The proof is in the pudding. AJ sells 75-80k tickets and Fury does not. If Fury fights Helenius it won't sell 70k at any venue in the world IMO.

I think it's just the Hearn/Sky/Matchroom hype and branding, rather than any organic widespread love for AJ.
To be fair to AJ, he looks amazing - like the HW champ should. He had that Olympic showcase and he's well marketed. I can see why he's popular, but for me - Fury should be the bigger draw. He's bigger, he's like a walking cartoon caricature, he's more relatable, flawed, he has a cooler name ! Generally speaking "The Gypsy King" is a walking event - a promoter's dream.

AJ is very popular with the casuals.

AJ has crossover appeal and is very marketable, you just need to look at the adverts for that. This is just my opinion, but I think Fury has next to no female fans, gay male fans and families. Fury is a maverick and says what he wants, but that doesn't translate to the kind of appeal AJ has. I've met Fury three times, once in the ams, once in his early pro days and before the 1st Wilder fight and he was an absolute gentleman all three times. He was humble, knowledgeable and polite. He is hardly ever like that when there's a camera in front of him, so I don't think we see a great deal of the real Fury.

And they used to pronounce it like they were calling me "a cant" when they said it !
