If someone can enlighten me on the history of Roach's career as a trainer that would be nice. Just because he trains a great fighter in Pac-Man, who is insanely naturally gifted, does not mean he could do a world of wonders more for Macklin than Gallagher could. How many boxers has Roach completely transformed stylistically? Im not denying he has, but I would like to hear some names. Khan has had three or four fights with Roach (I believe) and he would have won all of those fights anyways, given who he was facing, they were all made for him.
Roach is also training a slew of other world class fighters, and it has been a common occurrence for some of these boxers to receive limited attention under his guidance. Im not saying it was a bad move on Macklins part, but it seems everyone is flocking to Roach nowadays, and I'm not sure if its the positive, career changing move its made out to be.
Will probably have to pay more out of his purse as well.

Roach is currently training the #2 (imo) p4p fighter in the world, and certainarly knows his apples. good luck to matt!
how soon is too soon to be talking about world title shots?
to be honest macklin always looked an underachiever or simply disappointing until joe trained him. gallagher seemed to have brought big changes in his boxing. what a shame. joe had john murray and macklin winning domestic titles in great performances, and macklin winning the european titles - all in a short space. i think he has more champs than someone like, say, farnell, who gets talented fighters sent to him.

I dont think Farnell can be judged fairly for a few years yet.His most talented guys havent reached title level yet. Also,i dont think they are "sent to him" against their will.I would imagine they meet him,get on,maybe have a session before deciding to work together. All Farnell's lads on here speak very highly of him

is he alex arthur in disguise :!:
noticed macklin never gave joe any credit in either of his wins exept for the i am etc.being succesfull requires borderline arrogance which i feel macklin surpasses.
roach aint doing nothing he wasnt doing ten years ago,if anything he's winding down & is being poorly disabled due to his parkinsons.the man is now a millionaire & recieves great endorsements to his celebrity gym which is visited by the most famous from the sunset strip, i mean roach could coach christian bale & the like of mark wahlbergs for 4 weeks & earn more money,he's not intrested in coursing fighters like macklin who'll be on the sidelines not getting the attention to feed his ego.
it's a shame i feel macklin going to the wildcard there hundreds of decent camps he could choose & build himself up.the only time the kid gets some consistency & he gets itchy feet,i hope he suceeeds....

no disrespect meant to farnell. all i mean is, farnell gets good talents, and isn't judged for not having loads of champs - yet. farnell has a rep for being a good trainer, without having thousands of champs...joe gallagher has just brought his fighters toward titles - domestic and euro - in some pretty scintillating performances, and i felt it was funny that ppl were questioning him for not having loads of champs. (and also joe murray is a world ama medallist and olympian, joe being a gallagher fighter for a long time, not one he has just taken on.)
i believe joe was hoping to take murray and macklin to, or close to, world titles this year. i believe both ARE world rated, in the santioning bodies. i know that in the last few fights, murray has stopped in 3 or 4 fighters in the EBU top 10 rankings. so obviously a big setback with macklin jumping ship (yet again!). hopefully murray can beat mezaache and close in on the katsidis fight.
have to say crolla and joe murray look well capable of winning domestic titles in the near future.

you've set your stall out well & ive no doubt you'll be sucessfull, you'll probably get no props for it as your lads were am stars etc.

Odd choice this, esp. given that Roach has other commitments - who is going to work his corner in the UK at fight time? I remember Alex Arthur getting asked after a fight once about when Freddie will actually be in his corner and how does that affect him not having his trainer there.

Are we honestly contemplating / debating who the better trainer is here, Freddy Roach or Joe Gallagher ? Are these the same people who've said Khan was right to leave Harrison for the wild card?
Isn't this a bit Alex fergusson or Chris Hughton?

I don't have the exact statistics scrap, but I'd put Roach ahead of Gallagher due to the following
He has trained and worked with a mass of world clas (not british or european class) fighters over the past ten years. Hopkins, De La Hoya, Tyson, Toney, Klitchko, Steve Collins, Mculloch, Karmazin ... plus others (??)
He has taken Pacquiao from "a one handed fighter to lb4lb the best fighter on the planet" - granted they're roaches own words quoted, but he's not far wrong.
The transformaion in Amir Khan has been exceptional. Weakness has been identified, and rectified. his offensive skills have been polished. his route to the top has been crefully guided.
He has championship exeprience at world title level in X fights.
He has trained 25 world champions.
He has an exceptional team of full time trainers in the gym and around him.
The sparring partners in the gym, and coming through the gym are world class fighters, not likely lads form liverpool with "alright" records. How much would macklin develop sparring sturm (for example) day in day out?
He's a time served trainer that has accomplished more in the sport than most can ever dream. he lives eats and breathes boxing, 24/7. afetr all, its whats slowing his crippling illness.
Boxing writers trainer of the year 2003, 2006, 2008.
2008 World Boxing Council (WBC) “Lifetime Achievement Award
I've never been trianed by either (obviously). But I know which I'd say had the better credentials.
EDIT: can I just say I have nothing at all against joe gallagher and think he's doing fantastically well with Murray, and was with macklin... its all about levels though, isnt it?

