Why Diego?

Post by bigynzing »

Can anyone answer me why Diego Corrales keep`s fighting at wieghts that are no good for him...he looked so frail against Casamayor, and im convinced it was down to making wieght....IMO he should move to Light-welter at the least. It cant be doing him any favours fighting Quick moving hitters like Casamayor and Prettyboy Floyd when you feel drained.

I think he figures he has better punchpower at that weight, which he probably does, he's so much taller and has such long arms that he develops tremendous power. Cassamayor has a good chin, and he got dropped by Corrales.

However, his punch resistance is shit as a result of having to pare his body down to make the weight. I don't think he holds a shot too well in any case, so it's only exacerbating the problem.

Corrales blamed weightmaking for his disastrous loss to Mayweather, then served time in a big house, comes out, and he's back fighting at super-feather! I agree with bigynzing. It's a strange one.

Why do you say that?

Cassmayor hurt Corrales way more times than the reverse, and was getting up pretty well from the knockdowns.

There was nothing to suggest to me that either man was really ready to be finished yet.

I think that Corrales is risking his health fighting at super feather, he should be fighting at Jr Welter with his frame, he'd be so much stronger at that weight, but then he would probably still be chinny due to facing much harder punchers.

Corrales had to trian like a demon to get down for his last fight, over a long period of time, and that isn't good for the body.

The way i saw it, the only time when Corrales was in the fight, was when Casamayor stopped boxing and tried going toe to toe with the bigger puncher.

Before that corrales was staggering about like a drunk on a saturday night.

In a rematch, Corrales would be stopped again.

Its amazing what a nutritionalist can do. All I'm going to say is that he knows his body better than anyone - he had the perfect opportunity to move up and kick start his career (and because it there was the "weight drained" angle, he could still be taken very seriously). He hasn't chosen to and made the weight very confortably (and in warm up fights), this shows to me that he wasn't preparing himself properly in his "first career. "

The jail term probably matured him and he's knuckled down to training and to working with a nutritionalist. I just think he's chinny, nothing to do with any weight problems - most rangey big punchers are.

I agree with The_Power, only when Casamayor got macho and traded did he look in trouble, when he Boxed and moved Corrales looked lost as usual. I thought after the Mayweather loss and his frequent brushes with the law that he was going to straighten himself out, move up to at least Lightweight and invest in better sparring partners than his wife. But after beating Roque Cassiani he moved back to SF and looked like a skeleton against Casamayor. I never really rated him anyway and he has no future at the weight even if he does maintain good punch power, it's no good if he can't move around the ring or hold a decent shot. Imagine him against Freitas?

Mayweather and Casamayor arnt even massive one shot punchers(ie.Frietas,Naz). Had Diego been floored before the Floyd fight? because in the Casa/Floyd fights it wasnt as if he was "gone" when he got floored, so im not sure about him bieng "chinny". Im still convinced he`s fighting at the wrong wieght.....but i guess the only person who really knows what the score is, is Mr Corrales.

I think he has to push himself too hard to make weight, he came in UNDER the limit in his last fight as I recall, which for a guy with a frame like his is ridiculous, Cassamayor is hardly built, is 4 inches shorter, and was a pound and a half heavier!

I can understand how a fighter might have concerns about moving up through the weights - after all if he's been hit, hurt and KOd at S/Feather whats going to happen when he moves up - he gets hit harder by bigger guys - logically he'd want to stay where he was!

Yeah but Diego has gone DOWN the weights by half a division, which when
you're a 6'0 lightweight seems madness to me.
