Khan v Romanov Feb 2

So it looks like Sports Network want Yuri Romanov as Amir Khan's next opponent at the Excel Arena show. At first I wondered if this made sense putting Khan in with a guy who had lost on points to the man Khan had just destroyed in 72 seconds. But Romanov lost to Earl after he was coming off a 15 month lay-off that night and was struggling with ring-rust. Since the Earl fight he has gone on to win the European title and made two successful defences. He has never been stopped, has power in his punches and has a good track record for beating British fighters on their own turf (apart from the Earl result). Also unlike Limond or Earl he won't be suffering from a lack of activity as he fought in a twelve rounder back in October and will be fresh and sharp. I don't think it's a bad match-up at all.

No certaintly that Khan would beat Romanov.

If he does fight him, and wins (2 big ifs), he'll be highly rated for the WBA title. Would be far too early, of course though.

I can't see them taking this one yet. Although Earl did beat Romanov, I think right now Romanov is a huge step up from Earl.

For me it'd be sencible to fight Thaxton first then Romanov, if he gets a world title shot on the back of a European title in his next fight I think it could be desasterouse for his carrer because he has so many flaws. Haven't seen Romanov fight what is his style/chin?

I'd be surprised if it was Romanov, he's a couple of levels above anything Khan has faced so far, i think Romanov lacks motivation at the moment, he seems to have gone through the motions against Stefano Zoff in his last fight.

I'd have preferred to see Khan in with Thaxton, but Romanov is an excellent opponent

would be smart to get Thaxton. Khan appears to big and fast and mobile, for the gutsy Thaxton.

i think khan and thaxton/romanov will be like how haye was with hobson/gurov. in other words, sniffing that euro title with the world ranking that will come with it, and maybe snubbing the domestic opponent

Would still favore thaxton a tough fighter from the southpaw stance who has fought a lot of top people in a 40 fight carrer, that is a true learning fight.

Much though I wouldn't bitch about Romanov which is also an excellent fight. How many more fights does the ITV deal run for?

Expect a world title shot in 4 fights time then! Warren will be able to name a good price for whoever wants that fight with all the free advertising from the ITV shows. I know I sound cynical but it genuinly wouldn't supprise me if thats how he does it.

There showing allot of confidence if they go for Romanov who imo is 1 of the biggest punchers at 135. Thaxton can forget about fighting Khan if Khan beat Romanov who is far better than Thaxton

There's a certain historical aura to this clash, hearing Khan and Romanov in the same sentence :P Judging by some of allegedly's previous matchmaking i'm surprised they didn't dig up Tsar Nicholas Romanov for a WBU shot at Amir.

Agreed - Khan deserves massive respect for fighting Romanov if the fight comes off - okay he lost to Earl but it was mighty close and as someone mentioned he was coming off a 15month lay-off - by the later rounds he was getting his timing back and was rocking Earl frequently. If that fight was a 12 rounder he would have definitely ko'ed Earl in the 11th/12th. I was there in Preston when he knocked down Vanzie times in only his 11th(?) fight. He is a world class operator IMO.

I reckon. He stopped Vanzie, was edged by Earl when out of shape, blew away the very talented Juan Diaz Melero, knocked out Tontchev with a great shot but struggled with Zoff.

Very powerful/accurate but somewhat slow on his feet.
