This whole thing will not happen anyway, if Haye is forced to fight the winner of this stupid interim belt then he will vacate in order to go after the big fish in the HW division. I will guarantee you of that. It is not Hayes style to go for meaningless fights, as good as Kali and his mate sicknote are, they are definately not on Hayes radar.

Yes, choosing to go after the biggest paydays against the best opposition rather than a little-known (internationally) KO1 Danny Williams victim. Truly a lowlife.

I have been among those pulling for Meehan to get his due the past couple of years. However I don't believe he deserved to be ranked as highly as he was/is, but the fact that the WBA DID rank him that way and then ignored his mandatory status is plain unfair. He may have been relatively inactive but this wasn't his fault and also he hadn't lost. In fact, he hadn't been inactive for 12 months at the time they replaced him at number one with John Ruiz, who HAD been out for more than a year and hadn't won since Valuev beat him a second time. Making him mandatory was BS of the highest order and grossly unfair to Meehan.

HOWEVER I can't condone an interim title fight. Haye is the new and active champion, only just fought this month and will be making his mandatory defence in his next fight. How on earth can an interim title fight be justified? In that regard, look at Meehan-Chagaev as merely an eliminator - although as stated, it's unfair that Meehan has to go that route. It should be him against Haye in March, not Ruiz.

If it goes ahead as an interim fight, then as others have stated, it just gives Haye reason/opportunity to take other, more lucrative fights for at least 18 months, which is fair enough, but Meehan (if he beats Chagaev) will just be left with an entirely meritless form of a belt.

I think Jean-Pierre Coopman would have been a better heavyweight Title holder than Haye.

but you r right ruiz should have been dropped much further in the rankings, let alone get a mandatory fight or a title shot ffs. it's the worst case of favouring i've ever seen in boxing. i'd doubt anyone has ever been gifted the breaks that ruiz has been given.

the thing that bothers me with kali is how on earth he can allow them to treat him like a goose. if he had a decent lawyer he would have been given his shot a year or two ago. i think he is just too nice a guy to try and rock the boat by the looks of it.

You got to feel for Meehan. No one in main stream knows this guy and retirement age is fast catching up on him..... if not already.

Yes, and unfortunately I don't think he'll beat Chagaev. I HOPE he does, though, for two reasons. First, he deserves a break after being messed around so much, and second, a Kali win would be better for the division than recycling a guy who's already been trounced by Wlad. I'd make Haye a strong favourite over Meehan, but a fight between them would be potential fireworks! However as said, if he fights and beats Chagaev for an interim belt, then we'd just have them both pursuing different paths, while the WBA collects two sets of sanctioning fees.

would a fight between haye and meehan (assuming kali beats chagaev) have to happen in the uk or a long shot in aussie, or would it do better in vegas?

i know the general aussie public don't know sfa about kali but knowing that aussies love a sporting underdog especially one of our own, but if advertised properly u would think there would be live support whether it happened here or the uk( there are sh**tloads of us over there).
but i would doubt haye would fight outside of europe.

Haye would (and has) fought in the US, but I suppose Aus depends on the money. Could any Aus promoter stump up enough cash? Well, Roy Jones can't have come cheap, but then Green is a bigger draw than Meehan, too.

Haye-Meehan would be a tough sell in the UK because British fans primarily remember Meehan for the Williams result. I know Kali is better than that result makes him look, but boxing fans have long memories, especially when looking for negatives.

Haye-Meehan in the US would be even less likely, because neither side would have significant fan support.

Let's face it, the only way Meehan will get to Haye is if he's the mandatory contender, and the interim status, despite giving a physical belt, would actually push him further back for a shot at the real title.
