Mick had 2 options to get Froch Vs Kessler on TV:

1) Give the fight to Sky for a small fee, so they can show it live (i.e. not on SBO)
2) Sell the fight to primetime as a PPV fight and earn a set amount for each sale

Mick must have come to the (correct) conclusion that he can generate more money for him and his fighter by going down the primetime route (good promoting IMO). It's unfortunate that Virgin and Primetime can't sort their poop out, but such is life!
I agree that's its a ridiculous idea to give Sky the fight for free, I mean the guy is in it like anyone else, to make money. But perhaps making less money this time round and going for Sky might be a better investment for the long term? I know a lot more people would see the fight if it was on Sky as opposed to Primetime.

How about giving it to the BBC for free?

It's pointless giving the fight to anyone for free, obsurd in fact. There will be no benefit in the long run, because it won't change any broadcasters overall view of boxing. Hennessy would be an absolute mug to give the fight away. With that being said, I don't think he's done a great job with his big fighters overall. He goes down the right route with them, but he takes forever to get them where they need to be.

Chambers,
I wasn't saying hand it over for free mate.
Of course, no one would do that.
What I was trying to say is if a Promotor had a date agreed with Sky, at an agreed fee, maybe it would have been worthwhile trying to do a deal on a sub contract basis ?
Maybe I'm talking bollocks and fully accept what you say about the Promotor's role on behalf of the fighter.
Equally maybe I am totally underestimating what the Primefight deal is worth to the Promotor / Fighter.
Wahtever the situation I do find it sad that we can't see Carl on a Channel that's easily accesible, and available to a large chunk of the boxing fans out there.
Genuinely hope ppv sales go well - and Carl gets a decent cut.

Froch is a Sky Sports boxer at best, he's deluded if he thinks the average Boxing fan would pay (PPV) on SBO to watch his fights.

I think Kessler smokes him in this upcoming fight.

If Hennessy is such a bad promoter - could anyone list the fighters who have left his stable?

Herbie Hide
Ryan Rhodes

Whether you, me or anyone else dislikes him - his boxers think the world of him and that is quite a simple FACT!!! - other promoters have offered more money and TV - so why havnt they left Hennessy? - it is my belief he is dam good at what he does - it is not so long ago that many of you thought he was a top promoter and just because he has had difficulties with TV Executives who do not have a f*cking clue what a decent fighter is - many of you follow like sheep in your criticisms instead of opinions of your own.

Stand up and give your opinions instead of hiding in a crowd!!!

Hennessy is a good promoter - like him or not he has done bloody well for his stable.

Spud,
Rhodes never had a deal with Hennessy but I appreciate the point you are making.
Maybe his contracts give guarenteed purse money levels ?

Twenty Six,

I truly believe Meaty Mick has an outstanding knowledge of the sport, he knows his boxers well and helps them out in anyway he can both on a professional and personal front - but we are talking about him as a promoter - its not so long ago people remarked on how well matched his shows were, what the "good" show experience was like at a Hennessy Promotion and let me add - Hennessy has only been going for something like 8 years - where others have floundered - Hennessy has still kept going despite what I believe is the pathetic "witch hunt" against him - why has that happened - because I believe there are others in the sport who know or think Hennessy is a viable threat to them - he has had walls put up in front of him since day one.

Whilst I personally do not like Hennessy, that doesn't stop me thinking that he simply is not getting a "fair crack of the whip" - Hennessy would be as good as any and has proved as such when he gets TV deals - I am positive another will come through or he maybe go into some form of "sharing" deal with Matchroom or something like that.

Mr Twenty Six - we have to be fair here - you know my thoughts on Hennessy as I have ranted to you on the phone about him - I will state though that doesnt stop him from being a good promoter.

A mystery if I were perfectly honest - and I know why you are asking because you think thats Hennessy's job as a promoter!!!

Let me answer:

Hennessy sends out press releases to every local rag going - to ensure maximum publicity for his boxers.

Hennessy pays top dollar for posters of his shows in various fight magazines and still does.

Hennessy ensures his fighters are on local TV news programmes and with regards Froch he has been on the shows like Haye has.

Hennessy invites every top newspaper to press lunches etc etc just like any other promoter.

Hennessy on a huge number of occassions has paid for staff to hand out flyers at various sporting occasions and Nottingham Forest football matches to promote Froch to the other various sporting fans.

Hennessy has also had Froch in various publications and had him on radio programmes etc etc

Hennessy has had Froch and his boxers do public workouts at shopping centres and had them appearing at various non sporting shows and festivals.

What more can he do as a promoter ??

A lot of people have not like Froch's after fight interviews - personally I have - he is a top man and a top fighter - but he does come across as a tadge arrogant - I personally like that but it seems many dont.

He needs to get his boy more mainstream TV exposure. I understand Carl is on BBC TV this weekend. About time.
Macho he has done!!!

Froch throughout his professional career has been on the other shows like Haye has.

In addition for the early part of his career Froch was on the BBC albeit mainly highlights and in addition many of his top fights were on ITV - who can forget that Pascal fight - in reflection that is now proven as a top top result!!!

