Re: iF Ricky lost
I think much of that depends on the manner of his loss, if he gets schooled and humiliated for 12 rounds and Mayweather takes the piss and does things like touching the back of his boot before throwing upercuts (a la Roy Jones vs Woods) then Hatton's stock will be irreparably damaged and he will always be an affable powerful lad who caught Tzue at the right time.Al Savani wrote:'To lose to a world champion is one thing, but to lose to the best pound-for-pound fighter walking the face of the planet - there's no shame in that!'

If he looses but wins 4 + rounds then there is no shame
If he KD's Mayweather but still looses then people will scream for a rematch.
If he has the aggression and the Vegas crowd gets pissy then that's fine too
If he gets KOed then he's fucked cos everyone knows Mayweather can't punch.

If Hatton loses this (close, bet on it) fight, the greatest british sporting personality of recent memory will promptly be written off by the masses and forgotten by the general public.
The fact that he lost to an all time great champ (IMO Mayweather won't be truly great unless he beats Hatton) won't even matter, whatever he achieves afterwards. It would be a crying shame
Hope he kicks butt.

I don't think he will be forgotten by the general public, who are only aware that Hatton is some boxer who fights in Las Vegas every s6 months and used to fight in Manchester. He's on S-occer AM's sofa's every few months and the sun loves him and his drinking/eating habits. He'll fight on,maybe against Oscar de la Hoya at the new Wembley or something, fooling himself that Oscar is some massive name over here (probably one-in-a-million have seen himfight). He'll want to try to beat the 50,000 that showed up for Warren's last event, ofcourse. I find it hilarous that before Calzaghe-Kessler they were saying there were 33,000 applications for the 3,900 tickets, now they're coming out with 70,000 as a figure for applications!
He won't be written off, people will just say he wasn't a welterweight ;)

Yet if he was still fighting for SN you'll be claiming he could have sold the MEN arena out 10 times over.boxingchat wrote:Al Savani wrote:I don't think he will be forgotten by the general public, who are only aware that Hatton is some boxer who fights in Las Vegas every s6 months and used to fight in Manchester. for the record i will state that hatton is the best light welterweight in the world at this time but his preparation/conditioning for this fight has been on the money and he will be as dangerous at welter against floyd as any man has been before. what i'm saying is if hatton loses it wont be a weight issue.

I dont think the average fan, never mind the general public realise how hard a task Ricky has beating Mayweather - I agree if Ricky loses say 7 to 5 there is no shame whatsoever but to the average Joe, its a loss - It is a mountain to climb for Ricky and we all know its his toughest challenge yet, but I believe he will do it and be recognized as our greatest boxer at any weight of all time - I also believe every British boxer past and present would acknowledge him as such should he be victorious, even the likes of Haye, Cazaghe, Lewis and Bruno because they know as fighters, what Ricky is up against - If he loses, Ricky will still be remembered as an all time great but the win would put him above the rest as the best ever - What an accolade, winning the belt is almost insignificant, its beating Mayweather who many consider is a totally impossible task - Its going to be a great Christmas for us British fight fans, three out of three, Calzaghe, Haye and the icing on top of the preverbial cake Ricky Hatton,GO RICKY

But Eubank says you have to keep losing to be great and take a load of punches :)WildWaylon wrote:I dont think the average fan, never mind the general public realise how hard a task Ricky has beating Mayweather - I agree if Ricky loses say 7 to 5 there is no shame whatsoever but to the average Joe, its a loss - It is a mountain to climb for Ricky and we all know its his toughest challenge yet, but I believe he will do it and be recognized as our greatest boxer at any weight of all time - I also believe every British boxer past and present would acknowledge him as such should he be victorious, even the likes of Haye, Cazaghe, Lewis and Bruno because they know as fighters, what Ricky is up against - If he loses, Ricky will still be remembered as an all time great but the win would put him above the rest as the best ever - What an accolade, winning the belt is almost insignificant, its beating Mayweather who many consider is a totally impossible task - Its going to be a great Christmas for us British fight fans, three out of three, Calzaghe, Haye and the icing on top of the preverbial cake Ricky Hatton,GO RICKY
How is Mayweather an 'impossible' task when Zab and Oscar, years past their bests, were both running away with it for six rounds?
Personally I think Tszyu would be still be his greatest win, because I absolutely could not see him beating Tszyu at all. I thought he was made for Kostya. I can't actually see Mayweather winning against Hatton.

