Who is a better boxer - CALZAGHE or HATTON?

Post by xarjia »

Hi. Do you think Calzaghe is better than Hatton?

Just seen this list of top ten british boxers. Calzaghe is no. 1 and Hatton is no.2.

have a look at the list.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... 525286.ece

i would have put it the other way round. what do you think?

Bollox populist list but what do you expect from the Sun!

They are bigging up Joe cos he works for there collomist and Hatton cos he is current. Lennox Lewis held real titles and made very few soft dedences.

On ability Calzaghe is better than hatton as he showed he could beat fighters even without his power post hand problems without power Hatton wouldn't have much, he also didn't show much adaptability vs Colotzo.

LL is head and shoulders above both combined.

If Hatton beats Mayweather, he may get close to LL.

Achievement wise Lewis Is higher than both.

Hatton won't get near just with one fresh win.

Indeed Lennox Lewis was one of the top fighters in a strong HW devision for 10 years and didn't take any where near the number of soft fights Calzaghe did for example. Think about it Tua and Andrew Golota were the ones seen as light (and Rahman aswell but lets not talk about that one ;)) I think the Sun are getting over excited by thoses '0s'

Without getting into arguements about the positions of the top 10 best fighters and just giving an opinion on Hatton and Calzaghe, I have to give Joe the advantage - He is the better boxer/fighter without a doubt - His ability to adapt not only to the opposition but during the fight as well makes him the top man of the two IMO - Ricky is a fighter but his relentless style and superb fitness have seen him win 43 times, 44 on Saturday - While Ricky doesnt surprise you with different approaches to a fight, he is just so exciting as he goes for broke from the first bell trying to nail his opponent asap - Two legends of the fight game without a doubt - Some of the positions of other fighters do look a little wrong to me but discussing just two is enough for now.

I don't think it's that bad, the top anyway.. I'd say Calzaghe should be higher then Lewis, maybe not Hatton.. but if he beats Mayweather he will be.

Beating Mayweather will top anything Lewis did, and Lewis lost to 2 poor fighters along the way.

Better boxer -- Calzaghe. Better fighter -- draw. Better champion -- Hatton.

Almost spot on. Hatton's reign has been briefer but more demanding, but Calzgahe has done something over the long stretch.

In terms of boxing skill and adaptability you have to say Calzaghe. Both chins are proven, but I think Calzaghe is the better finisher and also no matter what, goes for it in the final round.

Pound for Pound I think Hattton would struggle with Calzaghe's akwardness, southpaw stance, speed and endurance.

Calzaghe looked amazing against Lacy but take that away and there are no more outstanding boxing displays..

Personally i think Hatton was out of this world against Tackie and Urango considering his squat limbs, and against Oliveira the performance was crisp-perfect every shot in the book coming off with split-second timing and landing.. Kostya Tszyu was a boxing master while Kabary Salem was not.. Hatton maybe nicks it for me, the way he torqued his body into the bodyshots against Castillo was just awesome imo..

As for the list, Calzaghe and Hatton are still active ffs.. what if Froch and Witter ko them..? They wouldn't be top 10 then..

Personally i'd have Lennox and Benn 1 and 2, with Ken Buchanan not far behind..

Calzaghe being top is just ridiculous to me, considered he hasnt fought anyone.. where are the Tszyu's, Collazo's and Castillo's..? Or the DeWitt's, Barkley's and McClennan's..?

He lost to Robin Reid, he was knocked down by Byron Mitchell and Kabary Salem, he's fought once or twice a year for 11 yrs.. it just doesn't add up to me, sorry.. if your going to lose and be knocked down, atleast lose and be knocked down to someone abit handy like a Watson or a Eubank..

I happen to think Calzaghe by some distance, but would we all agree that if Hatton beats Mayweather, that makes him the best British fighter EVER?

Well, i don't really know, because i don't think Mayweather is at his best.. we all saw him struggling for his life in the Judah and De Le Hoya fights, and he hasn't been at his best since Gatti.. stylistically Hatton is his worst nightmare.. but i reckon Cotto eats Ricky alive personally..

Of the two I'd say Calzaghe for the moment (and he didn't lose to Reid, though it was very close). However, I agree that Lewis and Benn have arguments to be considered at the same level, as does Ken Buchanan in my opinion. Not sure McGuigan should be there tho...

Lewis was the Olympic champion and undisputed Heavyweight champion for 4 years.

He beat Holyfield and Tyson, forget how old they were, that was their fault not his.

And Bowe in the Olympics, beat every man he ever fought.

I still rank him above Calzaghe.

Is Kessler of greater standing than say Holyfield, or heck, even Golota when he fought him, given he'd just battered Bowe in two fights.

Is Lacy a greater fighter than say Mercer or Ruddock when he fought them, or more dangerous than Bruno or Tua.

For Eubank, I'll raise you Holyfield, for Woodhall, I'll raise you Ruddock, for Lacy I'll raise you Briggs, for Kessler I'll call you with Kltischko, for Brewer I'll raise you Mercer, for Mitchell I'll raise you Tua.

I still rate Lewis the top man. Hatton gets closer if he topples Mayweather.

But Honeyghan has some impressive wins alongside Curry too.

I would say if Ricky beats Mayweather he is our greatest ever fighter - That was the position I had Ken Buchanan in until recently when I thought Calzaghe had done enough to be top - Its all personal opinion but thats the way I have it having followed boxing since the fifties - We are currently witnessing an abundance of great fights, two of those involving our British ATGs Hatton and Calzaghe what a fabulous time its been - Lets hope 2008 has some great bouts too but surely it will be a long time before we see anything to match this wonderful period of time with hopefully the icing on the cake this comming Saturday.

He means in Calzaghes record...

Hatton is the greatest European ever, or at least post war(always hate comparing with the olden days)

Calzaghe has spent the last 10 years fighting nobodies...actually scratch that, Mr Nicholas put it well enough!

Lewis never fought a great in their prime and for the most part fought them when they were shot! Thats not his fault but has tpo be judged accordingly, he suffers in the same way Marciano suffers in such debates...

Ricky has beaten Two hall of fame entrants and is fighting the King of Boxing on Saturday night, to me, even though his reign has been shorter than Calzaghes its been more explosive

Lennox Lewis isn't in my top five.

Frank Bruno was out-jabbing and out-boxing him, Ray Mercer beat him clearly, and Holyfield and Tyson were eight and 15 years past their bests. Plus he was sparked by McCall and Rahman, sparring partner type journeymen.

Chris Eubank would be in my top five if we're talking post-war, even if for the posing in Germany alone! :D No but seriously, the first Benn and second Watson fights were Epics, he showed the activeness of a 30's fighter and that win over Rocchigiani was a great win.

Calzaghe is ahead at this very moment in terms of achievement - but I think Hatton will surpass him, even if he has too wait beyond the 8th.

In terms of better boxer (and I include fighter in that phrase also).. then for me its Hatton. I just love the way he moves from body to head, love his punch technique and subtle head movements and footwork.
