Roland is there to present the fights and ask the "experts" the questions afterwards. He does this very well. He isn't required to give his opinions. He isn't a commentator. What's the problem?

Duke McKenzie loves the game and whilst he gets his words mixed up, I like him, he gets very excited, a bit like Marv Albert on the old NBC shows in the 1980's.

The BBC should make a pitch for Steve Holdsworth, him and Duke would be good.

Why is Claude Abrams not involved anymore at the BBC. I thought he came across very well?
Steve Holdsworth has been on the Beeb once and his sucking up to Inverdale "Yes John, No John, you're right John" did my tits in. It was a far cry from his "tell it as it is" Eurosport commentating.
thats why holdsworth hasnt been seen on the bbc since that, he told me never again,

Set a date Mr lightsoot and I'll be there. It's an absolute travesty! Forget Ali & Parkinson, they could've made a killing with an Audley & Richardson "The Interviews" video.

Look at least the BBC do hire people who tell it as it is. Sky won't have anyone on who doesn't suck their fighters dicks. The last time someone like Nigel Benn was on (away from the Bruno thing) he said things that ruined sky's false image of their fighters i.e Tony Oakey and they hardly ever have him on. Do you think they could ever have Naz on there? After the way he went on with them, they'd never dare have him on for fear of being cussed on national TV.

Until the Jones/Tarver broadcast I thought John Rawling was an excellent commentator, but then he says something stupid at one point, can't remember what, that totally erases the opinion.

Is it me, or does the BBC have appalling commentators for ALL its sports? That appalling duo who do the athletics and get EVERYTHING wrong, ala jim neilly. also the idiotic peter alliss for golf, barry davies, Clive Everton for the frickin snooker. bloody david mercer for wimbledon.

even when sky send Ian darke off to an obscure football match to make up the commnetary numbers for champions league night, he manages to get through without making a total idiot of himself. boxing is his sport, therefore when he does the football he makes no attempt at punditry and keeps it simple.

Just some info for Riddick before you slag somebody off maybe you should get your facts correct. It was Gary Logan who did the interview with David Haye in Miami and not Ronald!!!

I seem to go against the consenus here but I think the BBC are a sporting institution and generally have superb presentation in all areas.

Rawlings is a good commentator, so he made one mistake, give the guy a break. If all your years of good work were wiped out when you made a solitary mistake I think we would all be out of work! The quality football commentators they have are endless, Motty, Green, Pearce and co do a superb job on Radio 5 live.

They always did a better job of covering the Premiership that ITV did who have managed to cheapen it somehow as they always do.

The athletics is great, Wimbledon is great, I really like the BBC!

Ok so the commentary is pretty awful (COME BACK HARRY!!) and Inverdale looks a bit like Dracula... but lets credit the BBC with actually bringing boxing back to terrestrial tv and providing some much needed competition for sky. And theyve shown some pretty good fights too.... Gatti, Mayaorga, Barrera, ....Channel 5 is doing a decent job too with it's US shows...... but again, ...dire commentary.
Without doubt the best boxing commentators around today are Sky's Ian Darke and Glenn Mccory.

Peter Alisss is a fantastic commentator, kind of like Sport's Answer to Terry Wogan.

A lot of the old guard have passed from our screens now, and a lot of the new guys simply don't have the background knowledge of guys like Reg and Harry, but in time they will all improve.

What about Paul Dempsey, Mr Charisma himself, who was overhead having a conversation by a mate of mine saying 'I don't really following boxing, and I don't care too, football's my sport.'

Inverdale is at least a proper journalist, he's no expert on boxing, but he's articulate and probing.

Steve Holdsworth is very good too, perhaps more of an aquired taste than Ian Darke, but he's a knowledgable and often entertaining commentator who really cares about boxing and boxers....... shame he can't switch to the BBC!!!.

seriously mate next time you watch the athletics, tell me the commentary isn't appalling. wimbledon is only revived by John McEnroe. John Lloyd is possibly the most boring pundit ever, Sue Barker has a permanent, annoying smile attached to her chortling face, Barry Davies covers everything so has no expertise in anything.

