SKELTON, WHAT IS &WHAT COULD OF BEEN

Post by overhand_right »

JUst imagine if Skelton & co had some foresight and took on Maskaev in Russia for the short money last DEc 06? He could of relieved The Big O of his WBC belt and spent 07 raking it in over in the states in this whole Peter/Vitali stakes, or a Holyfield payday in Manc etc.

Whats the big plan now? Safety first dull win over Sprott and nothing scheduled, no ranking.

McCall, asnyone?

He should have took it, he would of been in with a great chance of winning. Sure, had he lost he could have went back to fighting British level which he has been doing anyway without having that shot at the world title.

Chances are, he may have won it and been WBC champion, but we'll never know and with the way things are going this talked off world title shot for Skelton may never happen which is a shame for him.

Maskeev is a big accurate puncher though and Skeletons pretty easy to find. I reckon Skeleton would have been ko'd, especially after Williams had him wobbling in the first fight and doing a balerina act. impression in the second.

I don't know what Maskeev is playing at to be honest, hes had the opportunity for a big payday and seems to be letting it slip

That's the point though, don't understand why he didn't take the shot. What was he worried about, damaging his reputation?

As you guys said if the worst happens and he gets flattened in 3 rounds he just goes back to fighting for the British and Commonwealth titles.

Huge mistake from Skelton, who's career is plodding along slower than his own, weary legs. He may have got lucky and caught Maskaev with a big punch or more relistically would have been exposed by the Russian's superior Boxing skills and solid jab.

Either way he could have dropped back down to this level he is at now and fought round robin's with his equally uninspiring contempories anyway.

Maybe he was confused by Matt's skin and bones physique?

Matt needed to move up a bit faster and take any chance open to him because of his age - A world title is now a forgotten dream and retirement cant be far away - He was a rough tough exciting fighter who came into the game too late and was innactive just when his chance of getting a title shot presented itself - Very dissapointing.

He has been letting too many chances slip.

FULLY agree he should have taken the WBC fight...even for 20 grand it would've been an amazing chance. As it didn't happen I think he should have been going for the WBO Intercontinental, the EU (why wasn't it pon the line versus Sprott?), and the full EBU titles.

Wasted time....

We need some kind of closure on Skelton. Someones got to bump the old lion off. Will it be David Haye? Its def not going to be Audley.

Is Skelton still going to fight for thr euro title? Why piss about with all that, its time to gamble. Throw him in with a big name, even if its in the states, and see if he has the goods.

Regardless of what you think of his age FW should give him a crack.

Donald? McCall? Guinn? Botha?

What's happened to Sanders, for that matter? And Frans Botha?

Barrett, Beck, and Austin cant have much cred after all being blown away in their last fights (did they ever have any cred?)

John Ruiz a very good call. Holyfield, that would get the worlds attention. Full house at O2 arena, or MEN??

Botha won a 12 rd decision over somone in SA. Sanders bust his hand in his last fight but will be back for another payday.

Good name to have in UK, and would be exciting whilst it lasted. Would like to see some fella force Skelton to fight!

Sanders could blast Skelton in three rounds if he's half-motivated. Skelton is wide open to straight fast shots. He walks in straight, goes back straight.

You know what, Holyfield v Skelton in London might do good business. America has got Holyfield fatigue but with the recent UK boxing resurgence i reckon a good crowd would come out to see an aged legend.

I'm not sure where Skelton is rated but if Holy refuses to retire it could be one of the few remaining winnable significant fights left for him.

Yeah, I knew about these, but both men's comebacks have gone quiet since the aforementioned.

I've never understood why Holyfield hasn't fought here, with so many winnable fights available against guys with aesthetic records with promoters needing good chief support fights.

Why wasn't McBride or Williams v Holyfield made in the past three years for example.

Holyfield is probably the one fight Skelton may actually compete. Only because Holy is 112 years old of course. Still younger than Matt!

Skelton has done nothing to merit a shot at a world title. This makes it even stranger that he would turn an opportunity down.

When did Skelton turn down a fight with Maskaev?... The talk that FW made about the winner of some fight involving Skelton fighting Maskaev was just talk.

The only time I can remember Maskaev being mentioned as an opponent was for Danny Williams post Tyson and pre Klitchsko... Maskaev was definately mentioned then.

Danny also had the opportunity to fight Witherspoon and Sanders earlier on if I remember. But Skelton has been offered didly squat.

December 06 mate, was big talk here.

Skelton turned it down so Peter Okhello got the job, in russia.

True.

Williams/Spoon was 2001 on TYson/Nielsen bill, Sanders figth was late 02 but coincided with ramadan (imagine how bad Sandsers would of whipped Danny?!!)

Sanders was an overrated fat big who got a bs stoppage win over Sprott and capitalised on Wlad's weakness which all you have to do Is hurt him.
