Worst Ever Advice on Scoring a Fight on SO.com

Post by Carbo »

Oh dear. Oh dear, Flip Homansky. What a load of bollocks he writes on secondsout.com on how to score a fight.
Flip says:

"5] Defense doesn't score points - period.
Defense sets up offense, it protects you from scoring blows, and it makes your momma happy. I have heard the story of Willie Pep winning a round without throwing a punch. HUH?? You can dance, run, move your head, and juke till the sun comes up....but you can't win a round if you land no punches. If no fighter connects with a punch in 3 minutes, the fans should all receive a free beer"
WRONG! If you are so gifted you can spend an entire round making your opponent miss and look foolish, as Pepp allegedly did, you win the round. Surely, if the opponent doesn't land a single blow, and you've done exactly as you wished, making him do what you want him to do, that's 10-9 to you.
Flip says:

"6] Ring Generalship counts in war. If it counted in the boxing ring, then Patton would still have the belt."
WRONG! A piss poor joke and an even worse point. Who 'controlled the round'? Who dictated the pace? Who got the opponent to do what he wanted him to do? This is ring generalship and it counts. It can be a great decider when both fighters land similar numbers of scoring punches. Yes, they both landed, but who dictated the way the round was fought? Who would I rather be after that round??

Homansky's sloppily written, inaccurate article on scoring can be read in full by following the link below.

According to the BBB of C, (rule 3.31) the rules on how to score are as follows,

3.31 Points will be awarded:-

For “attack” – direct clean hits with the knuckle part of the glove of either hand to any part of the front or side of the head or body above the belt.

The “belt” is defined as an imaginary line drawn across the body from the top of the hip bones.

For “defence” – guarding, slipping, ducking or getting away from an attack. Where contestants are otherwise equal the majority of points will be given to the one who does most leading off or displays the better style.

So yes carbo, you are right, he is incorrect.