If Ricky loses then he won't be the elite fighter he was made out to be, he'll just be an average world class fighter.
STP, De La Hoya used totally different pressure tatics behind a jab and solid skills which Hatton doesn't do. De La Hoya lacked the stamina for his style.
Hatton's style of pressure has no chance against someone with timing, speed and accuracy. It's just coming forward, diving In with chin In the air and no defence then holding and roughhousing with body shots.
Just because Floyd's a bit weak to certain pressure doesn't mean all pressure fighting will trouble him.

DLH's not a pressure fighter. Like Mayweather, he's a counterpuncher, but he had to play the role of pressure fighter against Floyd, otherwise there would have been no fight at all. The pressure style did not suit Oscar and, though fairly successful while exercising it, he eventually ran out of gas.Max Molyneux wrote:If Ricky loses then he won't be the elite fighter he was made out to be, he'll just be an average world class fighter.

Your description of Ricky's style of pressure makes him sound very one-dimensional. If that's your opinion, so be it, but I think you are overlooking some skills and subtleties Hatton has in his armoury, such as excellent foot speed and balance, quick, sudden lateral movement which enables him to place those rib-cracking shots so accurately. You made him sound as plodding as Carlos Baldomir who was helplessly following Floyd around the ring all night. Ricky will be fast enough to stick to him like glue and I believe he will win this fight.

I did say, many consider an impossible task, while my own view is Ricky will win - Beating Mayweather will be his greatest win in most peoples eyes but I have to agree with you, I didnt think Hatton could beat Tszyu whereas I can see him beating Mayweather - Maybe its partly because of his win over Tszyu that I and many more think Hatton can get the victory over PBF plus Mayweathers close decision over DLH - Hattons 200% confidence he can win is another factor, he didnt have that against Tszyu - Its a glory fight, beating Mayweather not so much winning the world welterweight title, hes already done that.STP wrote:But Eubank says you have to keep losing to be great and take a load of punches :)WildWaylon wrote:I dont think the average fan, never mind the general public realise how hard a task Ricky has beating Mayweather - I agree if Ricky loses say 7 to 5 there is no shame whatsoever but to the average Joe, its a loss - It is a mountain to climb for Ricky and we all know its his toughest challenge yet, but I believe he will do it and be recognized as our greatest boxer at any weight of all time - I also believe every British boxer past and present would acknowledge him as such should he be victorious, even the likes of Haye, Cazaghe, Lewis and Bruno because they know as fighters, what Ricky is up against - If he loses, Ricky will still be remembered as an all time great but the win would put him above the rest as the best ever - What an accolade, winning the belt is almost insignificant, its beating Mayweather who many consider is a totally impossible task - Its going to be a great Christmas for us British fight fans, three out of three, Calzaghe, Haye and the icing on top of the preverbial cake Ricky Hatton,GO RICKY

I don't think he will win but as I have said befor thought he had no chance against Kosta however am more convinced in this one. If he beats Kosta it shows a real veriation in the kinds of styles he can beat and puts him up on the P4P list.
What did everyone think of Lennox's comments that he thinks Hatton will have to do it inside 4 rounds if he does it at all. I think Hatton has good enough stamina to do it in any round but aggree he'll probably need a KO and certainly believe he has to pin Maywether to the roaps where possible.

Ricky will give his all, 100%, that I'm sure of! No-one can ask for more or criticise Ricky for doing as much.Al Savani wrote:'To lose to a world champion is one thing, but to lose to the best pound-for-pound fighter walking the face of the planet - there's no shame in that!'

Hatton will do Britain proud whatever the case. It's a great time for british boxing at the moment, especially in light of recent wins by Haye & Calzaghe, but in my view, Hatton has the hardest & trickiest assignment of the lot in Mayweather.
My heart has been saying Ricky will win ever since the fight was announced, but my head the opposite. However, in the last few weeks, I have been in two minds as to whom I think will win.
If Hatton does it, he should be knighted. How about an open-top bus tour like Tim Witherspoon had after defeating Bruno? Fans would be there in their droves!

No but the risk to reward ratio is higher. Witter is difficult to fight and even more difficult for a fighter like hatton to look good against, however Mayweather is probably more difficult cos he is more difficult to hit, however witter puts fighters off ballence with his stance and chainging of leads and he almost certainly hits harder.rhino222 wrote:interesting that you seem to be stating that witter stands more of a chance against hatton than mayweather does....
In a situation that Hatton is comming off a defeat to Mayweather it'd be daft to fight another tricky fighter who has a punch when he could fight the relativly state forward Rees.
