Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
I personally think this is a decent fight and I can say with my hand on my heart if Mr Warren had made this kind of fight I'd say exactly the same.
With some of the WBO defences that our fighters have had in the past you could easily name 10 fighters who are better. In this case Beltran is rated 2, not including the champs by the IBO's computerised ratings and he is ranked 8 by boxrec as well as top 15 by a load of the bodies. He is definitely a class above some of the WBO defences we have been fed in the past.
Yeah you can say that DeMarco, Vasquez and Abril and a few others can be considered better fights but we don't know the ins and outs of negotiations.
I think sometimes just be happy with what you get because we could have been getting the lightweight equivelant of Tocker Pudwill or Bobby Gunn.

Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
Yep, I have Beltran at no 10 at Lightweight, soon to be 9 when Broner's future is clear.

Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
ring have beltran at 9. I believe that ring had all burns' lightweight opponents - bar gonzalez, who boxed better than the lot! - Mitchell, katsidis, and moses, in their top 10. if the American magazine are acknowledging burns' opponents, then so can we. and obviously roman Martinez was good, down at super feather. the super feather challengers, obviously, were not of sufficient calibre.
how many of master boxer Miguel Vazquez's opponents have been top 10 ranked?

After making his professional debut 14 years ago, Raymundo ‘Sugar’ Beltran has finally been given a world title opportunity. The 31 year old from Phoenix, Arizona will travel across the Atlantic on September 7th to take on WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns.
“I’ve been hearing about it [the fight] for about a month and we’ve been trying to make it happen. Thank God it worked.” Beltran told Livefight earlier. “I’ve been working so hard to make this happen and I think God that it finally seems like it’s around the corner.”
Beltran, 28-6 (17), is a sharp puncher, capable of putting together accurate combinations and displaying immense courage. He has been competing on the fringes of genuine world class for years and has shared the ring with the likes of Ammeth Diaz (who recently beat Martin Gethin in an IBF title eliminator), Sharif Bogere, Hank Lundy and Ji-Hoon Kim.
The 30 year old Burns, 36-2 (11), is acknowledged as one of the world’s premier lightweights and Beltran, who will be 32 years old on fight night, is undoubtedly facing the toughest task of his career. The Mexican born fighter isn’t concerning himself with such matters though. Instead, his biggest worry is getting a fair shake on the night from the judges.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me,” he said. “I’m gonna go and do my best to try and put up a great show and do my best to convince the judges. I’m fighting in his back yard so I’m gonna try and convince the judges that – if we go to a decision – I should get the victory. Normally in boxing, that’s the way it is. You go to their hometown and the home guy is the favourite. Hopefully this time we’ll get justice and that’s all we ask for.
“I know Ricky Burns is a good champion and there is a reason he’s kept the belt for a while, and was a champion at 130lbs too, but all I have to do is not worry about him or the judges. I’ll worry about me and do my job.
“I can fight inside and can box also. I’m ready for anything that happens you know? I fought [Hank] Lundy and beat him and then fought a completely different style of fighter in Ji-Hoon Kim and I beat him too. I can fight anybody.”
Following his tougher than expected victory over Gonzalez, Burns needs an impressive victory over a name opponent. Although those unfamiliar with his career will cast a glance at his record and dismiss this as a gimmee fight for Burns, Beltran is well respected within the sport. The six defeats on his record tell the story of a hard knock career rather than a soft touch.
“It’s gonna be a very, very good fight,” Beltran says. “I’m not an easy opponent. I’ve proved that already. I’ve been fighting top guys all the time and passed my tests. I’m ready for the next step and that’s to fight Ricky Burns.
“I’ve got my family here with me. I have three kids and I come from a family of boxers. Boxing is in my blood. I’ve been in boxing my whole time.
“I’ve been the underdog my whole life. Nobody has made my career but me. I’ve never had a promoter to pick my opponents. I’ve just been fighting anybody. I haven’t had a promoter my whole career. I always had to fight in the back yard of my opponent so this is nothing new for me. I’m used to it and I’m ready.
“Boxing is about challenges. I like challenges. The harder the challenger, the sweeter the taste of the victory and I’m ready to prove that I’m ready to be a champion.”

Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
I agree totally. whether he could beat broner or not, burns is still getting world class wins at lightweight and no one can really complain if he's consistently fighting guys who're ranked in the top 10 of respected magazines. burns looked way below par last time, stiff, slow, terribly out of range. the opponent, who had a lot of talent, seemed like he wanted to go in there to spoil and break the rhythm of burns, which contributed to looking bad. but we saw the toughness of burns and now know the adversity he can walk through (if we needed reminding after the roman Martinez thriller, rising from early knockdown and having to make some serious rallies) when Absolutely Everything had gone wrong.palooka wrote:There's plenty of tapes of Beltran and his style and strengths and weaknesses are known; that last fellow Ricky boxed, flipping heck, he were a dark horse. I can't really see all the mither; Ricky is very good, Broner has jumped 2 weight divisions; he'd have beaten Ricky I think but he maybe wouldn't have made the weight for the fight - he had form. Burns is one of the very top men at lightweight - a historic division, there are some very good men and some good match ups. Ricky comes across well and seems a decent bloke; best of luck to him, hope he earns a load and is in some exciting bouts.
if he was overtrained and had lost momentum from the Mitchell win, then let's hope we seem him back to his best and looking sharp. and if all goes well it's more likely the unification talks will resume, hopefully with Vazquez. Vazquez may not be a superfight, but he's one of the most avoided and tricky opponents in the world and it'd be one of the all-time biggest wins by a Scottish fighter.
Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
Ricky didn't fight for nearly 8 months. Having a fight like this in September ok for now.
Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
Just looked on the fightnews rankings and the 7 fighters listed between ricky in the champion slot and beltran in 8th hardly get me excited. the only ones i really know a great deal about are moses and gonzales that ricky has beat already.
So short of a unification the options for ricky are limited and as such i can accept this bout as a decent challenge in the mean time
Although i don't see a unification coming soon if they are already discussing the winner of rees vs crolla as rickys next opponent. although i can also see the logic of securing another big domestic match up
However if ricky gets through this beltran fight and the winner of rees vs crolla, anything short of a big unification next year is going to leave mr nelson and his assosiates desperately short of acceptable answers im afraid.

Vazquez is yet to beat a reigning or former world champion. The only world champions he has fought are Alvarez and Bradley, he lost to both and that was before either of them became world champion.Autobarn wrote:ring have beltran at 9. Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
there's a lot of nitpicking on here. we all wanted Mitchell, then burns won too easily, and then Mitchell was nothing. none of burns' challengers have been perfect but they've all brought something, and they've been rated more highly by the American magazine than they are on this forum.
I kind of tuned out of all the burns v broner negotiations. I can understand a lot of you are disappointed that this most dangerous of fights didn't come off. I believe burns will still be beating top 10 lightweight guys, defending his lightweight title, when broner has gone well out of fashion.
burns is not claiming yet to be a superstar or a modern great. he's a world champion and he's delivering vs good-enough opponents, discounting the 3 challengers at 130. what he's doing is more than good enough for sky sports' fight nights. ricky is being well taken for granted on here and I don't like it.
I hope crolla makes an impression vs rees, a really big impression. I know Anthony is capable of it. I thought his fights seemed to have gone a little tame, a bad sign for an aggressor (vs limond and the Mexican in America). but crolla went in some tear ups, vs Farrell, two with derry, and while he didn't beat the scouser he's improved. beating rees will put Matthews behind him and EBU title success could send him towards a world title shot. maybe i'm asking a lot but look at how Jamie McDonnell and burns himself have gone through drastic improvements. if crolla gets some momentum he can challenge burns in a really good fight for the sky sports crowd.

Re: Burns v Raymundo Beltran September
very true. also the best of Mexicans usually come back from early career defeats, as part of a crucial learning experience.
at 135 Vazquez is a very difficult boxer with some clever wins over Prescott, zappavinga and kim and some lesser opponents.
if you follow the trade news, you seldom see headlines of other fighters calling him out. he's not someone ppl want to fight. if burns were to unify with a skilled and apparently avoided fighter - perhaps anxious for a big win himself, Vazquez - then it'd be a major win.

Argenis Mendez is back training in the uk and was more than happy to move up and challenge Ricky but it fell on deaf ears. Billy if you honestly still think that burns beats Mendez every day of the week you clearly over rate your mans skills. Why won't your camp consider Mendez ?

To be fair Mendez had nothing to bring to the table when Ricky was SFW champ, then Mendez got beat for the title which would have made the fight even harder to make or has that escaped you attention.HPI wrote:Argenis Mendez is back training in the uk and was more than happy to move up and challenge Ricky but it fell on deaf ears. Ricky became LW champ and Mendez won the SFW title and I don't think he's defended it yet, I watched Mendez on DVD and can't see a problem for Ricky at all
