If I want soap opera, I'll watch Eastenders.

Bored of boxing now- too many good fights just don't happen, and all the talk seems to be about the "politics" and of the sport.... Khan leaves Warren, Calzaghe in court, Hatton likes pies..

:witzend:

It's hard to follow fighters now - great wins are followed up with... nothing much. (OK, Froch and Haye are exceptions.) But look at how little competition there is for the British title.

The fact is that LITERALLY one or two competative boxing matches take place a WEEK in Britain.

Come on, cut the talk, lets see some promoters puitting on decent shows.

That is actually quite an interesting post.

I was having a conversation with a few disenfranchised journalist types not so long ago. They claimed that 24/7 news, twitter, forums etc were killing people's enthusiasm - I am talking in general terms here, not boxing specifically.

Years back, people's anticipation prior to an event, or awareness of a particular news story, was built slowly with quality journalistic analysis and assessment. That rarely happens anymore. The misguided desperation for 'breaking news' creates millions of non-stories and lousy opinions that are here today, gone tomorrow.

You're right. Pre-internet, one was able to avoid all the months and months of build-up crap, press releases (ugh!), the dastardly 'politics' and the out-and-out bullshit. Now, it is everywhere. How many opponents is Khan supposed to be fighting as I speak? Hatton, Malignaggi, Maidana, Marquez and Cayo are just five names that spring to mind. He will probably wind up fighting Hatton - "Magic" Matthew.
I am reminded of the scene in Kelly's Heroes when Oddball, looking at a bridge through his binoculars, says, "It's still up!"
A plane then flies over bombs the bridge. "No it ain't."

It cuts both ways though. The issue isn't the platform, it's the way it's used. All new media can be used positively to build hype, break genuinely interesting news etc. Because some are misusing that platform with poor communication techniques etc doesn't mean it's the technology that's at fault.
Let's also remember the plus points - look at the ability of everyone to get instant information now and to get different viewpoints - Bennie, I'll use a perfect example knowing your disillusionment with BN in recent years... if that had still been the only source for fight fans rather than forums like this (including your own previews :TU:) , you can argue that it would have been far worse for fans. It's a lot harder for promoters to pull the wool over people's eyes as well.
The positives of the digital era far outweigh the negatives outlined above IMO, although it means the gradual demise of the industry I love and currently work in :(

It gives people a 'voice' at least, which is something they never had prior to the internet. Plus, Frank Maloney once said that the 'big' newspapers are no longer interested in boxing, which is true, and the internet does offer stories those same newspapers would have once carried.

You know what the internet has really hammered, in my opinion - television. I have never known it so bad.