Exactly!!
Freddie has PACMAN - but didn't he have Bobby Pacman and lots of other fighters that did not set the world on fire?
His association with Eddie Futch has of course elkevated him, but take away Pacman and who does he have that he built?
No doubt he is a good trainer, but he is not a miracle worker - could not help Tyson - DLH or Bobby Pac.
Good trainer but wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated in my opinion, as is PACMAN.
ROACH IS SIMILIAR TO EMMANUEL STEWARD - A GUN FOR HIRE.

Make a case for Joe Gallagher then... Roach may be overated, "wayyyyyy overated" but he'd still be ahead of Gallagher IMO. Like I say, no disrespect to joe, but c'mon.
And yeah fornicate sakes... i mean take away that pacman character .... who has been "built" into possibly the best fighter of our generation, and what has he done?

Georgie Benton or Emmanuel Steward? Who is the better trainer?
Most will say Steward because of his 'association' withh the STARS.
Most popular is not always the best.
Some people just read stats of Wikipedia and think 'WOW'!
What we do know is JG has brought stuff out of Macklin of late, does not mean he will get the same
success with Roach.
Take away Pac and what do you really have with Roach at the moment?
PLUS - Technically Pac is very flawed, taken him 7 years to get a right hand.
Amir Khan is doing very well under Roach, but lots of others have not.

Time will tell, although macklin is a grown up, and an intelligent lad, and I dont see ricky sending him there unless he feels its benefitial ...
Also to be fair its not as if roach himself will be required to watch Macklin for 6 hours a day, we're talking, what, an hour - 90 mins. And the problems will only occur if all of his "names" are fighting within two or three weeks of each other otherwise the training schedules will vary.
Craig Mcewan Macklin would be great to watch.

No its not, AA went there for boxing training and defence - he forgot to duck.
SOME PEOPLE TRAIN BETTER WITH UNKNOWN GUYS THAN THE TOP GUYS.
JT WAS WITH HIS OLD AMATEUR COACH and changed him for EMMANUEL STEWARD one he got tumped down.....He left Steward because STEWARD was not right for him.
Fightes make the trainers, imo - give me PBF for 2 months and he will still beat Hatton, does that make me a better trainer than Joe Gallagher?
NOPE!
Roach gets the best of the bunch based on Pac rise, imo.
PAC IS NOT THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF MY GENERATION.

With all due respect my opinion has nothing at all to do with reading Freddie Roaches wikipedia page, and then Joe Gallaghers.
Pacquiao is very flawed, and yet masterful technical fighters such as Cotto, De La Hoya and Barrera could not find those flaws. Marquez, who is possibly lb4lb the best technical fighter on the planet (if not then top 3) found them, granted, but marquez is an exception, and absolute masterful boxer. And anyway, some fighters will have flaws that will never be ironed out, otherwise a perfect fighter would have been created.
7 years to get a right hand is way off the pace, c’mon DG you know as well as I do that Pacquiao’s right hand was becoming very effective form the first barrera fight back in 2002/2003. Look at the punch that ended Julio’s night on the Lewis Tyson undercard.
Thing with Macklin is he’s always been a bit of a “sleeping giant”. He’s had the ability, but its never quite come together for one reason or another. Gallagher got that out of him, and he’s looked superb, but Roach is a whole new level in my opinion. You may have a different opinion, but I cant understand what its based on other than trying to pick apart Roaches career / achievements.
We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
Also, I said "possibly" the greatest fighter of our generation. Any discussion about THE greatest would have to involve the little philipino, surely?

Pac is flawed but stroing, very predictable in the past and predictable nowq.
Pacman is not the greatest or one of them, imo.
RJJ
PBF
Evander
Lennox
In the last 15 years are the standouts.
Pac is the 'exception' to the Roach camp. I hope that Macklin does well but time will tell.
Cotto - DLH and Barrera were past their best - especially DLH and MAB.
JMM was not and look what happened.
