Benn: Floyd can't cope at rope-a-dope

Boxing legend Nigel Benn is under no illusions that Ricky Hatton is up against it when he takes on the sensational American Floyd Mayweather Jnr in the Las Vegas residents backyard in December.

But the former Dark Destroyer is also under no illusions that Mayweather would be up against it if he decided to use 'rope-a-dope' tactics to mimmick Muhammad Ali's 'Rumble in the Jungle' with George Foreman.

"From what I'm told Mayweather's definitely underestimating Ricky, like Doug DeWitt and Gerald McClellan underestimated me," Benn said.

"If Mayweather thinks (Jose Luis) Castillo was faking his hurt from the bodyshot (that knocked him out) then all I can say is he's in for abit of a suprise when Ricky digs a few of them in.

"No warrior fakes fractured bone. No fighter would sit down and not fight unless their corner wouldn't let them, or unless they simply couldn't breath or stand.

"But this Mayweather is so fast on his feet and his lead left hooks and uppercuts and lead rights all come from nowhere.

"He must be so hard to pin down. What he doesn't want to do, though, is back off to the ropes too much - if Ricky's allowed to open up he's going to take you.

"He's (Hatton) about the most exciting fighter I've seen when he opens up against a man on the ropes, and Mayweather doesn't want to be there."

Benn, though, hints that Mayweather will be too much for the Manchester Hitman.

"Ricky would definitely have to dig in a few bodyshots early on, and, like I said, Mayweather must be so hard to pin down."

What does getting in the ring have to do with anything? does it make him a better man who is exempt from criticism? Does it allow him to slag boxing off in the national press but collect a pay check if offered, or a free ticket to a big fight, or a platform for his own mindless ramblings.

I don't think that's fair - BEnn is the most excitibg British fighter of the last 30 years (perhaps with Hamed and HAtton.)

I just think he's given up material glory and shed his ego - which are all great things - now he gives time to people and I believe sold his old belts.

Benn whould be remembered warmly and the fact he has turned his life to helping people (although I don't agree with organized religion) is a good thing.
