Canadian Championships results

Post by lap »

An upset-filled tourney this year in British Columbia. Keep in mind those are NOT necessarily the guys who will represent Canada at the Olympic Qualifier. The Box-offs (last week-end of January) are the really important competition :

48 kg : Philip Butler. Walkover. Longtime Ontario champ gets a freebee.

51 kg : Jean Michel Kind. Walkover. Main comp and former champ Ryan Ranelli moved all the way to 57, where he was soundly beaten.

54 kg : Joey Laviolette. Maritimer breaks trough by upsetting incumbent Isho Shiba, then running the table. Compelling Episode II at the Box-offs

57 kg : Arash Usmanee. Already a member of the national team, he is exempted from the box-offs.

60 kg : Ibrahim Kamal. National team representative narrowly escapes Tony Luis' strong challenge. Is exempted from the box-offs as well.

64 kg : Kevin Bizier. Talented Jonathan Bochner REALLY needs to find another weight class. I think he is 0-5 against Bizier, who is also exempted from the Box-offs.

69 kg : Nathyn Kulzyki. In this category, injured Adam Trupish will be Canada's 2008 representative in any and all circumstances, since he already qualified for Beijing. Boxing Canada will not put his spot in jeopardy by forcing him to qualify at the national level.

75 kg : Andrew Gardiner. Young Manitoban has great week-end and benefits from Steve Rolls' upset of imcumbant Francy Ntetu. All 4 participants at the box-offs will have shot at a spot on the national team.

81 kg : Steve Franjic. Ontario boxer the class of a fairly weak field. Imcumbant Glenn Hunter is injured and Jason Douglas has turned pro.

91 kg : Sylvera Jacques-Louis. Little know Louis goes in as third-rank Quebec representative (behind national team's Sébastien Lalumière and conqueror and Quebec Box-offs winner Nikolay Nikolov), but upsets Lalumière in the semis on his way to the title.

Super-heavy : Didier Bence. Easy does it. Is exempted from the box-offs.

Only a few names that I recognize. Upsets have a way of doing that.

Usmanee and Bizier had good showing at Worlds in Chicago. They should join Trupish at the Olympics. Box offs will be interesting. If Hunter is healed he should take the crown from the National Champ. Heavyweight is up in the air, as is middleweight. The experienced guys like Kamal and Bence should also fair well at the Americas Olympic qualifiers. In any case - GOOD LUCK TO ALL CANADIANS.

Heavyweight will come down to Lalumiere and Sylvera Jacques-Louis, the other two fighters from Ontario are less experienced and I would find it very suprising if they beat either of these guys. I really wanted Nikolov to win this year, but he always seems to fall just short.

I expect a similiar situation at middleweight. It will probably come down to Gardiner and Hypolitte. Hypolitte stopped Steve Rolls in the semis and Gardiner spanked Jerome Gabriel 22-4 in the other semi. Rolls and Gabriel also fought each other at Ontario Provincials which Rolls won 22-12.( Ironically the ontario number 1 Stuart Boyd didnt make it to the trials) Gabriel's only 18 though and this was his first senior nationals so look out for him in the future.

And props to Kevin Bizier, stopping all three of his opponents on outclass to win the Championship again and also to Nathan Kulzyki who finally won gold on his 8th attempt (4 silver, 3 bronze before)

I know Usmanee just won a decision in what was apparently a very good fight in Edmonton against Caferro from the US. Or so I heard...I think.

Usmanee and Caferro was a very good bout. West Edmonton Knights Boxing Club - Main Event. The two Ringside winners at 125 lbs. November 17th between the Worlds and Canadian Nationals - good timing for a competition of this caliber. Usmanee was sharp at the Nationals.

As promised, a full post-mortem of the Canadian box-offs (I’m sure you all could barely stand to wait any longer ;))

For easier understanding, the names in bold will be Canada’s national team member.

48 kg
Canadian champ: Philip Butler
Box-offs performance: Wins without opposition

51 kg
Canadian champ: Jean-Michel Kind
Box-offs performance: Wins without opposition

54 kg
Canadian champ: Joey Laviolette
Box-offs performance: Eliminated by Isho Shiba, who is actually keeping his national team spot. Shiba had to get two wins over Laviolette.

57 kg
Canadian champ: Arash Usmanee
Box-offs performance: Exempted

60 kg
Canadian champ: Ibrahim Kamal
Box-offs performance: Exempted

64 kg
Canadian champ: Kevin Bizier
Box-offs performance: Exempted

69 kg
Canadian champ: Nathyn Kulzyki
Box-offs performance: Winner. Actually will not be representing Canada, at least not in Olympic Games-related competition, since Adam Trupish already qualified at the weight. Trupish was hurt at the national championship and did not make the weight at the box-offs (one would guess on purpose).

75 kg
Canadian champ: Andrew Gardiner
Box-offs performance: Eliminated in the first round by Francy Ntetu, who is actually keeping his national team spot.

81 kg
Canadian champ: Steve Franjic
Box-offs performance: Winner.

91 kg
Canadian champ: Sylvera Jacques-Louis
Box-offs performance: Winner.

91+ kg
Canadian champ: Didier Bence
Box-offs performance: Exempted.

Francy Ntetu is the boy Ferando boxed twice when he went to Canada last year, a big tough kid. I don't why I just expected that the Canadian Tean would be a bunch of lumberjack looking guys from the Gateneu.

So much for stereotypes. When I went to England I expected to see a full team of pal English accented boys that tended to box straight up and bounce around on their toes,,,and when I got there,,,well that's what saw.
