Booing a loser in any case except a DQ is one of the most disgusting things you can see in this sport.Matt W wrote:I wasn't offended by the booing but find it to be rather pathetic. I thought it was far worse for the Americans to have to see dyed ginger pube head Tom Jones... :P
I was at the Wigan show and what really did wind me up and show a complete lack of class were the 'fans' of Craig Watson that booed Ali Nuumbembe after their fight. Disgusting.

It's fine to say it's not intended to be offensive but what these people who do it and condone it should realise is that it tarnishes the reputation of OUR country. Regardless of what you think of America, Mayweather, etc, if you're proud of being British, then you shouldn't do it, because those louts made Britain look bad to the general American public (and rest of the viewing world).mattym wrote:the people who take this personally are idiots. its all part of the fun of a sporting event, we weren't booing the country (i speak for the majority) we were booing any opposition to Hatton and trying to make it a hostile and rowdy atmosphere like we love it.

Which would be exactly Hopkins' own fault after the Minter-esque comments he made last weekends.verballistic wrote:bernard hopkins is no flag-waving patriot and certainly no coward and the factors above encompass why b-hop says he will never fight outside america again:Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I was cringing at football hooligans booing the national anthem. What no-one has picked up on yet, which I presume it wasn't on TV, is that a Brit on my far right threw a bottle at Floyd when he got up on the ring post.
It missed him, thank God, but managed to land near David Beckham.
I thought this kind of behaviour had gone in the 80s, but obviously not.
Every American I've met here said the same thing; "I hate Mayweather, but I wanted him to fcking kill Hatton after that".
Thankfully there were only a few fights after the Garden Arena emptied. I was worried there'd be a riot.

based on the hooligans in last night's crowd, it would be very easy to envision a replay of the hagler-minter debacle of 1980 had the fight been held in britain!!![]()

the main point seems to be that those who boo think it is a 'bit of fun' and 'banter'.
they totally miss the point that banter is supposed to be a two-way thing.
they are the type of people who would say 'you paki b******' and then if they were pulled up on it say 'it was only a joke'.
it's simple. if they understood what respect meant they wouldnt do it. what a bunch of idiots. why didn't they boo when they were waiting to be processed through USA immigration?

Say what you want about the Daily Mail, but their piece on it today had it down to a tee. As well as pointing out that people such as Sugar Ray Leonard were saying that a line was crossed, the paper's closing statement was that "The English (their words) were outclassed outside the ring as well as in it". Sums it up I think.

Because of course the Scottish are well known for being non-partizan. e.g. the treatment of Michael Gomez when on his way to the ring fighting Alex Arthur…. or even just booing the English kicker at Murrayfield (something that only the French usually stoop to).PompeyScot wrote:Say what you want about the Daily Mail, but their piece on it today had it down to a tee. I spent 4 years living in Wales and have never encountered such overt racism anywhere else – including a friend of mine who was badly beaten up by four uber-tough Welshman while walking home from the shops just because he had his England rugby shirt on (during the six nations). He did or said nothing to them – they just went for him for that reason alone. It was reported to the Police (via the hospital) but they were never caught, and got away with it. About two weeks later I remember watching on S4C news about some Welsh cabbie who got punched by a passenger who (in an English accent) apparently said “you welsh bastard” and thumped him.
It made the news!!! Why?? Because it suits the Celtic agenda to highlight any instances of “racism” against them, but never when they are the perpetrators.
Its not actually anti-English comments that bother me. It’s the fact that if the English did it – it’s crime of the century.
Max Boyce = pretty much made a career out of anti-English (racist) songs, that if he sang about black people or jews he’d be arrested for. As would the Stereophonics.
Anne Robinson = says (something like) “I don’t like the Welsh, they are always so happy with themselves” and pretty is much vilified as being a neo-Nazi.
Go figure………..

I would urge all Americans who were rightly offended to disregard the yobbish morons who were booing.
They were not real boxing fans & I can guarantee that none of them had even heard of Floyd Mayweather before about 2 months ago.
They were just Johnny Come Lately football thugs who jumped on the Hatton bandwagon that started rolling in th UK about 2 weeks ago.
They will probably never go to another boxing match in their lives.
They are NOT representative of true boxing fans & are an embarrassment to Britain (make that England).

Agree with that. The opinion piece was spot-on, and Hayward's coverage was excellent, as usual. Unlike many tabloid boxing writers, he really knows his stuff.PompeyScot wrote:Obvious response, so I repeat again...observer1 wrote:Daily mail is a joke, i cannot believe people actually buy that thing

Re: Brit fans disgrace
The booing of the the American national anthem was very disrespectful. At the time, I said to my Dad the best way to stop all the booing would be for Floyd to put in a top-class performance & that he did.search wrote:Booing the anthem was an absolute disgrace and im sorry that LEGENDS of the sport had to sit through that.
Well, i guess floyd shut them all up in the end
What was an even more disgrace was Tom Jones singing God save the Queen. He looked awful!

I have heard the English national anthem booed by fans of the Argentine, Turkish, Scottish, Welsh and Irish football teams plenty of times before.
Booing any national anthem is cvntish, and totally out of order, but it is'nt just the English "fans" doing it believe me.

They are, in general, pretty helpful and friendly(although they don't get our sense of humour at all, which is a shame)Matt W wrote:In response to an earlier post I agree that when visiting the US the people are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome in their country. We could learn a lot from them.
There are plenty of places I have been though, where the people have been much, much warmer than either the US or Britain.

Nothing. You mentioned Hagler-Minter, and it was Minter's comments which brought out the more, shall we say, "unsavoury" members of society to the fight, leading to the crowd trouble after Hagler won.verballistic wrote:what exactly did hagler do to deserve his beer bottle shower?!?oliverfennell wrote:Which would be exactly Hopkins' own fault after the Minter-esque comments he made last weekends.verballistic wrote: bernard hopkins is no flag-waving patriot and certainly no coward and the factors above encompass why b-hop says he will never fight outside america again:

Now, after Hopkins' racist comments, there would be a good chance the far-right would again turn up in large numbers to support "their boy", which could again lead to trouble if the result didn't go their way.

Hopkins may be the king of the PR stunt.
I think this one could backfire. As the embodiment of the American dream, from the street via prison to redemption and reward as a superstar..only in America...Hopkins could throw away his life-time's work in gaining acceptance if he plays this card throughtout the build up.
Race is far more serious a subject than nationalism, as he used in Tito fight.
It really is a dangerous vehicle to mobilise.

if there is one thing that bores me to death in boxing it is how hopkins brings up his time in prison 20 years ago at every opportunity.DavidPayne wrote:Hopkins may be the king of the PR stunt.
