Calzaghe Question

Ok I am not a big Calzaghe fan ( those of you who read Current Scene Forum know this), but this question is in no way me ripping Calzaghe, its honestly because I dont know the answer.

Robin Reid is regarded as one of the best challanges Calzaghe has been given in the ring, why after their fight in 1999 did Calzaghe never grant Reid a rematch?

Honestly I am just curious....

Wasn't for lack of trying on Reids part. He hasn't rematch many of his opponents in fairness, apart from Mario Veit cos the WBO being a inscrutable sanctioning body installed him as a mandatory

Probably because it wasn't one of Joe's happier experiences in the ring. He deserved to win, but it was hard work.

If the winner doesn't want to give a rematch then he shouldn't, it's the other guys fault for losing.. why give someone added motivation, when you know you've already beating them when it was 50/50? May aswell get a new challenge.

Although it was a close fight, there is no doubting Calzaghe was the winner. Reid landed some good right hands, but generally was not busy enough to 'win' rounds.

The only people who call it for Reid are the anti-Calzaghe brigade, of which there are a few on here :)

Truth is, there wasn't really any need for a rematch, although I guess if FA had been promoting Calzaghe at the time we would have had about 5 fights between the two fighters ;)

All the above is true,

however Reid did nothing to get himself the rematch did he. Trying to win other lesser version was never going to work and he came up short against Ottke (the decision says he lost) and Lacy. If he'd have won either of those then he could have gotten hisd rematch as a unificiation fight but he took a big chance by going through that route.

Personally I think he should have been more active and gone down the Commonwealth/European titles route and become mandatory challenger again.

However he wouldn't have the rematch......

And in my view, he lost a fair decision when they did fight. Yes it was close, but he did lose.

In fairness I thought he won vs Ottke. Strange we criticise fighters for worrying too much about other fighters (i.e. Witter) and then criticise them for not chasing the other fighter enough.
