I think Ricky is in with a good chance particularly as in the run up to the day there will be all the mayweather hype going on.
In terms of the others Hamilton has lost a bit of credibility by not wining and going to Switzerland for tax, so the biggest threats are Radcliff and Murray probably.
Thoughts?

Just like Calzaghe and Haye were more or less ignored by mainstream media, the socialist media want to femanize the youth
World class boxing Chamiopns are the last thing the mainstream media will promote
BBC sports personality is a joke anyway
Haye should have been nominated.... I would have him above Joe Calzaghe. Yes, Ricky needed to have been nominated -cause it would look stupid had he just beaten Floyd.
Frankie Gavin also unlucky, and in other sports - Dario Franchitti... two BEST on the planet in their respective sports - yet Andrew Murray - who has had a pretty shitty full of injury year is there.

Don't think many Brits follow Indy, plus it's arguable second to CART nowadays. Plus Amateur Boxing isn't followed as much as Pro, which isn't followed as much as it used to anyway.stujones wrote:Haye should have been nominated.... I would have him above Joe Calzaghe. The fact that we now have 2 boxers for 2 years in the running is a testament to the awareness of them by the British public. haye should be on here, above Hatton. Hopefully next year.
You've got to have Hatton there INCASE he does do the greatest sporting achievement by a brit this year... I know its a day after, but if Hatton wins vs Floyd he could win the whole thing. But Haye's achievement is definately better than Joe's. So odd that Andrew Murray has regressed this last 12 months and is in the list.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Don't think many Brits follow Indy, plus it's arguable second to CART nowadays. Yeah, true regarding Franchitti's sport not being the most popular - but again we should be celebrating our winners.
I couldn't agree more mate, but we have to remember that this is a BBC award, not an indendent one. BBC doesn't cover Indy, simple as that, and it does cover F1 on the radio.stujones wrote:You've got to have Hatton there INCASE he does do the greatest sporting achievement by a brit this year... I agree that Haye should be on there, but don't agree that his achievement is better than Joe's. Yes he fought the best in the division on his home turf, but Kessler is a better fighter P4P (just check the Current Scene, BoxRec and RING ratings) and his performance was better than David's. However, I'm not putting down David's achievement in anyway way, what he did was amazing.
I've been a big Franchitti fan since his CART days, and he's not far off Lewis for talent, but he doesn't get the exposure Hamilton gets.
I'll agree to disagree on Haye and Calzaghe on achievements on this year alone for a few reasons.
1) I'm aint convinved the Kessler should have been ranked ahead of Mormeck in a P4P sense.
2) I don't think it was as convincing a win..... well, Joe didn't WIN on my card (i was albeit in a big minority). Haye did it via KO.
3) Hayes win over Bonin was better than Joe over Manfredo.
4) It was away from home... massive achievement. Joe was a bigger betting favourite than Haye was.

Some of those points are fair but you're forgetting that Mormeck floored David on way to his KO, and he looked very wobbly indeed in the 4th after he was floored.stujones wrote:I'll agree to disagree on Haye and Calzaghe on achievements on this year alone for a few reasons.

Also, I think Kessler will be a (proper) world champion before the end of next year is out. Mormeck is done, and his win over Bell wasn't exactly fair (2:20 timing for the latter rounds when he was blowing out his ass).
Finally, I tend to bias the opponent when a Brit fights, looking for reasons to score for the opponent, and I couldn't do that in the latter round for Mikel. He ran out of ideas. I had it 7-4-1 for Joe at the end.
Apart from that, spot on.

You must have serious, serious issues with either FW or Calzaghe if you don't think he won that fight? Was cut and dry.
Haye more deserving than JC? No chance....

If that's the case Stu, then I'm afraid you haven't a clue how to score a bout. As for Haye being more deserving, absolute tripe. Joe is unbeaten in Donkey's years, and an established champion.stujones wrote:I'll agree to disagree on Haye and Calzaghe on achievements on this year alone for a few reasons.

Bonin is a scrub, Haye's win over Bonin is an utter irrelevance. Beating a B grade fighter is no achievement. Calzaghe has beaten not one but two young lions who were being touted as the future of the division.
It's no competition whatsoever, Calzaghe has a long career behind him, wheras Haye is just getting going.
Haye's win over Mormeck was also a come off the deck job, impressive yes, but deserving of Sports Personality of the year, not in a million years.
Lots of folk on here had it for Calzaghe by 1 or 2 points... Lots of respectable poster. So thats 7-5, or 6-5-1 in terms of rounds. My card was 6-6. A Draw. It might look extreme, but read the old posts and see how many people had it close. lots of people said when I published my card that my giving the 1st and the 10th to Kessler was wrong (MOST agreed with the other four I gave) - but then reading back - I was far from the only one to give these two rounds to Kessler.... Its just I was the only card to give these rounds ONTOP of the four other ones.... So that alot of folk your criticising there.jamesmcdonnell wrote:If that's the case Stu, then I'm afraid you haven't a clue how to score a bout. As for Haye being more deserving, absolute tripe. The competition is called - Sports Personality of the YEAR - Not lets give it to the most deserving servant to a sport over the years.
Is Calzaghe more worthy of P4P ranking than Haye, of course - no disputing that (you would be daft to) - is Calzaghe achievements of the YEARS outweighing Hayes' - Yes.... Is Calzaghes' achievements in 2007 outweighing Haye - Nope.
Lewis Hamilton is going to win this - I don't think he is worthy - but had he won the championship, then should he been not counted for not being "established". Its called sports personality of the year for a reason.
Yeah, definately Hamilton. Agree it shouldn't be.stujones wrote:Lots of folk on here had it for Calzaghe by 1 or 2 points... Lots of respectable poster. So thats 7-5, or 6-5-1 in terms of rounds. Is that Manfredo your calling a young Lion, James? Or if you mean Lacy - sorry that was in 2006. Shall we give it to Johnny Wilkinson for being a world beater in 2003 and dropping a few kicks in 2007?
If Boxrec do a poll of British boxer of 2007 and if Hatton doesn't do Mayweather next week - then I'd seriously hope Haye wins it.... His achievements should be given more respect than it has - its up there with the finest world title wins by a British champion. He beat the Undisputed #1 in the devision in his own back yard. I think it was Ian who made a thread a few months ago asking can we really argue that a British fighter beat the absolute best in his devision, in his prime.... a fair few posters said no (even Curry, Tszyu etc could be argued were not the fighters they were).... Haye's opponent was as close as it gets really.
If there was a lifetime achievement award for an active Boxer - then by all means Calzaghe would walk that one.

