Finally...it's happening for Meehan
WBA orders interim heavy title
Meehan and Chagaev to meet for title The World Boxing Association held meetings at their recent annual convention in Medellin, Colombia, where they ordered an interim heavyweight championship between WBA No. 1-ranked mandatory challenger Kali Meehan and former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev. Meehan earned the WBA No. 1 position in October 2007 by scoring a sixth-round technical knockout over DaVarryl Williamson at Madison Square Garden, and he has been patiently waiting to fight for the WBA heavyweight championship ever since. “I am grateful Don King has maintained his faith in me, and I will become the WBA interim heavyweight champion,” Meehan said. “I look forward to meeting and defeating Ruslan Chagaev and then facing the winner of David Haye versus John Ruiz.”
The WBA confirmed that the winner of Meehan-Chagaev will face the winner of the match between newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and WBA heavyweight mandatory challenger John Ruiz.
Meehan’s promoter, Don King, said he’s relieved Meehan will finally get the match he was promised.
“Kali has been very loyal and committed to the WBA and their problems while waiting over two years to appear in the world championship match he earned,” King said. “He understood their problems and has been patient, going along with them to keep the WBA in good standing.”
“The WBA is committed to Kali Meehan fighting for their interim heavyweight championship and for the winner of this match to become mandatory challenger for their most prestigious crown, the WBA heavyweight championship.
“Kali will have Australia and New Zealand behind him when he steps into the ring.”

Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
So when Chag gets another disease and pulls out will Meehan automatically get a real title shot?
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
let's hope so. I don't think Haye would be too worried about Kali TBH. That's if Haye gets past Ruiz of course.Marlin wrote:So when Chag gets another disease and pulls out will Meehan automatically get a real title shot?
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Haye wouldn't be worried because Kali will be 52 by the time they actually give him a shot...

Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Thats great news for Kali and Don King couldnt have been more right by commending Kali's loyalty. He's given up a lot in the last 2 yrs and his trainer Mark also.
Kali will stop Chag's - Haye will beat Ruiz and Kali will put Haye into retirement as long as he is fit.

Please wake up!!! Haye will despatch Kali within 3 rounds. Kali has never been fought anyone of Hayes class, speed and power. Good luck to Kali anyway.
This whole thing will not happen anyway, if Haye is forced to fight the winner of this stupid interim belt then he will vacate in order to go after the big fish in the HW division. I will guarantee you of that. It is not Hayes style to go for meaningless fights, as good as Kali and his mate sicknote are, they are definately not on Hayes radar.
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Apparently Don King release this false information.
The WBA are not sanctioning any fight for an interim HW Title.

Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
I can honestly say I'm baffled how a fighter who hasn't fought for over 2 years can retain a #1 rating :?? :?? :??
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
15 months, not two years. His last fight was on August 30 2008. Vitali Klitschko was out for three years.bollox wrote:I can honestly say I'm baffled how a fighter who hasn't fought for over 2 years can retain a #1 rating :?? :?? :??
By the way, this story is on the WBA's official site.

Kali has had opponents change their minds as well as that fiasco in Finland, not his fault.
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
he wont go after the big fish in the division coz there only 2! and those 2 will no doubt beat him!ra2006 wrote:Sandman,Sandman wrote:Thats great news for Kali and Don King couldnt have been more right by commending Kali's loyalty. He's given up a lot in the last 2 yrs and his trainer Mark also.

He is a real wanker, isn't he?
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Ive checked the official site and cant find anything about it. The statement releasedcame from Don King and Golden say it is garbage and the WBA has told them there in no way there will be an interim title fightBrute wrote:15 months, not two years. Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Ra2006, Im wide awake.
Man opinions are like assholes everyone has one that includes you and me. Like him or hate him if you have been following boxing in the last, 4 or 5 decades you will agree that Don King has a bit of pull.
I know he is capable of turning round and walking away from promises but this one looks fairly promising and im sure Kali is taking it seriously.
When Kali fought Brewster I dont care what anyone says he won that fight and should have been crowned the champ and oh Brewster had just destroyed Wladimir Klitschko in 5 rounds but maybe you dont rate him either. :P
Anyway you nor me can say accurately if this fight will take place and even if the results pan out to where these 2 would face off but Kali has a great arsenal that he carries around and when fit and focused he can cause trouble for anyone.

Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Kali should fight the first person who gives him shitt thats how bad Kali needs a fight.
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Brute - Agreed, he is a wanker. I think the t-shirt incident was in very poor taste and his attitute stank the place out during the build up to the Valuev fight.
Bentley - he will beat Wladimir, but lose to Vitali.
bollox & Brute - 15 months without a fight and still number one, lets leave that one as a mystery
Sandbox - Sorry mate, I do not agree with you with the Kali/Brewster fight, even though he give it a great effort with lots of heart I had it Brewster.
I think that only three men who are the HW division at the moment, Haye and the Kiltscko bros. Of which there will be some fireworks from them since Haye has arrived on the scene. You then have the group below them, the Ruiz's, Arrellia, Chagaev, Peter, Adamek, Valuev, and my darkhorse to make waves next year Albert Sosnowski (UK based Pole who should be Europeon Champion next month). Expect some cracking match ups as these guys will all be aiming for a shot at the big three.

Brewster's father thought Meehan won it. He told his son he should give the belt to Kali. Kali's punch in the 8th that broke Lamont's jaw had to be the best pinch in the fight.
Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Credibility gone rarara06.
Not only did Brewster's own father see it that way but the whole crowd booed the decision. It was only luck that Brewster got out of the 8th.
I notice in today's Daily Telegraph they have a story on Kali getting his shot and its been all over fightnews.com to so some people out there believe its real, i bet Kali does.
You mention that there is only 3 hw's out there but don't be surprised if the Samoan Sledge Hammer doesn't shake things up as well. There's a saying that goes never kick a champion when hes down cause they make a habit of getting back up!

The latest Ring Magazine lists the 20 worst decisions of the decade on pgs 48 & 49.
Brewster and Meehan is listed with the comment "This decision put the "lame" in Lamon."

Re: Finally...it's happening for Meehan
Holyfield v Lewis wasnt that bad !!
Anyway, what a great break for Kali. If he performs as well as he has in his last few fight, although they were some time ago, I can't see him having a prob with Chag or Haye....if Haye beat Ruiz!! Kali at his best beats these three guys.
GO KALI.........
