Khan undercard WTF

Post by josh fg »

No disrespect to the fighters on there but surly when he has a platform to display his best fighters to a mass audience on ITV Warren could have done better than this! http://www.boxrec.com/date_search.php?y ... m=12&dd=08

Its not the quality of his fighters I object to but the quality of the fights, 2 fights confirmed and the rest are against TBA and I'm not overly excited by dean Frances verses Micheal Gbenga who's greatest achievement seems to have been to lose to a wide decision to Charles Adamu (you know the bloke who once lost to an inexperienced froch) (http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer)

Are we to take it from this that Warren has taken his bat home with ITV and no longer wants to work with them and doesn't want them to renew the contract.

Us boxing fans don't ask for much just one Steven Bell vs Femi Fehintola on the bill for us to watch after the main event. Common Frank its good for the sport which you make your money from its good for your relationship with the TV company.

Unless the Williams fight is on ITV which I doubt this is a disaster.

The main event is the only thing 95% of people tuning in are interested in, why should the promoter spend good money to please a load of whinging old women on a boxing forum?

Quite.

Then the old whingeing women (for this read 'boxing fans rather than Khan groupies') simply should not go to the bill at all.

The Francis match, if it goes ahead, is truly terrible.

Its the same as the "Lockett deserves to be ranked number 1" and "Woods is a better fight for Calzaghe than Hopkins" rubbish that gets spouted on here.

Just try and get it into your thick heads that there is a whole wide world out there that doesn't give 2 hoots about the Micky Mouse world of British boxing and its "honest pro's" and thrilling undercard fights.

Main event sells, always has, always will, why spend money on the filler?

Maybe to introduce another of his fighters to a group of people who aren't boxing fans more Khan fans. Maybe have them come away from the event with something else to talk about and to look out for in the future. Who knows with Calzaghe a year away from retiring, does he want to put all his eggs into Macca and Khans baskets? Maybe for the future of his own boxers, the ones who are being left to go stale and are not headliners, why not try to further their careers? Maybe giving people better value for money will encourage them to buy again, boxing is in a bit of a boom at the moment but for how long?

Ok Brook v Thompson could have been that fight and it's a shame it's not happening.

Am I ok to discuss who could be the next England manager when my opinion wont be taken into account by the FA and I don't really know the process they use?

People may watch the coverage to the end so to give them another good fight would mean that they would be more likely to do so again, particularly if the Khan fight is over in 4 rounds or less.

I gave Warren a lot of credit for the Fehintola fight which was really good for the viewers and the TV if they continued to watch. It is also good for the winners career cos people have heard of him (if Warren had promoted that winner then all the better for him).

This doesn't represent value for money for ITV so to me seems like bad business practice. "Khaosai-Galaxy" could you declare for me if you have any interest in sports network, I'm just wondering because you previously said it was inappropriate to criticise Warren's sun column.

Its a reasonable question I even explained why I asked it, it seems that Boxingchat has an interest with Warren, I didn't say do you work for I said do you have an interest, that could be anything from being mates with one of his fighters to having some business dealings to indeed work for him.

However on the substantive do you not think people who watch on after the Khan fight would like to see some good undercard fights of the quality of Fheantola vs Bull?

KG work for Sports Network, that's the funniest thing I've heard since Howard Eastman asked Garry Richardson to name a middleweight fighter.

Am I confused here, or should this thread have read 'Khan undercard,' (not Hatton).

Anyways... I happen to think the undercard is a stinker and the reasons why are plainly obvious:

1) Alledgedly has lost his megabucks deal with ITV. He gets a lot less dates now and they only cover Khan. He is obviously going to milk it for all he can... plus you can imagine Khan is earning a vast amount of money.

2) I reckon Alledgedly is looking to throw his lot fully in with Setanta. You heard what he said in his last post fight interview about where the best boxing was being shown. If this is the case, he isn't going to do anything to please ITV.

He has a history of throwing his lot in with companies breaking into boxing, (Sky, when ITV came back and now Setanta).

The days of this being a sport where consideration is giving to developing talent are long gone I'm afraid. It's a business pure and simple now - and one with a very short term focus.

The short termism is completely bone headed. Its not like boxing is established and people are prepared to forgo a couple of stinkers. I wonder how many fans will come for the undercard, I'm the kind of person who would happily watch Peter Buckley but even I would bawk at turning up early to watch that crap.

I'm not sure of the way around the short termism. Perhaps the TV companies need to hand out longer term deals with an emphasis on developing fighters. Exclusive contracts should be a no-no.

Either that or boxing should be organised more centrally with a body handling rights like the FA...

Noones asking that he spends a fortune on the undercard, or even gives us big name fighters, just evenly matched ones. Isnt that what boxing is supposed to be about?

Its fvcking disgraceful that with 4 days to go he has 1 terrible mismatch and 8 fighters without an opponent. You just know all 8 of those are going to be involved in boring one sided fights.

Why not put Kell Brook in with Mick Jennings? I bet fans would love to see that and it would save finding 2 extra opponents.

Interestingly enough on FW website there is no mention of the Dean Francis/Gbenga fight either. Surely that cannot be off as well, this would then have to be an undercard even worse than the Calzaghe bill and unfortunately an event that is repeating itself time and time again.

Despite the fact I am hugely interested in Khan/Earl, even with Francis on it was bad but if he is off as well its pants

Mario - Jennings I understand injured, and not fit for selection.

The full card is up on boxrec now, no Jennings or Kell Brook. :(

I'm pretty disappointed with this (I should know better by now)

I'm looking forward to seeing Paul Smith though and Dean Francis is always good value - shame they are 'keep busy' type fights.

I hope the main event lives up to the hype otherwise I might as well have stayed at home.

Its a load of rubbish Im glad Im not going now. I know the ITV deal is to show the Khan fights but they could show highlights of the undercards at the end of the fight.
