Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Tough luck on Joe Gallagher as Macklin jumps ship, again.

I know it shouldnt but boxing chat calling Matt a somalian pirate makes me chuckle everytime i think of it.
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
huge loss for joe gallagher, macklin should of stayed with joe he's been producing his best form
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Another one jumps out of Joes ship
why move 2 good wins...........under Joe.
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Whilst i agree that constantly changing trainers to move sideways isnt a good move, I think mov9ing to be trained by Roach is a good move. With all due respect to joe galagher can someone tell me how many title fights his fighters have been in?
Roach is currently training the #2 (imo) p4p fighter in the world, and certainarly knows his apples. good luck to matt!
how soon is too soon to be talking about world title shots?

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
If Roach dedicates enough time to Macklin it would be fantastic. Roach is an awesome trainer. Having someone like Roach or Nazim Richardson think up your game plans is worth its weight in gold.

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
How is Roach gonna find the time to train him with Pacquiao-Clottey, Khan-Maidana and the likes of Guillermo Rigondeaux in action over the next month or two?

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Macklin is nothing if not fiercely ambitious: the move doesn't surprise me too much in all honesty.
A boxing career is short so I understand why he wants to train with the best and maximise his potentail.
I know a good few people who will be rolling their eyes though...

Ben,
just noticed on the article that you missed off Matt's brief association with Peter Harrison up in Scotland.
Cant remember if they had a fight together but he was up there for a stint early on in his career if I remember rightly..

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
i'm really not sure about this move as, as others have suggetsed, I am not sure that Mathhew will be able to receive the fullest of Roach's attentions.
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Agree with most of the posts, fair play to Macklin for looking to be trained by (arguably) the best, but is Roach spreading himself too thinly for him to get much time? Who is helping Roach out since he got rid of MM?

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
I feel for Gallagher, Macklin has been on brilliant form with him but now he leaves him. Still you cant go wrong by moving to Roach he's the best at the moment by far
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Cheers for that Dan, I can't remember either but I'd completely forgotten that Macklin has been linked with Peter Harrison before. Macklin's trying to rival Alex Arthur for the most number of trainers a fighter can have in their career.TerribleTerry wrote:Ben,

I do rate Macklin but I can't understand his decision to ditch Gallagher given the explosive form he's produced under Gallagher against Elock and Asikanen - on paper, two 50-50 ish fights. He never looked comfortable with Buddy McGuirt or Richie Woodhall, but things seemed to have clicked under Gallagher.
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Blimey not again, good luck to the lad but he has more trainers than Reebok.
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
all i can say on this is thats thanks for you

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Roach now has Macklin, Dean Byrne and Jamie Kavanagh in the stable - which has all the hallmarks of a cracking Irish card for the west coast
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Macklin has trained at Freddie Roach's gym before, in the early half of this decade, but Joe Gallagher took him to British and European titles.
Roach took him to a loss to Andrew Facey.

He might be the best at the moment, but he has had failures and is it worth leaving Gallagher (who he has just won two titles with) for someone that won't spend all that much time with him?BARNEYKX wrote:all i can say on this is thats thanks for you

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
Thats not really accurate though is it Bennie? He may well have trained in the wild card around that period but I am pretty sure he was still trained by the Lynch bros?bennie wrote:Macklin has trained at Freddie Roach's gym before, in the early half of this decade, but Joe Gallagher took him to British and European titles.

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
He only trained for about 3 weeks at the Wild Card. I don't think Freddie was ever his trainer.TerribleTerry wrote:Thats not really accurate though is it Bennie? I think he left the Lynches after the Facey defeat to go to Billy Graham. He had left the Lynches before to go to Peter Harrison, but left after one fight.

loyalty is rare in boxing
Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
How many boxers does Roach have under his wing now then? isn`t Sturm with him also now?
I realise he may give lots of his time to Manny Pacman .. but do the others get so much one2one with him??

Re: Macklin leaves Gallagher for Freddie Roach
I know Roach is pretty much the best in the business, but I cant see this being a good move for Macklin.
Joe Gallagher has done a cracking job with Macklin and Macklin simply isnt going to get the attention and focus he needs from Roach, who is already committed to some big names at the Wild Card.
To be honest im a little disappointed with Mackin on this one. Gallagher and Macklin were good for each other. I wonder who has been whispering in Macklin's ear this time...

Seems a strange decision, I though his performances had improved since he joined Joe.
