O/T HD TV and Home Cinema System sound problem

I think what you need is an AV receiver, which receives the signal and transmits it to the speakers. It is needed to decode the signal and tell it what speakers to send it to. When you play a DVD, this information is contained on the disc, but when you are receiving TV signal it's not the same.

Also, whatever is transmitted needs to be dolby surround for the speakers to work properly.

This is a problem with some surround sound systems depending how many scart sockets they have. I got one with four scart sockets, that connect up to the tv, vcr, dvd and encoder/STB respectively. That means everything goes through the surround system. But many of these surround systems don't have 4 scart sockets (only 2 or 3). Maybe the dvd socket is also an encoder and perhaps you can plug a scart from your sky box directly to this socket.

Apart from that pal disconnect the speaker prongs from up your arse and save yourself the pain.

I dragged mysel finto the 21st century by getting a whopping Samsung LCD TV and Digital Cinema system. All well and good wen it plays DVDs, the sound comes from all spaekiers but cannot do the same with it and my Sky.

You turn the DVD off to get the Sky on and the sound then comes only from the TV. Do I need a cable going from my Sky to the Cinema system or TV or what?

Any advice? There is a section on connecting an external digital component, Sky box, but it says I need an optical cable. The shop sould me one but it has two sound speaker prongs on each end and that does not match to the system.

Need more details on your system. You don't say whether you are using buit in speakers on the Samsung or separate speakers connected to a receiver/amp.

If you are going from your Sky directly to the Samsung LCD with an HDMI cable and you are using surround speakers directly connected to the Samsung LCD, you shouldn't have any problems.

If you are connecting by SCART directly to the Samsung and using the Samsung's speakers, you will not, or are unlikely to get, 5.1 surround sound so you will have to use an optical SPDIF cable, given that you have an SPDIF input spare on your LCD.

You don't say which model Samsung or what your system is so it is difficult to give a definitive answer, but if you have a receiver or amp, use either the HDMI to the receiver amp for both sound and video or, alternatively, connect the analogue component out from the Sky to the Samsung or the receiver/amp and the optical SPDIF out to your receiver/amp.

I've got a Samsung and I'd suggest either using a SCART splitter to the AV Receiver if you've run out of sockets, or what Rumpole says and connect the SKY sound to the TV at the back.

I did a similar thing, spending a big wad on a 52 incher plus the surround system.
Also had sound on DVD but none from the telly at all, played with the settings but to no avail.
However a fella came the next day 2 install the satellite and he did it easy for me, it was something on the setting but i'm still a bit of a technophobe.
If the sound works thru the DVD, it will def work so at least it ain't broke

How are you mate, you caused a lot of trouble in my workplace when I got back there and demanded a full size snooker table, I'm still in talks with the Union.

Will post the system specs when I get home. The sound when we play the TV comes from the TV but we have an amp and speaker system that we use for the home cinema. DVDs sound awesome and I want that to work with the Sky.

There are two scart connections in the back of the home cinema DVD thing so should I put my Sky one into that and then try to get the Sky up? We can sometimes get the images but without the sound.

Sounds like your 'Tele' does not have 5.1 sound you will need to route everything through your amp. I will know better once you send me the specs' or even the model numbers. I don't use scart these days, only HDMI but when I did, I routed all SCART connections to a switch box called a Trilogy. As soon as I changed device, i.e. switched the DVD on the Trilogy automatically picks up the new device and outputs the new device's input to the amplifier. If you want to be really posh and make absolutely top use of the high def' picture, buy a SCART to component converter. Connect the output from the Trilogy to the input of the convertor and send the signal to the Samsung as component video ( Y Pb Pr ) then sit back and enjoy. The sound will go via your amp to the separate speakers , NOT to the Samsungs speakers; and you should get full 5.1 surround sound.

Sorry Terry, I forgot to say yes.

If all you have is Sky and a DVD player, then put the SCART into the Amp.

You only need a SCART switcher if you don't have enough inputs on the Amp for all the devices you wish to connect.