Name me a fighter who has had the exposure Froch has had outside of W arren's stable? - there is only one - David Haye.

I've always thought Froch's disjointed style isn't that attractive to watch and that plays a big factor. He's exciting, but his disjointed style means he often relies on the opponent to excite. Taylor vs Froch was dull untill the last round and KD rounds, the less we say about Dirrell the better.

He's "looks" so flawed also, easy to hit and slow that people do find it hard to believe he is an "elite" champion..... might sound crazy now, but people said the same about Joe Calzaghe when he went through a bad batch (Reid, Starie). Does anyone, a lay fan or an avid trainspotter give Froch a chance against.... say..... Chad Dawson. I remember the posts on her after the Taylor fight when a fight with Hopkins was muted.

Froch isn't the first British world champion not to become an established star...... Robin Reid, Junior Witter and Joe Calzaghe for a while.... .and I think the reason is cause the public couldn't quite take to them as a champion cause of their flaws.

Ricky did/does, but he didn't fight with a disjointed style and his flaws were only exposed at the top level. When Ricky won the world title (probably) it was a strong, but not flawless (how many right hands did he eat up) - However it was against one of the finest fighters of his generation.... Froch aint done that yet. If Froch beat Joe Calzaghe or Hopkins in the manner he beat Taylor (flawed but great heart) then he would be a British star.

Prior to that, Ricky but some fine displays, dominant but tactically and physically, against a sucession of hyped up fighters like Ben Tackie, Freddie Pendleton etc..... that got his name going.... it was those fights, that got us boxing fans saying "okay, the opponent might be passed it but this Hatton looks special"..... when has Froch ever put a display on that has made us say "oh... he looks special". We've had "great fight", We've had "fantastic heart" but have we ever had "special talent"????

Sadly, people can see Froch's flaws even when he is fighting at a lower level - people can see he isn't the quickest, is strong but not necessarily the biggest one punch KO artist ever, people can see he is easy to hit. Hatton's flaws were well disguised during his WBU reign and he put in some devasting chilling KO's.

Not saying disjointed always equals flawed and unsellable. The biggest selling British boxing of 90's had the most disjointed style possible. But he was a special talent, with greasy fast hands and chilling power, with reactions like a cat. It was obvious from his early Super Bantam days on ITV that Naz was something special.

Calzaghe wasn't as obvious, and thats why he had a slow burning career in terms of recognition.

If primetime were asking for £5 for the night then i think they might be in with a shout.
Is he lining his pockets though?Does anyone know what the figures were last time?I would be suprised if they got 20,000.Froch is only "big" in Nottingham, and most of them were either at the arena or cant get Primetime
Well he may not be lining his pockets by being on primetime thats true. Which means it would make even more sense for him to forget the short term PPV money, and build a british fanbase by fighting on itv or sky sports, it would make him more money in the long run.

Froch fans ask why he isnt well known outside nottingham i'll tell you all!
1. He isn't that good
2. He's a titt and everyday people just see him as a nobody who slags off fighters they've actually heard of like haye, khan and calzaghe.
3. He's never fought on british telly (not recently anyway) he didnt even beat taylor on british tv he did that on some poxy little US tv station that one man and his dog was watching.
4. AND this is the main one - He hasn't got a unique selling point! He's not very skilled / exciting to watch (Khan / Calzaghe), he hasn't got any charisma (Haye), he's arrogant so he isnt seen as an everyday bloke (Hatton), and he hasnt got an olympic medal (Harrison / Khan) lol.

Which is why the only boxers who are household names (or ones your family would know) in Britain are - Calzaghe, Hatton, Khan, Haye, and Audley Harrison. Lets face it when Harrison is a bigger name than you and your a world champion, you have serious problems.

I think you might have worded it a little less harshly Kingfinn, but I agree with your 4th point. I fail to see a "wow" factor in Froch's performances...... Yes, we've had "wow" what a fight, but not really "wow what a performance".

I think people know Froch more than TV companies think they do, but generally say to me..... cannot say my casual boxing fans friends is a valid measure - but all I can judge it on. All they tell me is that this Froch is a cocky so and so - the Pascal/Taylor should have beaten him had they been fitter and that Dirrell did beat him just was got robbed..... nobody is saying "wow" that was impressive...... it is quite reminiscent of early championship career Joe Calzaghe.

Unfortunately, before the super 6 these same people were also saying "Kessler will kill him" - now, obviously, this has died down. I think had Froch beaten Kessler (before Ward got to him) then - even if it wasn't a masterclass..... Froch would have been alot more popular among sports (not necessarily boxing) fans. People had heard of Kessler, people thought Kessler gave Super Joe a run for his money - these people were saying Kessler had the Super 6 in the bag and it would cement Joe's legacy.... so any win over a just once defeated Kessler would have done Froch the power of good. Now Kessler got beat up last time, not so good.

