I like McGuigan here by decision, with Gomez taking a beating late in the fight but surviving to hear the final bell. Wilfredo would have likely won most of the first 8 rounds with his boxing ability, but after getting hit repeatedly by those vicious hooks downstairs by the Irishman he will start to become much more stationary.

Once that happens Barry will tear into him and smother him with his high punch output and Wilfredo will go on the defensive for the remainder of the fight. He will flurry in spurts here and there, but Barry`s constant aggression and workrate will have won him the day when all is said and done.

He recieved a beating because he quit in the corner with his whinning about the "heat".

Receiving a beating is not a badge of honor, especially in a fight that he should have won blindfolded.

McGuigan was one of the bravest featherweights ever to fight in the ring. Barry did not quit in his corner, he fought like a demon for 14 rounds and was ahead on the cards going into the 15th, but his agressive tactics in the 12th,13th and 14th burnt him out and yet he managed to survive the 15th round and refused to stay down.

Cruz was usd to the intense heat while McGuigan was not, but he still was able to survive the last round onslaught.

That is what I am talking about.....excuses, blaming the heat. He quit!! He needed to suck it up, and instead he sat on the stool between rounds and whined.

That's why he pushed himself to the limits of endurance to make it to the final bell.

Gomez was a GREAT Super Bantamweight, but nothing special at Featherweight. Other than his KO losses to Nelson and a less than world class Alfredo Layne, he also got a hometown decision against Rocky Lockridge. McGuigan at his best has too much stamina and he'd wear Gomez down with his body attack. McGuigan either by clear UD or very late stoppage.

Mcguigan was a good fighter but was not on the same level as Gomez.

Gomez by brutal KO within 5.
