a squib which ran near the bottom of the sports page in the Calgary Herald in May of 1916 under the title "Another Phenom":
Chicago, May 18 - Barney Lichtenstein, manager of Ad Wolgast, announced yesterday from Salt Lake City, Utah, that he has discovered a new heavyweight phenom named Jack Dempsey. Barney insists that his new hope is almost as fast as his namesake who startled the middleweight world a few years back. He is only 20 years old, weighs 175 pounds and stands over six feet in his stockings.
Geez. Wonder if he ever amounted to anything? :)