As for Rawling, i can't remember the mistake but it was a fatal one, and not just a passable slip up. (not great evidence, i know, but he did make a mistake, a bad, umm... bad... mistake). duke is too much like a screaming toddler and he makes as many cock ups as Jim Neilly and Garry Richardson combined. Mike Costello is ok- but he still doesn't know anything about the sport.

Motson is the only good football commentator they have. the other fools are members of the inept circus. apart from lineker and hansen who are obviously excellent.

the entire golf crew are unbearable.

sorry, BBC commentary is still pretty much awful.

I think Riddick should look in the mirror before he slags everyone off. To say Ronald and Mike Costello know nothing about boxing is insulting, have you ever spoken to them?

Remember you are the knowledge box who got Ronald (BBC Presenter) mixed up with Gary Logan...

Also do you ever watch boxing on Sky...try having a go at Barry McGuigan who after watching a dubious Anthony Farnell victory last year came out with the immortal line of 'he is the only middleweight in the country'

Has Bazzer ever heard of Howard Eastman who wouldn't even employ Farnell as a sparring partner...maybe that's good journalism in your eyes!

I think you've got pretty high standards.

I suppose people have different tastes with commentary like they do with music, I happen to prefer Rawling and Duke McKenzie to Darke and Mcrory to be honest with you, who I think are awful.

One thing you have to bear in mind as well is that the Sky broadcast is basically presenting to a more specialised boxing audience, the BBC have a far far wider audience and I assume are trying to encourage interest in the sport so they can't start prattling on about the proliferation of the WBA title or get too technical.

As a hardcore boxing fan the whole Sky thing is going to be up your street, you're never ever going to get that on the BBC (unless it's on Radio 5 live who have some superb boxing documentaries in the past) because they have less time and a less knowledgable audience.

I think there is also what you are used to, I grew up watching and listening to boxing on the BBC and although it's different to then there is still something familiar about it, just as people a little younger than me (I'm only 30!) who maybe only really know their boxing from Sky feel at home with Darke and Mcrory.

Leave Duke alone.

He's a great guy and a very colourful commentator.

I will always remember the Lewis - Klitschko fight on 5Live, Duke screamed "Jesus, they've gotta stop this fight, Klitschko's eye is hanging out".

Great Stuff.

Kind of reminded me of the time John Mugabi fought Gary Guiden back in 83 and Marv Albert of NBC said (after Mugabi nailed Guiden, who was still on his feet, with a right hand) "Gary Guiden is standing up completely knocked out"

Duke is certainly, shall we say, enthusiastic. I can remember when he was co-commentating on his brother Clinton McKenzie's win over Chris Blake in the 80's with Harry Carpenter. He was hardly an unbiased party, but did his best to remain neutral as Clinton pasted Blake all over the ring.
Finally, Duke showed his hand: "You know, Harry," he said, "I almost feel sorry for Chris Blake!"

Incidentally, Ken Jones wrote an article in The Independent a couple of days ago about Duke and John Rawling's commentary.

I think Tarver beating Jones would have been one of the biggest upsets of all time.

Bigger than Turpin - Robinson

Upsets

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Tyson v Douglas has to be the biggest upset ever, weren't odds something ridiculous like 70-1.

I was so disgusted (as a 17 year old too!), that i boycotted the fight and refused to watch it, and told all my friends how the fight was a debacle

Tyson was considered by most utterly invincible at that point, and Douglas was regarded as a glorified club fighter.

Ali v Liston and Ali v Foreman were nip and tuck by comparison.

Not compared to Honeyghan/Curry I think - which was almost comparable to Douglas/Tyson in terms of odds.

No-one gave Lloyd a chance to beat Curry, seen as P4P # 1 or 2 and unbeatable at welterweight.

Rahman was seen to have at least a (slim) punchers chance, as we'd already seen Lennox go over at the hands of McCall. Plus all those rumours of Lennox not training, hanging out with Julia Roberts, then turning up only a few days before the fight...

As for Duke McKenzie - nice guy but his voice is just too squeeky to be anything other than annoying on TV - plus he wets himself at the drop of a hat - just when you think his voice can't get any higher, it does...

He should take voice coaching from Big Frank, and get a nice deep booming bass going.

Know wot I mean Arry?