British casual boxing fans are quite fickle and it might be odd, but it is more about the performance than the actual fight... when a fighter gets talked about. It wasn't the thrilling come from behind, fight of the year, fight between Pavlik and then p4p contender Taylor that got the casual fans talking about Calzaghe vs Pavlik.... but it was Pavlik's dominant beat down of Gary Lockett.... that was more of a "wow" performance. Thats what Froch is lacking. The Reid fight is the closest he has come, but then Robin Reid had just recieved a bigger beating at the hands of exposed Lacy.

Maybe he did.
He's already putting some of his stable on other Promotor's shows.
Likewise, following Setanta's demise, the remaining Hayemaker fighters have appeared on Maloney shows.
I appreciate that Froch is above all of these fighters but mathematically would the benefits of taking 50% cut for a Sky date, have outweighted 100% of Primetime ?
Also what figure do you put on the exposure Sky brings ?
I am confused.
I really don't buy the theory that EVERY TV Executive hates Mick, and every other Promotor is ganging up on him.
Buiness is business.
If there's money to be made it happens.
I can't imagine a profitable deal being turned down just because the bloke's not liked.
I tend to agree with that. I can't help but feel Hennessy overvalued the fight/Froch and priced himself out of it. Obviously its not a simple a problem to fix as many on here would make out but at the end of the day Sky have an interest in boxing and show other promoters shows. So as a promoter if Hennessy can't get dates on Sky/ITV/BBC then he's failed where other promoters have suceeded. Re:Murray, he's a made for tv fighter and in his prime but he's not on tv(much) and not getting regular fights. If I was his adviser, I'd be having serious talks with Hennessy about moving to other promoters.

Anyone know the reason why ITV decided to bail on boxing? Could have Hennessy promotions made concessions to keep boxing on ITV? Or were ITV just keen to "get rid" of boxing. I guess we'll never know for sure.
ITV bailed on everything other than football, they got rid of the superbikes, touring cars and F1 as well as boxing but to be fair I read a lot at the time at how much shyt they were in financially and we all know when you're struggling you've got to make sacrifices and lets face it they were never going to let the football go.

My mistake from your argument i have now realised that froch is a better known boxer in Britain than Khan, Haye and Harrison. And since winning his belt has fought on british tv we all just missed it, and showtime home to second rate womens MMA and the boxing HBO doesnt want is actually hot property, thats like saying primetime tv is second to sky box office. Just to let you know showtime only has 13 million subscribers in the US and the fight was actually on showtime ppv as far as im aware.

Millions of people watched froch v pascal wow - pac v de la hoya, harrison v rogan, maccarinelli v ellis, khan v fagan, were all on that night it just means all the boxing fans were all watching boxing that was on that night, compared to the 20 / 30k british fans that tuned in to watch froch v dirrell, or the 0 britsh fans that have showtime at home and watched the froch v taylor fight. 625 thousand people watched Barkers last fight and he wasnt fighting for a world title and that had no publicity and 315k people watched Harrison win prizefighter last year.

I notice you didnt comment on the fact i said froch has no unique selling point and is a nobody outside nottingham. Yes the broken down wreck of Jermain taylor was a better match up than barret fighting haye in his 1st legitimate heavyweight fight, pretty sure he beat the largest world champion ever in his last fight after all that only sold 300k + worth of PPV buys in britain alone. Good thing frochs well know in america maybe some british people who go on holiday will get told who he is. lol

Whilst some of the negative points about Froch and his fame maybe true - David Haye only came to real prominence a bit after the Maccarinelli fight - I say a bit because it was a mighty struggle to sell Haye/Barrett - he then came to prominence because of all the hype about the Klitschko's and then of course the Valuev fight.

Got to say Haye's PR has been very good and in his case the trash talking has done him no harm whatsoever.

I honestly believe Froch's career is going exactly according to plan - of course if Froch beats Kessler then it will go up a notch again and naturally the hype in him will build further.

The alarm concerning this TV deal with Primetime is for me absolutely no concern at all.

Showtime has 13 million viewers world wide and it isnt just 1 single channel its 9 channels "showtime" is like having freeview. The same goes for HBO in that matter, the difference is HBO has 40 million subscribers in the US and is available in 150 countries.

The biggest ever fighters to fight on showtime are tarver and a shot Taylor (with exception to the super six tournament).

Compared to HBO who had taylor when he was good, mayweather, cotto, pacman, roy jones JR, hopkins, de la hoya, tyson, lewis, hatton - i can go on forever.

HBO also outsources the big fights to sky and so on, so people can actually watch the fights on other networks.

Was froch v taylor - frochs first title defence - available for viewing in his home country?

NO

Why? Because as i said nobody outside nottingham know who he is in england.

I would love for someone to drop the viewing figures for the froch v taylor fight.

Was froch v taylor - frochs first title defence - available for viewing in his home country?

showtimes viewing figures would have been very good for the froch-taylor bout. taylor wasn't shot at theat point. they have always had good figures. biggest fighters showtime have had are tarver and a shot taylor? are you having a laugh? try marvin hagler? your telin me tarver and taylor are better then him? mike tyson fought numerous times on showtime also try corrales vs castillo. 1 of the best fights in history, involving two legends. at the moment showtime have the super 6, fighters like bradley and donaire, showtime is and always will be a very good boxing channel
