my brothers new bill as they used to drink in the same pubs in the area and when they bumped into him he was always asking about how there training was going and there next fights ect ect (bill new his boxing) i remember the day before i last boxed i went into a well known pub to collect some ticket money and bill was there, as soon as he see me he was on me asking if i was ready and how i felt he seemed to be more excited than i was, lol we had a good chat about boxing he told me a couple of stories of when he boxed in miami and he wished me luck and told me to get a early night (which i did) lol i remember thinking after that he new his stuff and every time i met him he was a nice fella and we would always chat about boxing thats how i will always remember him :TU:

How about Derek and Jason Rowland? They were good boxers from West Ham / Canning Town. Jason always came across as being very level headed and decent.

Eddy wrote:Don't know Jason Rowland to speak to, but my brother trained down a gym in Rainham once or twice about a year ago (just off the round-about), and he was there training boxers with Paul Cook. As for Jango, used to see him down The Peacock all the time. Like you say Darcy, always seemed nice and chilled out. Only to say hello though. Lots of people WERE very weary about the fella. Always had a bit of a interest in him. Someone should write a book about him.
Jason's doing his training at Belhus, just down the road, last I heard.

Cheers :TU: ; It was Roy Rowland; I must have been thinking DerekGrainger who was around the weight, active at the same time and similar weight division.

I went to Tollgate junior school with Billy 'Jango' Williams, we were in the same class. His dad, Ollie, was a boxer, so was his older brother Chris. Somebody on here mentioned he had a twin brother. It's the first I've heard of it. He had a sister named Theresa, and a younger brother who I think was named Johnny. We both started boxing at Fairbairn Hall in Barking Road. As we grew older we got taller at the same rate, but Billy got wider at the shoulders. After seeing him hit other boxers in a ring at 13 or 14 years old, I'm glad I wasn't in his weight limit. He was okay by me, we met loads of times over the years, but he did have a temper. I was in the Sultan one Sunday dinner time when he came in. He had been in a fight in a wine bar near the Boleyn the night before, I think it was called Charlies. I was told that 4 or 5 youngsters, in their 20s I suppose, started on him, and as he was hitting one in front of him, the one behind him broke a bottle and stuck it in his calf muscle. When he went down they all piled in. I was told he went back a few nights later (no idea if its true or not as it's the not the sort of thing you could ask him) as he went in the door he picked up a heavy glass ashtray and set about them good and proper. The last time I saw him was about 2007 in the bookies in Tollgate Road. 'Alright Bill' was all I said. He just nodded. I heard about him dying of a heart attack a few days after it happened. I was living in Norfolk by then, and news spreads fast. Nice enough bloke as long as you never crossed him. None of us are perfect. A bit late, but R.I.P. Bill.

In Judas Pig Bill/Jango is referred to as "Bongo" and according to the book Davey Hunts firm shoot him twice to wound him for taking a few liberties in one of their Pubs. It also alledges he was a fantastic Boxer based in America being looked after by mobsters but was sent home after he tried boffing a gangsters Moll in the back of a limousine.

Seems a "colourful" character but going to jail for completely pointless things seems pretty moronic to me.
At least the likes of that Hunt chap ( I was on the fire that burnt one of his waste management sites down in Dagenham ) do all their villainy for huge amounts of money and live in massive mansions and own golf courses etc

Can't see the point of being a nutter just the for the sake of being a nutter!
