Detached retinas

Post by crooked nose »

Eye injuries have brought abrupt endings to many careers over the years. Does it seem like there are fewer of these incidents today? Have there been any recently? What big names have had to quit because of eye injuries? Off the top of my head: Harold Weston, Jr. (thumbed by Hearns), Earnie Shavers, Ray Leonard (but not so bad that he couldn't stage about a half dozen comebacks), Jeff Chandler. Who else?

Both Fidel LaBarba and Ely Clark come to mind.
It is odd that both Clark and LaBarba retired from boxing because of eye injuries. Clark quit boxing after his bout with LaBarba, when one of his eyes was severely damaged.

Leotis Martin had to retire with a detached retina after his biggest win over Sonny Liston in 1969. Terrible shame for one of the most underrated heavyweights of the Ali era.

Mauro Mina, The Ring Magazine #1 Light heavyweight contender from 1961 to 1962 was scheduled to fight Harold Johnson for the title in 1962, suffered a detached retina against Cuban Lino Rendon, retired in 1964.

Sugar Ray Seales eventually went blind because he kept fighting for some 3-4 years after he tore his retina.

Also...it demonstrates how hard Sonny could hit!

I think Leroy Jones (undefeated challenger against Holmes) had to quit from detatched retina in the early '80's...anybody remember that fight?

Read an article (a Garfield?) recently on Bob Foster where he claimed to have been the real reason Mina retired. Not sure about that claim
Actually, the Rendon fight were Mauro allegedly tore his retina was previous to the fight with Bob Foster (which the Peruvian won by decision).

I think the article you are talking about is this one:
http://www.newmexicoboxing.com/history_ ... oster.html

Foster claim that he retired Mauro is not the only dubious one he makes:
Four months later, Foster was knocking out guys again. He fought twice in the D.C. area where he was living, scoring KO’s in the 1st and 4th, before he was matched up against another fight. This time, he was scheduled to fight Mauro Mina in Mina’s hometown of Lima, Peru, in November, ’63.

“Mina was a light-heavyweight and my record says I lost a ten-round decision. Hell, I lost that fight! I didn’t lose that! In fact, I retired Mina! They sent me down there to be used as a tune-up fight because Mina was getting ready to fight Dick Tiger, who was champ at the time . . . . but by the time I got through with Mina, there was nothing left.

“It was a messed up fight. One round, we’d fight two minutes, the next we might fight five or four minutes. I’d go back to my corner and ask my trainer, Billy*, what was going on. [*Foster’s trainer was Billy Edwards. Edwards had been a light heavyweight contender before he retired. (Edwards passed away in 1996.) I’d say, ‘Damn, that was a long round!’

“Well, I couldn’t knock that guy out. Every time I hurt Mina, I’d hear BING! They’d ring the bell to end the round. But if he was getting the best of me, damn, we’d fight for five minutes! I messed him up good though, and he couldn’t fight no more.”
In that article he also claims that Doug Jones koed him because he was a six round fighter back then, and Ernie Terrel knocked him out with a push and a shove.
