hatton vs mayweather - how i saw it

Post by boxerbob »

first of all floyd mayweather has shown us all that he is the best fighter of this decade and rightfully no1 pound for pound in the world.

hatton was brave but he just hasnt got the size to compete at 147 , i thought that the fight was close after 6 rounds but mayweather pulled away after seven and the delivered that hook that basically ended the fight.

the referee cortez was a joke , he knew how hatton fights , damn he let hatton/castillo punch out of thier clinch every time in the summer , but last night he broke up the clinch as soon as he could - this hurt hatton but the result would have been the same...i just think cortez needs to take a good look at himself.

the future???......mayweather has nothing to prove , cotto is the only fighter left that stands a small chance of beating floyd......hatton???....if he fights again it should be at 140lbs but then again he has already proved he is the best at this weight so why go over ground you have already covered????...i do believe though that fighting again at 147 will leave hatton with the same result as last night , (if its de la hoya or cotto) the 2 big money fights at that weight.

floyd you are rightfully a legend of your time , i picked hatton on points but you were very clever inside and out , your speed , movement and defence was amazing...you are indeed some fighter

at the time of the stoppage i had mayweather ahead by 3 points...87-84 or 5-3-1 in rounds.....when hatton got the point deduction i scored the round 9-9 as i though hatton won that round.

ps: ricky well done , you just never fought a champion last night , you fought a legend , im sure if you do come back at 140 you will again be world champion , hopefully you can have your last fight at the man city stadium sometime in the future so that we can all pay respect to a fine champion.

personally i think we saw the best of ricky hatton against kostya. since then his performances have not been impressive apart from the first few rounds v urango and a decent body shot v's a past sell by date castillo.

the days of ricky moving to left and right and pounding decent fighters to the ribs on the inside seem to have disappeared, they were the only tactics he could have possibly used to beat pbf and he did not even try to use them. a few times he had floyd in the corner and all he did was hook to the head.....or try to. look again at the video of hatton v rowlands or some other fights around that time (tony pep etc).... that is ricky at his best. the ricky of today does not do these things anymore, he comes in and goes out in straight lines and that makes him sooooo easy to hit, its a basic boxing skill......move the bloody head !!!!

i did not get caught up in the hatton hype for this one, i think we forgot how superb, in fact devastating, that mayweather can be. he certainly has the fists to match his gob !!

ive always said that the witter style would dispatch hatton, im even more convinced now. witter hits very very hard (harder than pbf) and his uppercuts would tear ricky a new arsehole.

ricky is a lovely guy, a great ambassador for the sport. but the best he can do now is fight witter for the british public or 'hang em up' !! .... he is a spent force, big time.

the experiments at 147 have been found wanting with hatton twice now, surely his team will now get the message. hatton, if he continues should stick to 140.

and where was dennis hobson last night.... i could not see him anywhere !!

i think its a shame, it certainly looks like ricky has been chasing the dollars, dennis was good to ricky and the big money promotions lined hattons pockets and not hobsons, im led to believe that waterman walked partly because of hobsons non business like dealings with hatton...

is that correct spud ?

I'd tend to agree that welterweight is just too much for Hatton. Collazo ran him very, very close... which should have been a warning for Hatton to stay where he's at his best. Still, can't blame him for taking the money to fight Mayweather.

Wrong Rhino - by the way you do not have a clue mate and best advice is do not go there - I know you are a highly intelligent and sensible chap :TU:

I know a lot of what has gone on in recent months - but I am told that doesn't even scratch the surface.

I was party to a conversation in Vegas in June which absolutely upset me beyond belief and I will never forgive or forget the personalities who were present - those that need to know, are well aware of what I am on about.

It is so unfortunate that in life when you get involved in something that upsets you, you can in normal circumstances say your piece and have a right to say what in your opinion has gone on - in boxing if you do you are served with a writ and unless you have a lot of money to fight your corner you are f*cked!!!

Enough said.

Fair enough mate - keep forgetting you are not a mate

Here's something for you and others to say "B*llocks" to - I felt that strongly about what has gone on behind the scenes - even if Dennis was co-promoting or remotely involved in Hatton/Mayweather I would not have gone or been part of the team - and no that not because I was sacked or anything remotely like that.

Dennis Hobson is a character who I like a lot - I felt for him last night after all the b*llocks which went on after Hatton left his last promoter - Dennis did a lot of work behind the scenes leading to a big/massive fight - some may say co promoting 2 shows in Vegas is achievement in itself but just when the money could have been made - Hatton was then promoted by Golden Boy.

