I read that Marcus Portman was in the frame to fight Ryan for the December 5 fight. Serge Vigne and Thomas McDonagh also had their names linked to a fight on that date.

Marcus, by the way, said to me he'd love to fight Rhodes and would jab his head off all night.

Mcdonagh, or Brian hughes was offered the fight six weeks ago.
As for Portman, his manager was offered the fight weeks ago but said no thanks.
It's not a big show, just a show to get fighters fights, and keep people in work so the budgets aren't spectacular as anyone involved in promoting knows.

Not surprised at that.

As much as like and rate Portman, Rhodes would beat him in four or five rounds. Errol knows that as well.

He didnt turn the fight down, did he? Errol (Johnson, trainer and manager) did. Portman is a brave kid, fight anyone - they are the kind that need to be protected.

Errol knows when one of his fighters would cop a beating.

There are a couple of issues to stepping up.
Firstly the board needed to be convinced that Rhodes could do the weight. Remember it was 10 years before his last fight, that Rhodes had fought at LM.
Secondly, opponents have to say yes, particularly those holding the belts to enable him to step up.
Rhodes doesn't bring a title to the table, so champs are at liberty to say no thanks.
Look at the end of the day whenever there is a thread about Rhodes we go through the same old routine - shot fighter, always fights bums etc etc.
If he's such an easy touch, why don't the so called rank fighters take an easy touch, and a good pay day then move on ?
The logical fight is Pryce for the Commonwealth.
If Jamie does the business at European, maybe he'll vacate the British.
There is nothing standing in the way of the Pryce fight - there is a logical fit Promotionally and Mangerially.
This latest fight is about staying active but it's a reasonable opponent.
McDonagh may have been a better option to placate some - but if the man don't want it, he don't want it.
Portman ? - enough said.
