Julio Cesar Gonzalez returns to Germany on January 17 for the first defence of his WBO light-heavyweight title against Hungary's unbeaten Zsolt Erdei, 18-0 (13). Gonzalez won the title from long-time champion Dariusz Michalczewski via split decision in Germany in October.
Erdei, a former world amateur champion, is a stablemate of Michalczewski and currently stands at number three in the WBO rankings.
Yes, it does sound like an odd defence, the guy is not a mandatory. DM's promoters must have some options on Gonzales and their going to do their very best to get the belt back.
I hope Gonzales comes through, but I have this feeling he'll have to score a KO to win.
Joe Calzaghe will be keeping a close eye on the situation. He has designs on the WBO light-heavyweight title next year (there was talk of a WBA title crack for the Welshman, but after all the talk allegedly always settles for WBO or WBU titles for his boys).
Boxing Monthly mentioned that Peter Oboh's managment are looking into a possible WBA fight with Branco, is there any developments on this?
I've not heard nothing, but nobody would want to fight Oboh unless they really had to. He's too good.
Yes agreed, Lightsoot's post on my rankings before last made me look into Oboh's career more carefully and thanks to boxrec you can really see that most of Oboh's losses have come either at heavyweight or against fighters that are better than Branco.
It would be a great chance and Peter is deserving, I really hope it happens.
