He has mentioned many times he was close to Ezzard and saw a lot of his fights.

Well, how about Wallace "Bud" Smith and the great Freddie Miller?
..elmer...i'm squeezed for time right now...i've planned to do a thread on both bud smith and jimmy carter ..the have a connection....and will do so when i can.
but...for a quick answer...i never saw freddie miller fight as i was just a kid when he retired. (i missed bob fitzsimmons entirely, as he was dead.) i knew freddie's daughter well in my nightclub days. i was a comic, she was singer.
i saw bud smith several times and had a speaking acquaintance with him in his post-fight years.
yes...i saw ezzard. to say i was "close" to him is an exaggeration, probably caused by my own writing here. i got to know him a bit after he retired, saw him when he was a light heavy when i visited a friend of mine who lived a block away...he was the brother of ezzard's fiance. (whom he married. she died about a month ago. no publicity wanted.) i knew..and still know...many of the people who managed ezzard and a guy who was his personal assistant. lots of stories there.
box buzz will come on and say" if this is his idea of a post when he is squeezed for time imagine what he'll write when he ISN'T busy", but pay no attention to him.
