a little over a year (he turned pro in 1956). Though I don't have newspaper proof in my files, I suspect he also lost those other fights as well.

more then likely :) I believe you. I never had the chance to sit down and talk to him about it really. He got his leg broke in 8 places on the job at boeing years ago and was in pain ALOT the last 20 years so I never had alot of private time with him. I was also an idiot teenager and didnt spend the time i should have with him :(

Anyways, He was 6'5". and He was born in South Dakota (ill get the city later today and it was June of 1930 not January.

ah your in Seattle :) How is it that every reference i find thinks He died in 57 its crazy.

btw i really appreciate the help. (This means alot to me, I would like him remembered alive :) the last 50 years. He was a very good man a huge teddy bear that snored louder then a grizzly hah.) Id also like Potgeiter rememberd for beating him not killing him. I wonder if even potgieter KNEW or KNOWS he didnt die!!!!!!

btw There is a fighter im trying to remember his name. He was From AUburn and when he came out he was a big thing (late 80's early 90's) He trained with my grandpa and my uncle. I cant remember for hte life of me though!
