Yes he doesn't like to be backed up (who does) but apart from that he dictated matters and busted up Butler, although the stoppage came out of the blue.

the corner did pull him out, they told richie during the previous round break they didnt want him to take any punishment and to stop the fight if he looked like it wasnt going anywhere.

I think most people would agree Richie is the best ref in england.

Quality boxing as we have come to expect from Barker. His left has was excellent and he added some rhythm by mixing in a short left hook.

Barker has won Commonwealth and British titles without having a defining fight. But he's looked a class above all the guys he fought, he looks mature physically and should just move up in class now. He wanted the Macklin fight, but it wasn't happening. What Barker needs is not Macklin - which would have been great to watch for us - but two really meaningful fights in a row that will push him up European and world rankings.

Really solid package is Barker. I believe he can win a world title. It's a shame he didn't fight Elcock when Wayne was British champ. And a shame that he couldn't/didn't get fights with Ouma and Jantuah. Hennessy mentioned these fighters before and it was a damn shame that they didn't happen, as they could have pushed Barker's career forward and given his career momentum lacking after the Macklin fight didn't happen.

I would have agreed with you TT. It looked a premature stoppage.

But as kingfinn posted, Butler's corner abdicated their responsibilities by asking Davies to intervene if it looked like their man couldn't back in the fight. Rosenthal and McGuigan mentioned it afterwards.

Very strange thing for a corner to do imo. It's their job to look after and assess their man.

Totally agree that Barker is a class act. Obviously a level above the guys he is fighting right now. He needs much tougher challenges imo to determine whether he can raise his game. Prime example of a very talented Brit fighter that should go the Euro route with a few tough seasoned fighters that have fought on the circuit in the States. Only that way will we see whether he has world class credentials.

You have to give Butler credit for two things, taking the fight at very short notice and making a go of it in the first round. Unfortunately for Butler he was no match for Barker who gave the kid a boxing lesson. Barker is a very worthy British and Commonwealth champion who will now go on to bigger and better things, and good luck to him, he deserves it. Plonker of the night title has to go to Superbad Barnes. I have watched him before and he was lucky to get the win then. He seems to think he is a KO specialist yet he only has one stoppage on his record, and this was only his 5th outing. Instead of boxing he tries to take his opponents out with one big punch, but he just isnt accurate or good enough to do that. The only thing the lad has in his favour is his toughness, his boxing skills are just pathetic, and he might as well give up now, because he is never going make it. I think it was his dad who said if you lose this you are finished. Purdey fought well and was very honest in the post fight interview. I like him, he has good skills, and determination and should do very well on the domestic scene. I cant see him going beyond domestic but he will give anyone on these shores a good run for their money. He was lucky tonight his opponent had to retire because that cut was really deep.

Rather than making anymore British/Commonwealth defences I would like to see him step into international class, as mentioned. I wonder how his career will fare now that the ITV contract has run out. Surely a talent like Barker needs a TV outlet for his headliners.

Similarly to how Froch beat Tatevosyan I would like to see Darren given someone of that ilk as he moves up and even a top ten EBU ranked fighter would be good, to get him line for a European title shot.

Fights against Eastman and Elcock could still be useful for him at British title level.

Having seen the fight, he never produced any real clean shots.

Lack of fitness on the part of Butler was a bigger factor. Nice to see Barker progressing, British and Commonwealth Titles; a couple of defences, then European Honours.

Purdy-Douglas was a very good fight very exciting, I didnt think Douglas would last the 1st round but he gritted it out and came on strong I gave him the 2nd and the 3rd before his shoulder injury stopped it. El-Macchi looked powerful very loose limbed which makes him easy to get held but good result finishing Spitko who is very tough. Barker was brilliant very accurate and strong at Middleweight, Butler looked in a diffrent league but as said on the show his time will come he's still very young, Barker still makes silly mistakes like dropping his hands when going out but overall was very impressive, I see him beating Macklin

Yep, on reflection I agree with both yourself and King Finn - I got it wrong watching it on TV with the sound down. What looked an odd stoppage was actually Richie giving the lad one last hurrah, before following the request of Butler's corner and pulling him out. A brave effort from a late sub but the lad was winning nothing and has been saved to fight another day

Yeh el-macchi looks as if he might be world class, will he get a big fight though - he is certainly entertaining.

x 2. He has athletic ability and natural power but I dont think that he has the basic boxing fundamental technique to excel beyond domestic level.

I didn't realise you could go back to Amateur once a pro but learn a new thing everyday. Has anyone actually done it before that you know of?

I think you can go back to the am's as long as you've had 4 fights or less.
you can't box at olympics , and i think at world championships as well.

I bet Chambers was loving that too! I thought to myself 'whats going on here?' Is Barker a closet Baggies fan?.. Personally I preferred El Marachi coming out to The Boss. Pure class

Aye, great song, mention that in his fight report/interview with his trainer. Prob won't go up until tomorrow.

Barker report and quotes, don't think you'll agree with Mick :TU:
Cheers for that Terry. I'm glad Butler has responded in such positive fashion to his two set-backs - yet further proof that having a couple of losses can potentially really aid a fighter's development rather than signal the end of their career, as so many armchair punters seem to think in this era.
