Joe Bugner with his Australian based WBF world title, shown live on Saturday TV in the UK one afternoon. Audley Harrison claimed that to.

Willie Jorrin, WBC Super Bantam Title, how did this guy ever win a title fight?

got even more...depends on what type of world title, if you include WBU, WBF then you have open up a right can of worms! if you dont then you could have for example, Johnny Bumphus, Manning Galloway, Trevor Berbick...more recently Vivian Harris (the version who lost to Maussa), and Andrew six heads Lewis.

Yes, and Esham Pickering was scheduled to fight him for the title at one point. Pickering withdrew (presumably injury), Aiken stepped in and won. Pickering must really be kicking himself about that, he almost certainly would have a major world title to his name without that piece of bad luck.

x2 - the man was a effing embarrassment.

Maussa and Urango were pretty terrible. Michael Bennt was shocking.
Urango had some good wins after the ricky fight. regained the strap etc. hes a solid guy.

Keith Mullings - I remember wondering how the hell a man with a record of 13-3-1 managed to get a shot at the world middleweight title! Then he LOST, albeit in a close fight, and he gets another shot! Strangely enough though, he did ok at world level, but 16-8-1 must be the worst career record of any world champ?

x3, Luis Santana may have won the title in pretty wrong circumstances, but he was a much better fighter than Carlos Maussa.

Santana didn't really beat the champion he fought legitimately, everyone knows those results were ridiculous.

Maussa at least crushed Vivian Harris in decisive style. Maussa also gave a rising Cotto a good fight, and made Hatton work too. Maussa was a weird fighter who totally lacked finesse, but he was fit, strong, durable and a wild puncher.

Certainly not pretty to watch, but effective. Maussa was better than the general perception.

Maussa was horrible and coudln't even beat nobodies like Arturo Morua, Manuel Garnica...like you say he had good KO power and that's the only thing that got people to know him when he landed on Harris...

I never said Maussa was a quality champion but the worst ever? Not even close to being that imo. Go back through the years and there have been plenty worse.

At least Maussa had campaigned competitively at world level on more than one occasion, prior to becoming a titlist. There have been fighters in the past who were complete one hit wonder, having never campaigned competitvely at real world level either before or after holding a strap.

surely Maussa isn't the worst of all time, you will always find worst champs if you dig far back in the years.
Maussa is just the worst I can remember of ! and I'm not the only one it seems :TU:

The devaluation of the word 'champion' means that there are many to choose from but for me it has to be Seldon for the disgraceful way he laid down for Tyson. Absolutely pitiful. He should have just handed his belt over and saved us our money and time (albeit he didn't take too much of the latter).

I agreed with you. Santana as a world champion was a complete joke. Though i personally think its impossible to pick out one fighter as the single worst ever though. Boxing's been around for too long to just find one.

at least gavin rees beat a solid defending champ in mbaye and not picked up a vacant strap like so many others did nowadays, kotelnik will never be the greatest either but rees at least was competitive and not out of his depth against him

I remember Esham getting his chance and then picking up the injury, but you're stretching the truth saying he'd almost certainly have a major World title. In truth he'd have almost certainly lost and although he'd have probably been competitive, him actually winning would have been very unlikely.

Pereira beat 6 'World title' challengers in his career including Rogers Mtagwa(who gave Juanma so much trouble)by stoppage, Emmanuel Lucero, Whyber Garcia and Fahprkorb Rakkiatgym.

6 months later Pickering was soundly beaten by Bernard Dunne and 7 months previously he had fought a 50/50 bout with Michael Hunter, who himself was found to be seriously wanting at World level. Pereira wasn't a fantastic fighter by any means, but he certainly isn't one of the worst ever and he didn't look out of place at fringe World title level. He may have even stopped Pickering.

Well, we'll never know! But Pickering on his best night was fringe world class, too. I know he'd lost to Hunter at that point but when he was on his Euro run, he looked very, very good. And Pereira was pretty poor the night he lost to Aiken. Certainly that was a night when all the stars could have aligned for Pickering; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