In Stu's defence, one difference I see is that of courage. Calzaghe knew he could beat Kessler if his hands held up and he trained well. Haye has fought people who may be domestic level (Bonin, Frag), but these were arguably more daring assignments. Lose either and it's a long way back down the hill; Joe can always retire with the excuse he's ageing.
While Calzaghe's achievements are superior to Haye's, his strength of character hasn't shone so brightly this year. Anyway, let's be happy there's no 'royal snatch' this time.

All I am saying is that Haye's achievements in 2007 beats Joe's. A win over the undisputed #1 in the devision - IN HIS BACK YARD... is better than beating Kessler in Cardiff IMO.Grilling Machine wrote:In Stu's defence, one difference I see is that of courage. Mormeck had fought and beaten the best in his devision - Kessler was an established champion don't get me wrong, more established than Lacy and I am sure he will come again - but for me, for Calzaghe's achievement to have been better than Hayes... Then we needed to see Kessler fight and beat Bute before taking on Joe.
And no - this isn't an "anti" JC post or a bashing of Joe post the event. I was saying this long before the match was agreed.
Yes, Mormeck could be considered beyond his best - but really for his devision Haye's achievements are equal to Hatton beating Tszyu. Although Tszyu was the better fighter P4P... Haye couldn't big a more dangerous task on paper. Yes, I would have had Mormeck in higher P4P position than Kessler prior to each of the bouts. Now its a different story based on the manner of their defeats.
In terms of an affable personality Hatton pisses all over Calzaghe does he not, and its sports personality of the year not sports man. Hatton is also already in the weekend papers today and yesterday and over the next week that will become more so. Ricky Hatton has fought 2 times this year and is about to fight a 3rd and in that he has beaten a fighter who is at least Manfrado's equal and a tough and respected Mexican.
I think Haye deserves a nomination but there is no way on earth most people have heard of or will vote for him, which is a shame cos he can talk the hide legs of a donkey. Maloney should get him on question of sport and stuff like that to broaden his appeal a bit.

The original idea was not the personality of the person, nor even how great they were in their sport, it was the personality shown in action during a given year. If you follow. That's why Mansell won. Replace 'personality' with 'conduct'.josh fg wrote:its sports personality of the year not sports man.
Saying that, I agree it should be called Sportsperson of the Year.

Sports Personality of Year is a misnomer to begin with. It has nothing to do with personality in the first place, but the achievements of a sporting figure/s. Perhaps Sports Personality of the Year was an early PC way of saying Sportsman of The Year – when it should have been Sportsperson of the Year all along.
The award shouldn’t be a retrospective, but in lean years when there are few sporting achievements I notice how a figure from a minority media/spectator sport gets pulled out of the hat – as long as the media induced higher profile sports like football, cricket, rugby, F1, golf, tennis etc doesn’t produce a valiant second. Does anyone remember the speech from that famous high achieving dyslexic - Steve Redgrave - 5 times he had to come back over 20 odd years to the annual backslapping sportsfest before he won the award.
If Calzaghe gets the award I think it would be well deserved unless of course Hatton does the business in Vegas – the latter would be an exceptional sporting achievement.

The contest is about as stupid as miss world but a lot more fair since the public decide - I wouldnt argue about who achieved more between Haye or Calzaghe, both did a fantastic job and I would call it even - Now if Ricky pulls off a win against Mayweather thats another matter, Rickys acheivement would overshadow either of the other two by a long, long way - Probably go to a rugby player I have never heard of, cant stand the game, never have.

I agree with the comment above, especially as boxing seems to be overlooked by the mainstream media. In my view, Hatton should have received the award in 2005, but it went to the Cricket team for the Ashes victory.BBC sports personality is a joke anyway
In my view, Lewis Hamilton's name is or will shortly be, engraved onto the trophy very soon, I'm sad to say. Calzaghe, Hatton are being overlooked greatly.
Voters should remember, Hamilton never won the F1 title, Calzaghe beat Kessler & if Hatton beat Mayweather, then he'll be a winner aswell. It annoys me greatly that boxing in general, the fighters, they do not receive the recognition the deserve when it comes to things like Sports personality of the year award, etc.
I bet a lot of the voters, if you were to ask them why they are not voting for Hatton, Calzaghe, it's because they are against boxing, etc.
