Yes, there is talk...

Boxrec has heard almost unbelievable whispers that Miguel Cotto is being considered as Ricky Hatton's next opponent at the MEN Arena in Manchester this spring.

It would be an unbelieveable make or break night for both men, are they ready for one another? Who cares, let's get it on! It won't happen though i wouldn't have thought

No, it doesn't make sense. This rumour was posted in the London Evening Standard, which is also reporting that Lennox Lewis intends to sign up as a professional wrestler. Say no more, really.

Cotto's people wouldn't make such a hasty move just yet. I think he's ready personally, but it doesn't make BUSINESS sense yet.

I'd fancy Cotto too, Hatton is 100% made for him.

If it is a realistic possibility then I think it will come off, both are hungry young fighters not scared of anyone and wanting to prove themselves. Hatton is much better than anyone Cotto has fought and it will be a test of Cotto more than anything. Can he come through it, I hope not but it is likely, we will have to wait and see if this rumour has any truth to it.

We saw with Alex Arthur that if you dont know how to handle a decent pressure fighter your shafted, i dont see any decent pressure fighters in Cotto`s record....the hottest prospect in boxing(imo) would get a nasty, nasty shock.

Carlos Maussa was supposed to be a pressure fighter and look what happened to him.

Trust me when I say Hatton would lose.

How is Hatton made for Cotto?

Tailor made. :D
Hatton is wide open, telegraphs his punches & cuts easy.
Cotto has more speed, power, better technique on offense & defense.

Hatton (Or should I say, Warren) is obviously very afraid of Witter.

Hatton is much better than anyone Cotto has fought and it will be a test of Cotto more than anything.

Cotto is much better than anyone Hatton has fought.
Cotto has already faced 2nd level opposition in 1/3 of his 18 wins. 8)
Hatton didn’t even step up to 2nd level till his 21st bout.

Can he come through it, I hope not but it is likely, we will have to wait and see if this rumour has any truth to it.

Warren will NEVER let his fight happen.
Besides it’s time for BOTH to step up to top level.

The only one who would get a nasty shock would be U.
Cesar Bazan is a decent pressure fighter and as good as or better than anyone Hatton has faced.
Cotto is a whole other step above Alex Arthur talent wise.

Exactly.

Unlike Arthur, Cotto realises the concept of defense.

No chance this fight will happen before either has a crack at a major title holder. Both have got too much to lose.

I'd love it to happen, and I think its a natural but not untill one or both is a champion.

He's a come forward fighter and Cotto is a fantastic counter puncher. Does it really require an explanation?

Before we all get carried away with Cotto let's see how he handles the big fight pressures, he may have the skills but has he got the temperament? He hasn't fought anyone remotely at Hatton's level yet so i think he should continue his steady progress to the top.

Yes Hatton/Cotto will happen this summer, with Mickey Vann refereeing, wearing nothing but flip-flops and a thong.

I have nothing to add to this, but thought I'd post to say I have nothing to add to this as sometimes you just have to do.

So therefore with nothing added I'll leave it alone.

Hatton-Cotto during 2004? No chance.

Cotto hasn't fought anyone yet in my opinion - just a bunch of old men. Okay, he's done the business up to now, but let's wait and see till someone stands up and fights back. As with Alex Arthur prior to his Gomez humbling, many seem to be basing their judgement on what Cotto has the potential to achieve as a fighter, rather than what he has achieved as yet.
Hatton has fought a bunch of old men, too, but his win over Tackie was a good one. Cotto has yet to beat someone as established.

I know, but Victoriano Sosa will be a good test.

No-one can use the "Sosa is a blown up lightweight" argument either, because he is in the prime of his athleticism at 29, has fought at 139-140 before and also, it's no different than anyone else bulking up to move up a weight - as many fighters are doing these days.

Yeah Sosa will be a real test. He's a lightweight, but a big lightweight. Watching him against Floyd he looked a serious puncher to me: real ambition and puts his full weight behind those punches.

Should tell us a lot about the young Puerto Rican sensation.

I disagree with you somewhat, for me - Cesar Bezan showed plenty of ambition against Cotto but was outclassed. The former Lightweight champion was only 31 and perhaps it was more a case of how good Cotto is as opposed to how much Bezan had declined.

Look at Jesse James Leijla, people were saying he was finished after DLH dispatched him easily, okay Bezan wasn't at his natural weight, but I'm sure would give a host of other fighters trouble.

Good call Stu,
Cesar Bazan has been fighting at 140 ever since he lost to Jose Luis Castillo 3 years ago.
He’s only 29 yrs old and at 6’1” he’s a big 140.
Don’t be fooled by his low #32 ranking at BoxRec as his loss to Carlos Gerena was one of the biggest hometown robberies of 2001.
He also had floored Joel Perez and was beating the crap out of him when their fight was declared a tech draw. 8)
Cesar has won at top level which is something Ben Tackie never has accomplished.
When I look at his record, I keep wondering why he hasn’t gotten more top level fights in the last 3 years.
Be carefull, he is what U call a sleeper as Louis Brown found out a few days ago. :-?
