HATTON: WHAT INTELLIGENT PRESSURE?

Post by DIRT SUGAR »

Intelligent pressure my butt.

Why didn't Hatton jab his way in, which was giving him success early on. He was really bad in there tonight and fair play, major part of that was the superb fighter in front of him.

When it started and he started jabbing his way in I thought 'game on', but instead he started ploughing in and just getting tired up and tired out.

Mayweather was brilliant. His conditioning, focus, he just looked like the winner from the moment he stepped out of his dressing room. For all his childish behaviour before the fight, once he's gloved up he's all business. No fornicating about and he just dissected Ricky bit by bit.

Get back down to 140lb Ricky cos you ain't no welterweight

You've just described Floyd's last 8 fights.

Pity the public were never told about this during the build up.

Hatton did well coming in with the jab and let's not forget, won more rds than most Floyd opponents of recent.

But he's not a welter, that was plain enough last night, and ironically while he could beat the great offensive fighter Tszyu he couldn't have a breakthrough vs the great defensive fighter Mayweather.

But it was bloody messy stuff. For some reason Cortez wouldn't allow Hatton inside early, but would let him inside later, when Hatton had lost some steam and when Mayweather could find the room to punch.

Like Billy Graham said, the problem was not cuttig Floyd down, but what to do when in close. That was the big issue, because Floyd's defense just seems impregnable unless you have a long jab or surprise him with fast punches from a southpaw stance.

According to the judge's scorecards he'd won a total of 1,1 and 2 rounds.......

I thought he took at most 4 rounds, in other words he was in it in the first half like Judah was. IMO

EDIT, 3 rounds

with so much time to prepare ricky coming in at 145lbs was a disappointment. i had said he would be bang on the money weightwise for this one but i was wrong. too tense to work effectively and cleverly, no real concerted efforts to floyds body, having to cope with a referee that allowed mayweather to work to his advantages but stopped ricky's master plan in its tracks until lack of gas began to tell...and then theres mayweather - a genius of defensive boxing and equipped with lightning fists. the thing with mayweather is he is completely at one with all the weapons in his gunnery. he hits just hard enough, his instincts are always correct, spoils effectively. even if the things i listed earlier were not so, ricky still would not have beaten him.

The chances were it was always going to be this way, the people who were convinced Hatton would win were thinking with the hearts and not there heads as I said before the fight. Hatton's only chance was to fight the best fight of his life, but he fought like s**t.

The worst thing he did and has done for a few years now is fall into his opponents and smother his own work. He didn't do s**t on the inside, because he kept taking one step to many and walking into clinches with Floyd. I think he does this, because he's worried about getting nailed. He's tries to smother his opponents, but ruins his own work just as much.

Looking at Mayweathers last two fights though, I feel he is there to be beaten by someone with a good workrate who is not going to a. Try to wrestle him and b. Fade down the stretch. Cotto or Paul Williams would give have a real god shot at beating him in my view.

He's not a pound for pounder either. He got KZ at exactly the right time. He's definitely vastly overrated, due to his army of fans believing the hype.

Joe Calzaghe is far superior to Hatton....look at their faces for one...

Mayweather was his usual class, and in my opinion won the fight with ease, i had him winning every round aprt from 3. True class act & the fight finished like i predicted. Although i wanted Hatton to win, i thought technically PBF would be too good, that is how the fight ended up. Unlucky Ricky, but Floyd is a different class!!!!!!!!!!!!

I gave Ricky a good chance because I thought he would change his game from the usual walk forward without the jab, wrestle,

Ricky had to jab his way in behind a tight guard, using head movement and work the body when in mid range.

Instead he had no jab, little head movement, smoothering his own work with wrestling and tried to wrestle and maul, which he was never going to get away with.

Ricky did have success in rounds 5 and 6 when Floyd was resting and not liking the pace and I thought he may have changed the tide until Floyd adjusted and turned it on.

I always thought that Rickys style would be made for Mayweather really, I dont think he ever would have beaten him but I do think that he is not the fighter he was, where was the bounce in his legs of a few years ago?... why didnt he throw more clusters of punches and try and smother Mayweather with the sheer volume of his punches... I really think the Hatton of 2 years ago would have done better, not won but probably have gone the distance. I think the constant weight making and his fighting style has taken a toll and when he needed to step it up yesterday there was nothing there...

I remember thinking the same thing. Hatton's new style of mauling & punching is less suitable for a boxer like Floyd than his old style of constantly bouncing in & out of range and throwing punches in clusters from different angles.

I was always confident of a Mayweather win but Graham seemed so confident that they had particular tatics to win that i was ingtrigued that there might possibly be some Schmelling Louis I situation. Ricky just seemed to do what he has done pretty much in every fight since Tsyzu but with more intensity.

I watched it live so i haven't heard the commentary but was Hatton simply not trying or able to follow instructions?

I think basically Hatton kept holding because Mayweathers counters were hurting/stinging him. When he did stand off a bit and try the body shots and inside work Mayweather was blocking it all. Hatton said himself that he didnt realise how good an infighter Mayweather was.
I think the biggest mistake Hattons team made was thinking that Mayweather couldnt hurt him...

Mayweather was too good. But I think Cotto could do him. And possibly Williams as well

Cotto would be a good fight but Mayweather would be too fast for him as well, same with Williams. I cant see anyone around capable of beating Mayweather at the moment, he's the best out there by some way....

I'd love to see if Cotto could do it, his powerful punches on Mayweathers arms & body and newly revealed improved footwork give him the best chance to beat Floyd of anyone imo.

Williams would get clipped from the outside like Corrales did and Floyd would shut up shop inside like last night.

Floyd Sr recently said you'd need a great jab to beat Floyd. If only we still had the version of Vernon Forrest that beat Mosley here today...

I thought Ricky did all he could. He smothered his own work inside but then Ricky always does this. At least Ricky was willing to put it on the line. Many of Floyds recent opponents backed off and fought defensively once they realised they wouldn't win. Ricky kept coming to the end. This was the only way Ricky could have fought.

Ok now tell me a guy like Margarito wouldn't be a huge threat to Floyd after seeing this. Margarito a huge, rangy, hard hitting welterweight with a granite chin that doesn't stop coming foward.

one day people will realise that fighters like forrest, mosley, DLH, cotto, williams et al are at least a rung below mayweather on the ladder of talent. give him credit, gentlemen, please.

See this is the kind of bs that turns makes me hate Floyd and his fans. These guys would all be huge challenges to Floyd yet people just come out and dismiss them like they don't belong in the same ring as Floyd. Based on exactly feck all.

forrest is past his best and even his best wasnt earth shattering.
i once thought shane would beat floyd but those days are over too.
oscar showed how to possibly beat floyd but didnt have the tools himself.
cotto has strength, youth, power but isnt smart enough to beat mayweather who throws punches when you think he shouldnt with just enough venom to make you think twice about taking another one. i question cottos balance too. it would make a very watchable fight but only one winner i'm afraid. i'm no floyd nuthugger i resisted calling him great but now after the manner of this victory i have to accept that he is head and shoulders above the present competition.
