Serhiy Dzinziruk is the best european at light middle.

most would have him bottom half of the top 10.

puts things into perspective.

just cos rhodes is euro champ doesn't mean he necessarily deserves a shot.

especially when the euro scene is a bit gash compared to the world level guys. :OhYes:

twentysix said Rhodes was in his prime now so perhaps he can engineer an IBF ranking and fight K-9

I think he would have lost to koceny on that showing

Who is his promoter?

Absolutely

I knew that people would put 2+2 together and say because Hatton gave Canelo a fight and Rhodes hits harder/faster than Hatton, that means Rhodes is a live dog

He was never a live dog to me because his workrate isn't good enoughs Also, Alvarez was at the 154lbs limit so wouldn't have been as sluggish as in the Hatton fight

He reminds me of Cotto a little bit with his patience body punching and combinations. Still only 20, think he needs to fight a southpaw next to get more used to the stance. He seemed a little hesitant to me early on hen Rhodes switched

Gutted for Rhodes.

Fight was decided the minute Alvarez took him seriously. Can't think of another of his fights where he took less chances and presented as few openings.

Canelo was incredible.

He's a future superstar and p4p'er.

Anyone criticising Rhodes is an idiot. He walked into a 20 year old who fought like a seasoned veteran and the peak of his powers. Incredible.

agreed mate - but he's 20 years old - when you look at Murray's British title fight last night and seen a 19 year old kid out of his depth and consider that Canelo is just a year older - incredible that he boxed with such maturity and poise against a class operator like Rhodes

massive improvement from the Hatton fight, Hatton didn't do better - Alvarez just stepped up massively

Totally disagree, Alvarez just wouldn't allow him to get going.

Exactly. Alvarez was too good, Rhodes couldn't get past his handspeed and movement, and when he did open up, Alvarez had real power and authority with his punches

Those bodyshots, especially that meaty left hook must really demoralise boxers like Rhodes when they are trying to make some sort of impact on a fight.

There's quite a bit of sh1te being talked on the forums about Rhodes. Should expect it I suppose. A lot of numpties saying things like Rhodes simply went for the money; he was ignoring his corner; didn't even try, etc.

Just shows complete ignorance of how a match up like this plays out.

Alvarez was near on punch-perfect. Like someone else on this thread has said, he is very reminiscent of (a young) Miguel Cotto; great combination puncher with good hurtful power and is very accurate.

Rhodes deserves huge credit for the way he's earned this shot so long after his 1st world title fight.

I agree that Alvarez wouldn’t let Rhodes into the fight and Rhodes doesn’t deserve any criticism whatsoever.

The criticism of Rhodes is unfair, but it comes from the ridiculous way people built up his chances.
I just think everyone who thought Rhodes would win was huge under-estimating Alvarez and over-rating Rhodes. He was trying to win a title at altitude in Mexico and had never boxed outside the UK before.
Apart from Moore, who was weight drained, and Otis Grant a lifetime ago, he'd never boxed in near that class.

Disappointed Rhodes didn't let his hands go more.

Although, as I said in the build up to this fight, Alvarez is/was in a different league.

It's funny how some people are still voting in the "Will Rhodes beat Canelo" poll on this thread. Predicting masterminds!

Ryan just found himself between a rock and a hard place - Alvarez was just superb, Ron Borges was slagging off Ryan on twitter so I had to put the dumb ass American in his place.

Did Coldwell really say "you've lost every round, so you may as well get knocked out" ?!

I felt Alvarez improved a lot from the Hatton fight. He probably underestimated Hatton but seemed to have taken Rhodes very seriously.

For a twenty year old he boxed in a very mature manner. He doesn't appear to have single punch KO power but he is extremely strong, accurate, calm, patient and throws nice combinations.

However, on the back foot I think he looks vulnerable. His head movement was good and he was hit less than he was against Hatton, but he'll be tested much more when somebody tries to take the fight to him.

Rhodes seemed surprised by the strength and speed of Alvarez and seemed to be discouraged. Not until the later rounds did he throw anything with bad intentions. He wasn't able to deal with the combinations and looked all over the place any time he was backed up. The corner didn't seem to have a Plan B and even if they did I doubt it would have been enough.

Alvarez looked huge, I wonder if he has problems making weight and I doubt he'll remain at Light Middle for too much longer.

I don't think he's the complete package just yet. We all thought Rhodes would test him, but he didn't. I think he should be looking for a fight with Cotto next, whom I think he'd wear down and stop, although I think Cotto is after the Margarito rematch.

Any potential bout with Chavez Jr seems a long way off yet as both can sell tickets independently. My favourite matchup for him would be with Cintron or Williams.

good post, but at 20 we can't expect the complete package, but he's far closer than he's any right to be and he's having learning fights at World Title level and improving immeasurably each time.

Cotto v Margarito 2 is on for NYC in December, so Cotto isn't next - Cintron or Williams would be great fights, but that brutal Martinez KO has made people forget just how highly rated and avoided Williams was so that would be a heck of a challenge.

Chavez Jr fight would be a joke. Canelo would destroy him and make him look the ordinary fighter he is. Golden Boy at least are going to put Alvarez in fights that matter, Chavez hasn't had one and they won't risk him because they know his name and unbeaten record sells tickets even though he's totally untested. Arum wont let one of his cash cows get beaten, he'll keep putting him in with his own fighters too. Arum is the worst thing about boxing at the moment

he did. although he was trying the persuade him to open up, not to try and get knocked out.
