Body punching - McGuigan or Hatton?

Post by KOJOE90 »

I've just been watching a tape of some Barry McGuigan fights against Nati, Equia, Orozco, Ruan and Gallouse (thanks Red Dragon) this was the first time I've watched these fights since they were originaly aired.

Over the last few years I've read and heard mostly on SKY TV but in many other places that Ricky Hatton is the best British body puncher since Barry McGuigan. Having had my memory refreshed with the above mentioned tape I now think Hatton is definately a better body puncher than McGuigan was, Hatton works the body more and I feel is more accurate with his shots as well, a lot of Barrys seemed to 'stray a bit low'. This then made me think has there EVER been a better British body puncher than Ricky Hatton?

What do you fights fans think?

McGuigan beat a man who had made 19 defences of his WBA featherweight title, Eusebio Pedroza, to secure that genuine world title in 1985.
Hatton, until he also wins a genuine world title, can't be compared to McGuigan in my estimation.
McGuigan's body punching took him to the top of the greasy pole. Hatton's body punching has taken him to a WBU title! Let Hatton win a genuine world title before we start comparing him to those who have.
So to cite Hatton as the greatest body puncher this country has ever produced is over the top. Tommy Farr, Randy Turpin, Colin Jones and even Charlie Magri were brutal body punchers who also achieved more than Hatton has to date.

Yeah you can't really compare Hatton to the guys bennie mentions until he a least fights for a World Title, which he hasn't come close to doing so far, no matter what Sky and SN try to tell us.

That said, Hatton did genuinely step up the competition in 2003, at least for two fights, and he certainly looked the part.

He's no longer ranked by the WBO, so it might have to be the WBC route in 2004. He's as ready as he'll ever be...

True. I hope Hatton doesn't go the WBO route now. He's better than that.

Hmmm I find it unlikely that Hatton will go the WBC route, seeing as Warren seems determined not to work with them again.

WOOOW hang on guys don't lynch me just yet!!! :o

Maybe I could have worded myself slightly better I shall try again, I am fully aware that McGuigan and many other fighters Bennie mentioned have to this point in time achieved more than Hatton has. I've watched and read about many of their fights as we all have, and admire them all a quaility fighters. I was not trying to dismiss other fighter I don't do that, check my previous posts.

The angle I was trying to come from was simply from body punching technique/ability. Maybe I should have started and finished my thread with "How do you rate Hattons body punching against other top British body punchers of the past?" I simply used the McGuigan comparison, because as I said others have done this and I've Ive just watched a McGuigan tape (well last week anyway) so he was fresh in my mind.

Like I said I'm not trying to compare achivements as such just body punching abillity/ technique. McGuigans very impressive ring achievements were not soley due to his body attacks and neither are/will be Hattons, I was just trying to isolate one aspect of their fighting make up.

I hope that cleared up any missunderstanding.

So who would you fight fans put in "The British Body Shots Hall Of Fame"?

Can't fault either's technique at all really, I like it when you can see a body puncher is aiming for the target. Hatton does this, he also dips with his knees and with his hips and lets them go. He's very accurate.

Mike Tyson was a very underated body puncher, Hatton technique is reminiscent of his and I personally do like it. So on technique alone to the body I just sway towards Hatton.

However, I do believe that there were other aspects of Barry's game that Hatton can still learning from most notably the lateral "wisha wipa" movement that Barry used to get inside. Barry was very effective at making the guy miss. There are only two British fighters I can recall who had mastered this. These were Paul Ingle and Spencer Oliver. Both went on to geniune world class and both would have been celebrated today if it wasn't for near tragic in ring loses.

Mcguigan was a much better, and more heavy-handed bodypuncher than hatton. Its interesting you mention clyde ruan as he would be on the same level of ability to eamonn magee; a figter hatton not only failed to stop, but should have been beaten by. Mcguigan was 24 when he won a world title, while hatton is now 25 and hasnt made the leap yet. Hatton is unable to stop a world class opponent and you think hes a better body puncher to mcguigan?

Barry was definately born in 1961 - not sure of the exact date. But I'm 100% sure it was 1961. He wrote an article on skysports.com celebrating his 40th in 2001.

Interestingly, Hatton threw far less body shots against Tackie than head shots, and I think his reliance on body punching may wane as he enters true world class.

Thus far, Hatton has relied far more exclusively on body shots than Barry ever did, and is in fact the better puncher of the two.

The reason McGuigan was able to stop top class opponents wasn't that his body punching was superior, it was because he made his opponents miss more often, and had a better all-round offence.

Hatton is good at stopping his opponents mounting much of an offence thus far, but against shrewd defensive fighters, his body-hunting style has been far too predictable. This is why he took so long to stop Rios, Rios had obviously watched Hatton's attack style before, and so blocked most of Hatton's work.

While I agree McGuigen deserves far more respect as a great body puncher than Hatton ( at the moment ) I think it's bizarre to compare Magee to Ruan to make your case - Magee is much more durable than Ruan ever was.
I think I remember Ruan won his chance at McGuigan by being knocked out just before the bell to end his 12 round eliminator, but the bell rang before the ref completed the ten count, so he won on points.
Then Barry finished the job in fine style in his next fight.

I think Hatton is learning to mix up the combo`s to the body and head. Some of the combo`s he was landing on Tackie were just breathtaking.I think the fact thet Hatton is known for his body punching will only help him, as fighters will be weary to neglect the body defence, thus making the head an easier target.

Yeah, Boxrec have got the wrong year. McGuigan was born February 28, 1961.
Boxrec also claim Joe Calzaghe was born February 23, 1973 when it was March 23, 1972. He's actually 31; not 30.

Hatton is a good prospect but comparing him and McGuigan is an insult to Barry, He is a good body puncher but lacks the defencive and offencive talent to be the best at 140 at the moment. He would be better off fighting for the WBO title as Judah has a glass jaw and Tszyu would dominate Hatton if they fought at the moment.

I take your point but like I've already tried to explain further up the thread I was not so much trying to compare their ring accomplishments it's too soon to do that I am fully aware of that.

But like I've already said I was just trying to compare their body punching techniquie/ability alone, I was just trying to analyse that particular part of their respective fighting make up.

Please everyone I am a McGuigan and a Hatton fan I would not want to insult either of them and don't believe I have. Like I have already explain in length on this thread I admited my initial post my have been worded better but I still with respect think some of you has misunderstood me slightly.

Yes, I was guilty of misundertanding you, KOJOE. In terms of technique, there's no doubt Hatton has a beautiful left hook to the body. I love the way he makes room for the shot in close by jumping to the side like his idol, Roberto Duran.
McGuigan also had great technique. His left hook to the head then down to the body immediately, was a move emulated by so many fighters after him, notably Paul Hodkinson and, dare I say it, by Julio Cesar Chavez!
Life is the best left-hooker you ever saw.