I honestly believe Dennis Hobson deserved to be treated better than what he has been - who by thats for you Rhino to make up as you normally do mate!!! - there I go again using the mate word.

it would have been nice to see hobson retained.

but he got 3 fights with hatton.

it was hardly a dump and run job.

plus 2 vegas fights.

including a big one against castillo which packed out a major arena.

Chasing the $ bill. Is that all that some of you can come up with. What a load of old cynical bollox. Hatton imposed exactly the type fight that he needed to be in but just was not good enough for PBF. The build up should tell you that he was more than up for the fight and had the self belief to deliver - but was just outclassed at his own game.

Hatton got himself in the fight that he needed to be in but Mayweather outclassed him on the inside (holding, manouvring his body and arms - nullifying the work that Hatton himself may have expected to have to proved successful) so that any plans of making that type of fight effective didn't work. Hatton expended much energy whilst Mayweather stayed loose and caught Hatton with the more significant punches. There are subtle things that can happen within a boxing ring (especially at this level) and the dynamic of a fight can prove elusive for anyone trying to analyse it in simplistic terms.

BTW I too think that Hatton is a one weight type of fighter - and an fantastic one at that.

Hatton's skills and defence were the problem, not moving up to Welterweight.

I think I have to agree. Hatton hasn't looked the same since.

He had a lot of fights to get to the very top - beating Tszyu, and his style was never going to be condusive to longevity. Add inactivity and yo-yoing in weight to the equation and I think it's possibly he peaked in 2005.

And he looks a lot less nimble these days. All the weights he's lifting are no doubt improving his strength but has he lost the ability to step to the side and create angles like he used to? He hasn't shown that since the Tszyu fight.

Hatton is still the top man at 140 no doubt. 2005 would perhaps have been his best chance against Mayweather but I still don't think he'd have beaten him even then.

Ineffective jab and his "Face first" defense as I said would be his downfalls. He couldn't close effectively enough and was forced to jump in, and he got hit with too many flush shots.

Hatton was doing pretty well slipping Mayweather's shots in the early going...he seemed to get far too careless when he realised he needed to charge after mayweather to get to him, and abandoned whatever vestige of defence he'd managed to maintain up to that point. I think Hatton did extremely well in the early going, but he was never going to win this fight, and it was obvious from about Round 4.

actually i've just had a little think about this post.

hobson didn't have to come in for hatton.

and hatton could have gone with anyone else and made big money.

all this did a lot for him crap.

he was hardly a fighter with nowhere to go was he.

hobson was prepared to put silly money up.

hatton repaid him by retaining him for 3 fights.

he should be lucky ffs. :TU:

i still make favourite against most out there.

i'd tip guys like cotto, williams, de la hoya, mosley, berto to beat him.

but not many others tbh. :TU:

Mayweather's fitness and toughness was brilliant - he looked as fresh as a daisy.

I don't think Hatton is a faded fighter - for 8 rounds he was giving Floyd his second hardest fight of his career and the fight was in the balance.... Just Floyd turned up the gas at the perfect stage... Floyd is THAT good.

The only fighter that will run Floyd closer is DLH again.... Now that he has shown he can take Hatton's pressure WITH EASE - I don't think the stronger, but slower and more lethargic Margarito or Cotto will be a problem.

Yes, its really got to be Witter at 140 lbs next for Hatton - but he will do Witter easily.

I thought that for the first four rounds, Mayweather looked quite uncomfortable with the pace, and he wasn't really getting many shots off, but like in so many other fights, he found his timing, figured out how to counter Hatton, and controlled his own effort perfectly.

I thought the refereeing was abysmal to be honest. Cortez might as well have snogged Mayweather after the fight. Broke the action up far too quickly, whist Hatton was still punching, and despite saying before the fight he wouldn't spoil the fight by deducting points, did precisely that by not penalising hatton after Mayweather turned his back.

Mayweather constantly used the elbow during the fight, yet despite being warned over and over again, never received a point penalty. He must have been warned 10 times.

I doubt the result would have been different, but certainly Cortez was kissing Mayweather's ass big time, and was virtually fellating him post fight, with his arm draped round him. The turtle faced old bastard.

I also cannot understand the scoring, sure, Hatton was behind by the time the end came, but they gave him what, one round? I thought Hatton took the 2nd, 3rd and 4th clearly, Mayweather landed little of note in those rounds, and Hatton was controlling the tempo.

Mayweather, having said all of this showed just what a class fighter he was. Hatton is a very good fighter, but Mayweather is a great one, with a degree of control in the ring I've seldom seen.

I'd really like to see Mayweather fight Cotto, who is the last big challenger to his supremacy for me, I don't know that Mayweather is that excited about that prospect, and having seen how he dealt with Hatton, who is a lot quicker than Cotto, I'm not sure he would have much chance gainst Mayweather either.
