Why wasnt drink allowed into the arena?
Booze hasnt been allowed into the hall for a number of years at British boxing shows. The ban was bought in following several beer fuelled riots incl James Murray v Drew Docherty, amongst others..
I can understand that reasoning but surely they can get booze fuelled pre fight and in the bar and cause a riot.
It's really detrimental to bring new fans to see boxing if they cant enjoy it as a normal night out as well. I know this from expereince with my friends that are casual fans.
I agree 100 percent mate - a ban on booze in the arena is a very blunt tool: it just means 90 percent of the punters spend all night in the bars, not watching the fights. You can drink in the arena during MMA shows, no problem, so why not boxing? I have experienced crowd violence in the arena before and since the ban and it hasnt made any diff to the level or intensity of the violence, IMO. It puts my mates off, no doubt. I can remember a trip not too long ago to the MEN arena with a bunch of casual fans and I am not sure if I saw more than 3 full rounds of boxing all night - we were flat out boozing in the bars and ducking into the hall intermittently.

No bad thing for me, rather watch a bill with 50% educated boxing fans that 90% casual fans shouting allsorts of abuse to the opposition fighter - as if its a football game!!

I am the same but I would rather be able to have a pint with my mates and enjoy the boxing as well.
Aslo its not just casual fans that shout abuse - last night I heard a professional fighter encouraging a boxer to "fornicate him up and leave him in hospital" - classy as a rat with a gold tooth in spats!

I think you'll find the useful advice actually went like this:
"STEVE! Get the fornicator off ya and batter him!" x100
I can only dream of giving help as tactically adept as that ;)

Nearly as helpful as
"Come on Matty show him what you're made of" x100
Maybe we should take the Tim Coleman appraoch to encouragement....

Why are they putting Oakey v Mcintosh on the Stoke bill makes no sense! Oakey would be better on the Small v webb bill in London.

First post so don't shoot me down folks!! I agree with the majority that the match ups were excellent and competative. The most annoying thing was the Georgian coaching team who were booming intructions out to their fighter and despite being told several times by officials to calm it, simply carried on. What is the offical ruling on this? The bloke wasn't even in the corner, just of the front row of VIP seats.

Must admit that was the first time I heard a Lionel Ritchie reference as encouragement to a boxer lol!

I think the guy was his father. As he was not part of the corner team then I down think there is anything that could have been done.
I will say that that young Georgian fella showed a lot of balls and fought his heart out to the very last.
Dean Parr told me that he was recently stopped by Don Broadhurst which shocked me a little cos he looked like a different fighter in there.

Yes, a little strange - can't Hatton promotions remeber how full the venues were when Oakey was defending his WBU title in Portsmouth.

It was full when he fought Francis. York Hall prizefighter had loads of his fans too. With Small not selling many tickets it makes sense.

Cheers pal. I am guessing he was also related to the kid who beat Steve Foster as he was back out there giving it his full lungs as I was leaving.

i think this ruling is rediculous, you can sit in a bar right next to the main hall and get as slugged up as you like, but you cant take a beer into the hall. how stupid. been to shows in america where drink is allowed even with thousands of hatton fans and always passes off no problem at all. also think there should be facilities provided to nip out for a fag too, am a non smoker now, but when going to see kahn barrera at the men had to go without one for nearly 5 hours, some people smoking in the toilets got evicted. york hall is good for this, just let you nip out and return no hassle. surely something that needs to be looked at on both counts.

The daft thing is you couldn't even take bottled water into the main hall!??
Georgians were a bit enthusiastic, but most were supporting their boy from the front row, not official seconds to the fighter.
I would think the crowd was OK as mentioned there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as people left in between fights. Actually wished they adopted the Wimbledon rule of only entering the seats when action has subsided, i.e at the end of a round.

Again this might not be the choice of the Hattons.

They do that in Vegas
