I could understand an immediate Ortiz rematch in place of Fury back in 2018, if Wilder really wanted to correct a wrong... But as Ortiz is only getting older and older and didn't really impress in the three fightd following Wilder, this feels like a marriage of convenience for Wilder more than anything.
The first one was a good high level fight, but now we are looking at late 2019 - Ortiz will be god knows how old - it just unnecessarily retreading elderly ground.
IMO it's just another way of not giving Whyte his shot whilst waiting on Fury. Though I suppose Wilder probably would have just fought a voluntary against Kownacki instead if Ortiz' handlers hadn't inexplicably rejected the Joshua offer.
Wilder will defend his WBC heavyweight title versus Ortiz on November 23 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, as BS.com previously reported. Showtime is expected to distribute the Wilder-Ortiz rematch as the main event of a four-fight telecast.
