Mundine trys to make more friends...

Post by Marlin »

AUSTRALIA'S most divisive Aboriginal athlete thinks that this country's most beloved Aboriginal athlete has surrendered the ability to speak her mind.

Calling her a "sellout'', boxer Anthony Mundine said Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Cathy Freeman cannot be an authentic indigenous leader so long as she's heavily involved in corporate Australia.

"Aboriginal people don't buy that,'' Mundine said, referencing a leader coming from the mainstream. "That's what happened to Cathy Freeman. She sold out, toeing the line. And that ain't me. I'm not a fake.''

Mundine also said repeated times that men, not women, are more qualified to lead. "As far as being a leader, that's not her anyway,'' he said. "A man can only lead.''

Where Mundine has always been raw, Freeman has always been refined.

While Freeman has spent her post-retirement career rubbing elbows with other celebs and speaking about a possible film career, Mundine has decided that acceptance by the mainstream corresponds with a loss of credibility. Not necessarily by choice, he has no endorsement deals.

"If you want to toe the line,'' Mundine said, "if you want to be some corporate guy and say the right things, do the right things, you might be OK in the media's eye, but it wouldn't be real for me.

"I think Cathy has done a lot for the Aboriginal people, don't get me wrong. But they (mainstream sponsors) control and determine the things she says. I'm not putting anything on her, but at the end of the day, it's got to be a man. She's a leader, but for women,'' Mundine said.

"I'm not knocking Cathy. She inspired me as an athlete. She's inspired me. She is probably the pinnacle Olympian, and we all respect that. But Cathy can't say - 'I don't like this prime minister' or 'I don't like this issue'.

"I want to represent my people properly, and represent the street. I'm going on my own crusade ... and that's why I become the villain.''

Just when i thought he couldnt make a bigger goose of himself, he went and done it.

I think Anthony needs to be told a few things, both common sense.

1. If Kathy becomes an actor, politician, whatever this puts her on a bigger stage to promote her own ideas and i am sure she would have her own ideas on aboriginal welfare etc the same thing mundine harps about, except people would probably listen to what she said.

2. If you wish to follow islam in this country you are more than free to, it is after all an equal land, where everyone should live in harmony. But if you want to spread your sexist muslim bullshit in public you need to fornicate off to saudi arabia or some place like that where u can badmouth and beat women as much as you want.Although until that day Mr Mundine you live in Australia, a country which was settled by christians, remains settled by christians and which laws are based around the christian belief. Thats your holy book which says women are lower than farm animals mate, not ours. Ours says they are equals.

wow! tell us what you really think!

My point is that Anthony is probably pissed off about Cathy moving on from the "I'm a victim" notion of some indigineous aussies. Good on ya Cathy.
And good luck in your upcoming world cough cough title match Anthony. your next fight is like putting the Wodonga Raiders up against Geelong. Sure I'll watch it if it is on free to air, if there's nothing else on, and if I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not tired and if there is nothing on the Radio, and ...

Maybe Mundine is trying to drum a bit of publicity for his next extravaganza this coming Monday. We all know that it has a most piss-weak undercard and is box-office poison.

As Oscar Wilde said: "Whats worse than being talked about - not being talked about"!

Its thing like this that make me dislike him.. it even makes me disregard his status as an athlete.
I think its a crack up when he refers to himself as having grown up in redfern on the block and being a street kid haha..
From what i have been told his time growing up was spent between a plush joint in newtown and living in country nsw with his family, having been scouted by the dragons at 18 meant he went straight from being a spoilt brat to a millionaire footy player.. know wonder the git has no grip on reality

Anthony Mundine, the "genius" who took a contact lens that had been placed over an eye injury after surgery from his eye, put it in his mouth and put it back in his eye.

Cathy must feel she has been insulted by a real mastermind.

I wouldn't take too much notice of it.
They pull the same shit leading up to every fight. It's getting touch boring.

It is a shame really. His father is a total gentleman and people are starting to confuse the two.

Does anybody know what the Aboriginal community thinks of Mundine?

Do they think he speaks for them, or do they disagree with some/many of his views?

From my experiences with aboriginal kids they dont seem to mind all the shit he talks and they see him as a great for the obvious reason that he is an aboriginal and doing well for himself.. I wish he talked less smack because it rubs off on these young blokes and they get even more of a hate on for white ppl.. walking home after dark in a town like griffith nsw is something else, let me tell you

Cathy has at least had the good taste to ignore Bucketmouth. Perhaps we should take her example.

A very contrite Anthony Mundine was on all the news channels yesterday, denying making derogatory comments about Cathy Freeman, describing her as a sister and her 400 metre Gold Medal at the Sydney Olympics as an inspiration.

Was young Anthony "verballed"?

choc said the comments no doubt about it, it was on radio so unless they can copy its voice it must have been him!

he is so hipercritical. look at any fight card and see the sponsors on the ring. is that not "corporate"? it is also known fact that Foxtel sponsor him nand last time I checked foxtel was a "corporation"!

aboriginies all over australai love greeny over choc and it was evident at the green v mundine fight. I think greeny will now have a few more!!

Anthony's father Tony is a cousin of Warren Mundine, a former mayor of a large country town. Warren remembers being at school and some teacher, reading out of an old textbook written by some bigot, saying "Aborigines are of small stature." Warren pointed out to the teacher that his father was close to full blooded and 6'4" tall.

Don't take everything you read seriously.

A lot of Australian Rugby League players over time have been Aboriginal, including heavyweight forwards like Arthur Beetson and Gorden Tallis.
